This is the man who produced the films of Harold Lloyd, Laurel and Hardy, and the Our Gang/Little Rascals. He deserves not only the honorary Oscar, but the respect and gratitude of every current film maker in Hollywood.
@ashleelmb Yep exactly. He fought against former Our Gang kids to give them their rightful residuals and likeness rights when TV was introduced. All the former kids wanted was 15-20% residuals for likeness, and he fought against it. To hell with Hal Roach.
This brings back some marvelous memories! I remember that my brother and I were a bit incredulous (In an amused way!) over Spanky asking Mr. Roach to reach back over 7 decades to recall what Hollywood was like in 1912! Back then, 72 years seemed like forever to this then 19 year old. Oh, how times have changed! Thank you very much for sharing this! CHEERS!
He gave Stan Laurel a hard time, but that's all forgotten about. You know what, it really is.true that Roach is in oblivion, whereas Laurel and Hardy are still remembered. So much for living to be 100.
Oh aren't you little Mary Sunshine. Hal Roach ran his own studio and produced everyone from early Harold Lloyd to the Our Gang comedies to drama to comedy. I dare say LB Mayer is unknown to the You Tube generation (unless in Film school) so what's your point. go soak your head.
If that award was being given today they would probably boo him over some stupid ass magnified issue. The fact they even got up (eventually) was a miracle.
Exactly he was in his late 80s or early 90s or close to it. They should have been standing when he walked out there without assistance. Mind was still sharp too.
Poor Mr Roach. A he started rambling on you could feel the discomfort in the place. It seemed he was gonna keep going till he forgot what he was there for.
Funny to think Hal lived to age 100...and after that came his REAL memorable Oscar moment, which also gave Billy Crystal the moment he considers his proudest moment as a comedian.
it is sad to say that most of the kids that played in the little rascals didn't live long lives. Most of them died young. For a group of kids that made so many people laugh including myself, I wish they would have been able to enjoy life longer than they did. May God Bless there Souls. Little Rascals will always be treasured.
I don't agree. I am only aware of a few of them dying young. One became a doctor, many created successful businesses. Jackie Cooper did fine and so did Robert Blake until he did too many drugs and started killing people. The statistics on that particular group of children does not lean toward tragedy and is fairly the same for any group of children.
And Farina for example had a distinguished career in the army and then later caring for the disabled and people with special needs. He lived a long fruitful meaningful life of service and universal respect.
I guess you mean most of the notable ones died young. Jerry Tucker, Dickie Moore, Joe Cobb, Dorothy DeBorba, Jack Davis, Jay R Smith, Jean Darling, Waldo, and many more lived long.
Ernie "Sunshine Sammy" Morrison- the first black actor given a long term movie contract by Mr. Roach in 1919. Unlike most of his Our Gang peers- he lived into a comfortable and prosperous old age.
It's a pity that the names with the exception of mr. george spanky mcfarland couldn't be there to honor their terrific boss ironically, he outlived just about all these wonderful people noted by his former employee ,jackie cooper.
There were many individuals that worked in the series who were alive during this time. They just didn't attend the event. Some of them their actual names weren't known and even the ones that were known, some of them contact wasn't known.
Great respect for Jackie Cooper, but many of Harold Lloyd's best films weren't produced by Hal Roach, but by Lloyd himself. Among the great and timeless films that Lloyd himself produced were Girl Shy, The Freshman (his highest-grossing silent feature), The Kid Brother, and Speedy, his final silent film. It's a shame that Buster Keaton didn't produce his own films in his prime, as Lloyd and Chaplin did.
I’m not a fan of sugarcoating Hal Roach. He was a control freak and never gave people he employed like Stan Laurel the credit for writing and directing that he deserved.
Shame on the academy for not preserving Hal Roach studios as the birthplace of comedic cinema. All that's left at the site is a plaque that's easy to miss even if you're looking for it.

Looked pretty good for 92. Hal was a gift from God. RIP.
Didn't sound too good though...

How incredibly cool that Sunshine Sammy was there in the audience! The very first Rascal!

The very first Our Gang/Little Rascal actor cast by Roach. For that reason alone he's probably my favorite Gang-er.

Hal Roach looks like Grandpa from Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986).
