    You guys always have great episodes this is becoming my best show on baseball/sports cards & the hobbby. I think Ohtani is and will always be great for the sport. His only comparable "double threat" is Ruth and thats saying something (no other player in 80+ years). His bat and pitching are legit & pretty much at equal levels (no doubt he could big the biggest bat on any team as well as the ace). I believe like all other players with age when production does go down in the long term he already made his mark on baseball (but we all want to see him keep it up). I believe his work ethic and drive will propel him forward just hope the body holds up. Really wished I jumped on certain cards earlier but it was hard to tell like you mentioned in years 19/20 by then it was 3 years into the show already.
    On a side note I feel the same way about the media and their true colors showing, (all of them want to be the first to run the latest story first etc - loss some respect for ex. of Ken Rosenthal as much as I appreciate his journalism) Ohtani doesn't have to say a word besides it kept all media on an equal playing field and goes to show none of them were right, although at other times they do have the latest word just not this time. Basically Ohtani did no favors for any of them and it showed they were mad and unfairly said some untrue things like he has an obligation etc to helping his career (more like their careers). As far as contracts go lately I've been trying to look at it differently. If teams actually paid for what certain players are worth early in their career especially stars.... and stars on the Hall Of Fame path then it doesn't look bad but it doesn't work that way. Can you really blame the player when production goes down when we all know its inevitable to happen but early in their careers teams got away with minimum to covering arbitration years and had more leverage. Thats the way the system works. Anyway good show👍

      Yeah it would make more sense to lock players up at young ages with front loaded deals that pay them less moment as they pass their prime.
      Tough to change the whole system though, and that would put so much risk into those deals!
      As much as I hate seeing Ohtani come to. National league, I know I’m going to watch a lot of his games because he’s just that exciting.

    Great episode. I like Ohtani’s cards long term. There are shorter-term risks that you covered, particularly how 2024 goes after the surgery. Very true that rare cards start to appear around these times. Can be challenging weighing opportunity to pick up the card you’ve been looking for with likely having to pay more for it.
    Looking forward to the next installment. Would like to hear everyone’s thoughts on SPs, SSPs, and numbered parallels. Would be helpful to briefly define what they are and compare the desirability of all three from a collecting and an investing standpoint.

    Can anyone live up to the hype of $700 million dollars...only time will tell, but he still has huge numbers to catch he is still not a HOF'er....even if the modern card market demands HOF+ numbers on the prices of his cards, they are all insane, but reality will catch up.

    • @SpitballinCards
      @SpitballinCards  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely needs more years to make to the HOF, but I don’t think he needs the usual numbers to get there - especially he successfully gets back on the mound in LA.

I will be rooting for "anyone but the Dodgers", but I get your point that Betts/Freeman/Ohtani are all likeable talents in their own right. The Dodgers are just the evil empire of this era.

    Ohtani's cards have jumped up big time. His 2018 Topps Series 2 and Topps Chrome PSA 10's have almost doubled since his signing with LA. Went to a 150 Table Card Show this weekend, and only saw 1 2018 Topps Chrome PSA 10 and a few 2018 Topps PSA 9s for sale. Dealers are holding onto Ohtani, and the few i saw were way overpriced.

    • @SpitballinCards

      That was my experience at the Burbank show back over Labor Day - at least the overpriced part. Plenty of base rookies everywhere back then.

    1. Volpe

    The problem with Will Smith potentially breaking an RBI record is that he will have fewer chances to DH. He's probably going to get under 500 ABs as a catcher. I actually question his long term status on the dodgers. Their offense is stacked so they might want a defensive first catcher in the future. It can't be understated how important Smith has been to the dodgers since 2019 though. When he came back to the lineup after his concussion scare they were winning more games. He's a free agent in 2026 so he has some time. Plus Cartaya is still young and had a below average year in AA. I think Smith is probably safe until at least 2026. After that I don't know. Barnes probably won't get much playing time especially if Kershaw doesn't return.

    • @SpitballinCards
      @SpitballinCards  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is true - the dh slot has been filled.
      For the dodgers’ sake, hopefully Smith will work on his pop time this off season.
      But you have to think a lot of RHP will just point Ohtani to 1b and go after smith.

    The Dodgers didn't cause this problem. The NewYork teams and San Diego went all out to outbid everyone. Some owners don't even try but have money. This is a unique experience for Dodgers. Plus Boris has cause the high.cost. I would think if you can't compete get out.

      It’s so rare that a top player hits free agency at 26! He’s going to get a ton of cash and unlike most free agents, Soto’s new team will get his prime years.
      I get that he offers limited defensive value, but the offensive value is crazy high.
      We’ll see what he gets!

    the second surgery that he had done is not the traditional tommy john. It is a new hybrid version that allows for faster healing and it to heal stronger. This could be called the Shohei Ohtani surgery going forward. There are reports that potentially he could be ready to throw/pitch by Sept. Hold onto those Ohtani cards. I predict 3 WS wins, 2 MVPs at least in the 10 year span. I'm hoping he gets 8 rings and breaks Tom Brady's record. Imagine the value of his cards if that happens. 8 rings in a 10 year span.
