Comparing the old & new LEGO Technic 42129 Mercedes-Benz Zetros + rear axle crack test reloaded

  • The LEGO Technic 42129 4x4 Mercedes-Benz Zetros Trial Truck was released last year, and in December an updated manual popped up online with some changes in the build and the new Technic hub with screws. That version cannot be bought ever since, but I decided to build it and compare it to the original to see what changed.

    I really appreciate your frank and honest reviews. Some channels are simply "fanbois" and it seems like their goal is to make Lego like then enough to keep sending them future sets. I think your criticisms are constructive and fair which is why I keep coming back to watch your content!

    I purchased the old version and used the digital instruction. I made a list of the missing parts using ones from my inventory. I then called customer service. After a little checking they told me that, yes there was an update and they would send me the new parts and a copy of the new manual. They mentioned that the Australia site had the latest instructions. Not sure if that's still true. I was very happy with the customer service on the issue.

    You are right about "no communication about the changes" and "no indication of different versions" and it's really bad. When I chose it in the online store, I saw different 42129 sets with slightly different prices, but I thought that these were just different suppliers, I did not think to compare the number of parts. Already after I bought it I found out about the problems with the doors and the rear axle and from the very beginning I used the simple but very effective recommendations of Egor from RM8 BrickGarage and there were no problems with the crunch. Much later I heard about the existence of a new version and now when I watched your video I was glad that I had the old one because my bluetooth hub without screws)) thanks for your video!

    Interesting comparison, and Lego reveal. I find it funny how most of the changes only stabilize the doors/hood while not really improving the overall performance, and actually allowing the vehicle to fall apart rather than risk any serious part breakage. Doesn't surprise me Lego would update a set and not say a word about it. I imagine the changes were made fairly recent from the initial releases based on review feedback as not to effect many buyers. Though in all fairness Lego should have seen a lot of these first release issues during there extensive structural integrity tests. Love the tease for the Airbus Helicopter. Really looking forward to your thoughts opinions on that one.

    Hi from Sydney, AU. Very good report on the update, I had a quick look online at the instructions, on step 95 it shows the new build. On the main first page it states “Coming Soon” which is odd as these have been available for some time. I am sure the several boxes in the local Lego shop will be old stock, I guess. Thanks for the info. Cheers.

  • @McKrushi

    IIRC every set that pushes something like the drivetrain to its limit has a clutch gear somewhere, mainly because the weight of the model+tracks on carpet = full traction and possibly damaged parts. I do not remember any motorized and wheel-based model with a clutch. So maybe they think, that losing grip on the wheels is usually enough protection.
    But nevertheless: The rear axle is not a masterpiece, but atleast after you add a second transmission to the other side of the diff it's sturdy enough I think - even if it might still come apart if you grab the wheels.

    Purchased this set back in November 2022 and yes got old version as battery pack didn't have any screws and the digital instructions were different that I thought I was missing pieces compared to paper version.
    Little upset with Lego not advertising this fact directly but they were willing to send me the extra parts, but as in middle of the build thought find out what other changes they have made.

    I just purchased this set and am working on the build. Confused the heck out of me as I was following the PDF instructions in the Lego Builder app, while the paper instructions included in the set reflect what I actually have. The PDF has minor differences, but they are hard to spot if you are not expecting them. At least I know now that I am not losing my mind!

    Hi Balazs!
    I just got the Zetros from the official Lisbon Lego store (in the Colombo Mall).
    I took care to ask the seller, - are these the most recent boxes you have? He replied, - the Zetros doesn't get sold a lot, so the oldest box should be from late 2022. He showed me 5 boxes, all exactly the same on the outside.
    As I got home, I compared both my hub and the manual pages, with the ones you pointed out in the video, and found I had the original version.

Lego, as always, was kind enough that - after showing them the invoice - they will send me the required 29 pieces for free. One note though: they asked what I want to fix, and I told them that I want to fix rear axel issue, and that I'm aware that there is a new battery pack, which I don't need if it doesn't need to be replaced to address the issue.

    Great comparison and insight, thanks! One thing I noticed, you are using rechargeable (Ikea) batteries, which is better for the environment of course, but you only get 7,2V instead of 9V with "normal" batteries. Have you also done performance tests with 6x 1,5V batteries?

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That 7.2V is more around 8V when they are fully charged, and alkaline batteries give you 9V only when they are brand new so there's not much practical difference based on my experience. I usually do my tests with rechargeables, I don't want to buy brand new alkaline batteries every time I shoot a video :)

    After doing my own comparison between the inventory of parts on the last page of the manuals, I discovered that there has been a change in part numbers of the shock absorber with spring. The old manual lists part no. 6144791, the new manual lists part no. 6378481. Both parts can be found on the LEGO website and have the same description. The only difference is one has tight coils in the middle of the spring, and the other has tight end coils. Both listed as hard springs. The difference in design will affect performance. This part isn’t in the list of missing parts that LEGO provide for the new version. Should they be?
    Does the old spring cause dramas or not perform as expected?
    Based on everyone’s experience, which performs better on this set?

    • @RacingBrick

      I don't think the springs were changes because of this set, and since they are both hard there won't be a significant difference in performance.

In this video I wanted to see what happens with "regular use", if you don't push it hard on obstacles that it cannot climb or you don't drive it against something then it is possible to avoid the cracking. There's no physical difference between the two samples, it was all about the handling.

