You’re absolutely right. I think the massive increase in human life expectancy is attributed to the removal of waste from where we live and access to clean drinking water. Advancements in medicine, though extremely important, seem to get all the credit. Hold your head high, young man. Your work is invaluable.
Yep.. I did it over 20 years ago already, and it all depends on your driver and route. This residential area route doesn’t seem to bad, and the driver waits for the bagger to get back on. When I did it the drivers were assholes because they got incentive based pay.. faster you do your route, the more they get paid, so your running to keep up with the truck because some of them would just leave you if you weren’t fast enough and call dispatch to bring out someone else. Your knees and ankles/feet take a beating jumping on and off the truck 1k+ times a day.
We took a whole tree once while on garden waste. Chopped through a full 15 inch trunk multiple times as we loaded it in. On another round we took a garage door. Had to bite corners off it until it fitted in. Those were the days.
Man, sanitation is such a vital part of allowing society to function and thrive. Can you imagine the disease and issues we would have without it? I really appreciate what you do
I work in this industry I know we don't get appreciation from many people but the ones who do it makes our day and our work little more better. Being a slinger is fun at times but it can get messy.
I don't own a home yet or in a neighborhood but what can I do to make your job a little better? I have massive respect for you guys after watching this videos and reading all the comments
When I was a kid my favorite day of the week was garbage day. I'd follow along behind the truck, watching all the good stuff getting thrown in and crunched up. A neighbor had a TV repair shop, and would frequently have upwards of a dozen unremarkable TVs out for the trash. This was back when many sets had wooden cabinets. It was particularly pleasurable to watch and hear them get crunched. When I was a little older I started hanging out in his shop, and occasionally scored a particularly nice old wood cabinet TV, the kind with doors that closed in front. I'd take them home, take out the guts, and make them into various other cabinets, like book cabinets. When I moved here in 2001 the city still had manual trash pickup with guys following behind the truck like in this video. What I found interesting here was that the guys were pretty young - and white. As a kid in the big city the guys seemed so much older, and almost exclusively black. All of them, black or white, were always cheerful and friendly to me. I got a talking to by a supervisor here back in 03 when I gave the guys a case of beer for a Christmas gift lol, he said I should just give gift cards [I used to produce quite a bit of bulky, strange trash down here as a result of my hobbies.]
I noticed how he sets down the trash cans after emptying them. Where i am they toss em half hazard when there done, they do the same to the recycling bins. Total Lac of respect.
@@flawdaman305 where i am. It's the helpers in the back that slam the cans down tre for times with the hidrolics , then they leave & the same to others, people did complain to the city who called W.M they did nothing, until i sent them the Bill's for the busted bin's they called & apologized they oaid for the bin's, the employee was fired for his stupidity. Now they send us the side lift & the driver is careful not to break things. Only once they broke my bin accedentely & left me a note stating that they are willing to replace it. So i didn't make a fuss & spoke with the driver two weeks later, he apologized for the mistake, the bin slipped out of the claw & smashed to the ground. I appreciated the fact that he let me know of the incident, so i told his boss , keep him he dose a good job & is very mindful, i was told the man has been doing this for 20 year's & has always been mindful. I like people that know how to work & be mindful. I told his boss we need more people like him, he agreed.
Man I used to be be a driver for a residential garbage collection company and at first I thought it was not much but damn I found out its fun. Specially when I got to help other drivers and I would be outside with the 2 helpers picking up the cans. They should let the helper wear snearkers.
A great uncle owned two garbage trucks. Collected garbage from elder age homes and apartment buildings etc. He also had a landscaping buiness. He died with over a million dollars (and thats in the late 70s) . He couldn't spend all of the money he had and hid it everywhere on his properties. One pile of money was neatly rolled into tobacco cans that blocked up a pantry.
Damn you're killing it!! Much respect. My trash guys could learn a lot from you. We can't throw out furniture here only household trash in bags or barrels and there is a limit of each, we pay yearly for trash pickup.
I did this for my grandpas local garbage business when I was 16! Looks like the same kinda smasher I used too. It’s nice that it has an auto lever to run the whole cycle without having to hold it in. Good workout, sucked when bags were filled with heavy shite or if they broke. Gotta watch for juicy explosions when crushing too. Landfills smell like hot cheese!
I like the extra rebar handle they added on, definitely helps. Interesting they never ran the PTO while driving on our truck, I wonder if that was a rule or crap truck.
Never thought I’d be watching a video of a guy manning a garbage truck, but man, you are skilled and efficient. Great idea with the videos, and props to your hard work and hustle. 👍🏻
This job seems so relaxing. Worst part would be the smell but you’d get used to it. We don’t have trucks like this here. No body rides on the back and manually loads trash.
Que país mais subdesenvolvido a esse que você vive aqui no Brasil são duas pessoas que recolhe o lixo e ainda assim é com má vontade Deve ser porque o salário é muito baixo
Wow, you're really fast. Do you make more money by going hard or just get finished earlier? Edited to say: I watch a construction youtuber who is always complaining that his guys aren't hustling, but they get paid by the hour. If they bust their ass and finish early they make less money!
I didn't even realize that many old-school garbage trucks like this were still around. Everything in my area is all village and city supplied 85 gallon bins with garbage trucks that have automated robotic arms that lift the trash so the driver never has to do any work. And each truck in my area is single person operated.
Hands down, the most under appreciated job in America.
Idk you just throw bags in the truck
