It’s time for a petrol v diesel v electric drag race!
Mat’s lining up in an all-new Tesla Model Y, and he’s going head-to-head with a Porsche Macan GTS and a BMW X3 M40d!
But which will come out on top? Well for starters, let’s check out the stats. The Tesla Model Y is equipped with two electric motors which combine to produce 434hp & 494Nm of torque. As with most electric cars, it’s pretty heavy, weighing in at 1,979kg. However, it’s also the cheapest car here, with prices starting from £55,000.
Alongside is the petrol competitor, the Macan GTS. It’s housing a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 under the bonnet, which can produce 440hp & 550Nm. It’s about 40kg lighter than the Model Y, but it’s the most expensive car here, costing around £66,000!
Finally, we have the X3. Powered by a 3-litre turbo diesel engine, it can only put down 340hp, but it’s way up on torque at 700Nm! However, it’s also the heaviest car here, weighing in at 2,005kg.
So how will this play out - will it be an easy win for the Macan? Or could the X3 spring a surprise? There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!

Carwow has set a standard for these kind of drag races/comparison, very nsync , accurate and fun to watch. I’ve watched other videos like this too but Carwow is always my #1 place to go.
I love how the front wheels of the Porsche almost came off the ground during that launch.
Most surprised by that X3 M40d... wasn't expecting that at all at launch.

probably the better competitor would have been the X5 m50d with the quad turbo I6, makes 400hp and you can get 500 with a tune... but stock for stock it would have probably been a bit more in line with the others power wise... X5 of course being in another bracket but... they don't make a X3 m50d, even though they should... I love me a good strong diesel...

I was surprised by the weight of these cars. Always thought electrics were heavier in general. These seem to be in the somewhat same size classes.

I think the BMW should have been raced against 4x4s with a similar BHP as it was heavier and running with 100bhp less. I have a feeling it would perform a lot better.
I think the whole point of the race was to have an EV race a petrol car and a Diesel car (all within the same class)... the point wasnt to find an even match for the bmw.
huge torque advantage though which makes it interesting.
As James says, 27% and 42% more torque over the other 2, so not a valid excuse.

@@blazesmooth5573 the torque to start is provided by the starter motor surely. Then the torque measured at the crank is after all such losses. The huge torque from diesels is why they have such excellent towing capability and the roll on acceleration without changing gear etc. I do think the BMW here has a significant torque advantage which it can't translate to acceleration perhaps due to gearing, additional slow gear changes because of limited revs etc.

The X3 M40d was one of my favourite cars we have had. 340bhp and 43mpg. That torque and the handling is fantastic. Great gearbox too. Miss it greatly. Diesel should not be dead
Matt previously tested the X4 M40d at 12.8 for the 1/4 mile so there is something wrong with that X3.

Model X Plaid would smack them but the P100d would be interesting. Cayenne Turbo GTS is insanely quick. They actually have a vid of the cayenne vs model x vs a bunch of other SUVs
Maybe put a trailer on the x plaid to make it closer.
The model X plaid runs 9.7 so a totally different planet of speed, will be fun to see Matt running it when it makes it to the UK.

Got my Model Y Long Range with the acceleration boost exactly one year ago and absolutely love it 28,000 miles later! Even better since I didn’t have to deal with the ridiculous $10,500 price increase since I bought it!

@@TheVipter Yes. It's listed in the "Upgrades" section of the app and always tempting you. It doesn't normally take 20 minutes like in this video either. Took less than a minute for me.

I was able to ring an 11.9 out of our Y Performance at the strip. Crazy that it's nearly a second quicker.
The one in the video is a long range, not a performance model.

Usually a standard LR will hit 12.8 and the boost knocks it down to 12.3 or so. I'm not sure what might have slowed theirs down so much here.
I think you should do the stop test also 3 times.. to check the brake power over longer time.

I have a model Y performance which is about a second faster (11.8) and still cheaper than the Macan. Great race! Didn’t think the slow model Y had a chance there but it did good!

yes, basically CHEAPER.... Crap quality, crap leather? is this leather? the seat design/ cushion/ shape is like a sofa, handling snd steering feedback? You are comparing a great driver's SUV versus a fast oven with wheels. Disclaimer: I will get one for daily commute but you cannot compare the others 2 with the Tesla, btw for the price and to move from point A to B...yes I know super fast..is a good option in a city (not for travel)

They are great seats though. 99% of people that say they are crap quality have never owned one, the quality is good, the car is great. Electric power train is so much better than gas, more responsive, smoother, just better.

@@mastodon5220 They are once you get past all the QC issues that should have been taken care of in the factory. Rainwater getting in the cabin/trunk because of gaps, stuff not bolted on properly, all expensive issues I’ve experienced with Model Y

Great race! The Macan is FAST. Also, keep in mind that the Model Y they used wasn't the fastest of Tesla's lineup. That's a Model Y long range, look at the wheels. The long range is the only model that comes with the acceleration boost option. The performance is faster from the factory. Acceleration boost lowers the 0-60 for the LR from 4.8 to 4.2 seconds. The performance model goes 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.

You guys forgot to press the Sport Chrono button of the Macan GTS (if it has it). This way the GTS will have more power for about 30 seconds. This is exactly the amount needed to beat the Model Y 🙃