I've offloaded my Zeros a bit (incl. completely removing the cockpit) to make it light and robust (resistant to falls), now I'd like to rebuilt it back to make it look close to original, and thus I'd appreciate tips for securing the doors and hood as it's briefly demonstrated in your video. I also appreciate your solution to fix the rear axle issue using bricks, I've secured it myself (before learning about your fix) by using cable zip ties :-) Keep it going, all the best for 2023, Pavel

      Ok - just got off a 20 min call with LEGO customer service. Shout out to CSR Maggie she was very helpful.
      After some prodding by me (thanks to this video) and a "brief" hold, they did confirm that changes were made, and that both new and old versions are shipping.
      They can initiate a return/exchange, but cannot guarantee that another old version will not be shipped out.
      They have a readily available list of the parts that are different from the original set and are willing to ship those out with the exception of the new hub (with the screws). The parts being shipped to me are:
      6130002 2 ea
      6089119 2 ea
      6310596 2 ea
      6331716 2 ea

      6331574 2 ea
      4206482 2 ea
      4666579 2 ea
      She noted that IF there are any issues using these parts in conjunction with the NEW digital instructions, then I should instead use the digital Australian instructions as those are guaranteed accurate to the new version.
      All very odd, but hope this helps anybody looking to have LEGO rectify this even if it's a messy process.

  • @shroomzzz
    @shroomzzz ปีที่แล้ว

    They probably don't announce changes because thousands of people would call for the additional parts, many of whom probably wouldn't rebuild it or would demand a new book. Models like the Zetros are really pushing the envelope of what you can do with plastic gears. 95% of the people who buy this model probably think it's the best design ever. While a faithful reproduction of the Zetros, it suffers from low ground clearance, poor approach angle, and the absolute inability to do much more than climb carpeted ramps. Mine is disassembled for parts (one of the greatest features of LEGO!) It goes without saying that the licensee probably has a say as well: Mercedes might not like the overall sloppy design of the hood and doors. I expect similar changes for 42143 Ferrari as well. You are an AFOL rockstar, RacingBrick...keep up the good work!

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks :) I would argue with the carpeted ramp part, if you saw my garden off-road video it can actually climb a thing or two. Ground clearance is poor without a doubt, but with the reinforced rear axle it was not that bad :)

      @bami2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RacingBrick All the other hubs I have are snap-ons and I really dislike how this is probably going to end up with accidentally leaving batteries in the box for prolonged time.
      With the older style it's really easy to at least get the battery holder out of the box and store it somewhere, it breaks the circuit completely so there is less chance of the batteries passively draining and start leaking. I've had to scrape the terminals of my old 9v boxes often, but that was with nicd's so maybe with nimh's it's less of a problem.
      There's still no word on an official permanent-ish lipo battery pack and the kickstarter for one just died.
      And why sending back, I could get a full refund and try somewhere else to get old stock that still has the older style hub.
      Although I've thought it over and I'll probably just build it and get a lipo when eventually one shows up, but it's a bit of a downer that all new sets will have the screw boxes.
      On the upside, I guess it makes it easier to identify which hub is which now :)

    Thank you for answering the question that Lego could not. I purchased 2 of these sets at a big discount from a leading toy store. 2 for £300.
    I always use the online instructions on my tablet because my eyes are not what they used to be and I can zoom in on hard to see steps on my tablet.
    I first noticed there was something wrong when the instructions needed red axles but I had yellow axles, and then i found more errors. I checked the instruction manual
    to find it was different to the online instructions.
    I asked the staff in my local Lego Store if there was 2 versions of the set and if there was why is there only the new instruction online. They did not know but said the would contact Lego customer services. They are still waiting for an answer.

    The video is of good quality as always, but it surprises me every time when I hear that this is supposed to be a kid's toy, and that the argument structure is based upon it. For 300€, I expect something that is of good quality, kid's toy or not. Most people buying this are millenials anyway.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In the age of $500 game consoles I don't think a 300 EUR set cannot be considered as a kid's toy solely based on its price. Although LEGO's adult fanbase is growing, the majority of the buyers (and the target audience for all RC sets) are still kids or teens. In this case the point is that this is an indoor RC toy, and not an outdoor performance crawler with a specific AFOL group in focus, that's all.

    • @antonk.653
      @antonk.653 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RacingBrick That was not my point. Dismissing quality issues with "kid's toy" arguments is only leading to self-deceit, and then misery. Also, some parent is going to buy this product for their kids, it's not going to be the teens themselves. Therefore, this marketing strategy would make Lego look even worse.
      The (initial) trial truck is just plain bad, regarding the sloppy hood and doors, the atrocious powered up system plus smartphone necessity, and the abysmal steering and turn radius.
      One good thing is there with the smartphone functions though. The x-ray function is incredible, this really helps in understanding and having fun with the piece.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@antonk.653 I made a lot of videos about the set, and none of them tried to dismiss any issues with the "kid's toy" argument. Even in this video, I pointed out that for some people the cracking issue might never happen *because* they are using it as a kids toy and won't push it ever beyond its limits, but others might want to have trial truck performance and capabilities.
      This might not be a good set based on your expectations, and I also think there are MOCs with way better off-road performance. But - and it is also important to accept - there are a lot of LEGO customers who are happy with this performance, and don't want anything more. Creating a product for a such a wide range of buyers is always a challenge, and will always have trade-offs.

    • @antonk.653
      @antonk.653 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RacingBrick I disagree, perhaps also on my own biases. In my opinion, the quality of Lego products can be measured, quantitatively. This product is relatively bad, even for Lego standards. That people still buy it, does not invalidate it being bad, because there are more forces at play in a free market than just quality.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @antonk.653 I still think people have different expectations. There are sets that I consider pretty bad, like the Ferrari 488.
