The Who was the first band to use lasers. This was filmed at Shepperton Studios. At the same time as this clip Alien was being filmed basically in the next studio. They borrowed the lasers for the scene of the "egg alien" room from The Who. Next time you watch Alien you'll see it.

This song contains the, without question or argument, greatest scream in rock and roll history. Everyone else merely competes for 2nd.

The Who were smashing instruments in the 1960s. They played at Monterey Pop in 67 and Woodstock in 69.

It's a "revolutionary" song written by Pete Townshend in 1970 and released on the 1971 album "Who's Next". This album is excellent from start to finish. Just like Tommy from 1969, Live at Leeds from 1970 and Quadrophenia from 1973. The Who have been using lasers on stage since 1975.

The song was originally released in ‘71, this performance is from ‘78, I believe. The reason the video quality is so good, it’s being filmed for the movie “The Kids Are Alright”.

Pete Townshend's the one who started smashing guitars. No one would probably do it if he hadn't started.

The Who started smashing their gear as early as 1964. It started as an accident but their management wanted them to keep doing it as part of their act. It kept them close to bankruptcy for years until their album Tommy pretty much saved their career in 1969, and elevated them to superstardom. After that, they would only smash their gear occasionally.

The synth part (an electronic organ running through a synth) is on tape. Moon is wearing a headset so he can remain in sync to it.

And he was such an animal behind the drums that they had to tape the headphones on his head because they kept falling off!

The drummer, Keith Moon, was the inspiration for the Muppets character Animal.

They are in their 30s here and Moon is well past his best. Suggest you look at Tanglewood or Isle of Wight to see them at or around their live peak 69/70.

The WHO were the first punk rock band. Incredible musicianship, but still punk in their performance. Changed rock and roll, like it should be. Angry, don’t trust the establishment whoever they may be.

That era had Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and other 'heavy' bands. The Who were known to be the loudest live act of them all.

The funny thing is that is one of the few times the guitar didn't break! MANY other guitars weren't so lucky.

THE MOVE destroyed their instruments in the mid-sixties, but THE WHO took it to the extreme. Yes, these were GREAT musicians. They trained, they played live so much until they were polished. Unfortunately, we have lost that today. You needed talent because so much was live, and even in the studio you couldn't auto-tune, adjust sounds to keep rhythm, etc. The computers have taken over, and creativity has been one of the main casualties.

They were probably in their mid-30s at this point. I saw them in 1982 on their "Farewell!" tour as an 18 year old. I saw them again in 1996. Won't get fooled by the "Farewell!" tour BS again! 😂😂😂
Seriously, though, these dudes killed. And the lyrics to this tune are pretty deep, man. The synth is definitely on a loop in the background. They do that with another tune, "Baba O'Riley," that is an all-time anthem.

Funny line about the angry boomers. Why? A line from an old show in the 70's. OLD MAN: "Son. Never grow old". ARCHIE BUNKER: "What the hell does that mean?" OLD MAN: "You'll find out".

The pickups aside from the center are Gibson’s Deluxe Humbuckers - a little narrower than “Standard” with a bit brighter tone.

The original punks. And we are angry because the fun police have taken over. Think about it. If you grew up in an era where you had actual freedom and then were transported into the politically correct cancel culture - you'd be pissed as well :)

The Sex Pistols were banned in the 70s. Radio wouldn't play Working Class Hero by Lennon because of swear words. Roger Waters wrote a song against Mary Whitehouse and her cancel culture in 1975. In the 80s in the US there were congressional hearings against Zappa and Twisted Sister, parental advisory stickers... The Life of Brian was banned in several countries. In the nineties during the Gulf war, they banned The Cure and Massive Attack songs. You're just nostalgic. There have always been people trying to cancel things.
