THIS is what hard rock was about, and THIS is what rock stars looked like. I miss those days, when rock and roll was king and the guitar reigned. And perhaps some of the best lyrics in all of rock/pop music: MEET THE NEW BOSS, SAME AS THE OLD BOSS!

The best part? It cost $7.00 to see The Who at Boston Garden in 1976. By 1982, the price skyrocketed to $12.25 to see The Who and The Clash on the same bill at Shea Stadium in NYC. I might be old, but I got to see all the cool bands live!

I would recommend anything from the Who performing at the Isle of Wight 1970. Not only because it's a great performance, but you get to see drummer Keith Moon in his prime. This video is fun, but Keith was a shell of himself by this point, and he would pass away soon after. Another great video would be their performance of "A Quick One" at the Rolling Stones Rock n Roll Circus. The Stones were so sure the Who had upstaged them on their own show that it took 30 years for the film to finally be released.

A little bit about the Who for you to keep an eye on as you watch more of their songs. The drummer Keith Moon (Moon the Loon) was widely seen as one of the top rock drummers of all time, alongside John Bohnam from Led Zeppelin, and Cozy Powell, from Rainbow, Deep Purple, Dio etc. Unfortunately he took the whole rock star persona to a whole new level, destroying everything on tour. He drove his Rolls Royce into a swimming pool. He tricked his kit to explode at the end of a live TV performance, but didn't tell the others. It deafened Pete Townsend to this day. The bass player John Entwistle (Thunderthumbs) is INCREDIBLE. The pair of them play their instruments to within an inch of their lives. That leaves Rodger Daltry on vocals, and Pete Townsend on guitar.
This performance is a bit special. Keith Moon passed away in 1978, and Pete Townsend's regular guitar is a Fender Telecaster. This performance with this tune is a rather unusual triple humbucker Gibson Les Paul. It's a fuller body sound than the Tele. They destroy their instruments are the end because the audience expects them to do it. It's an expected part of the performance, and it all happened by accident. One night, Keith Moon accidentally kicked his kit over, going a bit wild, and the audience thought it was part of the act. He loved the attention, and destroyed it. At one time, they held the Guinness World Record for the loudest ever live performance.
The Who have a couple of movies; Quadrophenia, where they do most of the OST as a double album. It's a gang movie about Mods and Rockers meeting at Brighton Beach in England to fight. There's also a Rock Opera movie / play called Tommy.

Unfortunately it appears from the Wings of Pegasus channel that many of the new singers and quite a few older ones are abusing autotuning and pitch correction to death, and that the computer processing is fast enough to do it in real time so they are singing "live" but what you hear coming out of the speakers is not what went into the microphone.

John was the best musician in the group as much as Keith is praised to be the best drummer ever (and he was one of the best) but John Entwistle was the only one that could really rival a John Paul Jones. You should listen to The Real Me - I think it‘s the best rock bass playing ever even beating Ramble On, and that bass riff is iconic as hell. But what John is doing on The Real Me is out of this world!
Lyrically a song for the Americans now, that just never will learn… sorry.
