I love that he never forgot to mention Judy. That made me emotional. Judy deserved recognition like this for her body of work in entertainment.

When I was 32 and living in London UK, the boss of the company for which I was working together with the lawyer of the company did a runner with a huge amount of money. I lost everything. Then, I decided not to work for anybody else, ever again. I moved to a different country, started very small and within 10 years I had a little empire of my own. I worked 14 hours a day. It was damned hard but I've never looked back. Life will knock us down but we can choose whether or not to stand back up. There's always a way.

Reputedly, every actor who'd ever worked with him said that Rooney was the best actor with whom they'd ever worked.
If this acceptance speech was extemporaneous, then it is elegant and brilliant.
(Having Bob Hope, an Oscar Eminence Grise himself, present to Rooney was inspired.)

Anyone whoever speaks of him said "he had the ability to do ANYTHING" he was so talented. Played drums and other instruments, sings, dances acts. Others looked on in awe. He was "limited" only by his stature and how Jack Warner saw him. Surely after coming back from service there was a place for him. I know his personal life was the stuff of tabloids, but so what. SOMEONE went to see those many movies and liked them and many people in that town liked HIM. Mickey somebody UP THERE like you too!

Funny, the Louie B mayer joke was probably not a joke, as Mickey loved the guy. How sad to see that almost everyone who was in closeup in the audience is now gone, including the host Richard Pryor. Great to see Jack Lemmon, just beaming for Mick. Miss him too, very much. Mickey was a tough "little" fella, worked hard, and survived Hollywood, and 8 marriages. God Bless them all! Mickey was the best ever. For about a year I kept saying I was going to write a letter to him and procrastinated until now he passed away. One of the things I wanted to tell him was how much he touched my heart in Boys Town. Was just on the Turner channel when he died. Got me again. I am so happy for him that he got the oscar, it sure meant so much to him What a blessing he was.

I have a copy of this and watched the other night. Too bad, you can't see the clip package for Rooney. It was outstanding. He as a true legend, one of the last. RIP.

I know…I don't know why the Oscar channel cuts out the clips. They can't be worried about copyright issues, as they certainly had to get them to put the clips together for the original show in the first place.

That was my immediate reaction. It makes me very sad that the clips of some of Mickey Rooney's wonderful pictures were left out. I think it would make a young person who never saw his work understand better why he AND Judy were so great and why he truly deserved this award and tribute....some of Hollywood's TRUE talents.

I love him so much I kinda cried watching this. Memories of watching his movies as a child are some of my best form back then. RIP Mickey

I met him in person in Arlington Heights in 1975 and he was just as sweet a guy as you would think. Absolutely terrific person and actor.

Mickey Rooney is the greatest actor in the world" Sir Laurence Olivier. Yes, you read that right. Olivier was one hundred percent correct. Period. Full Stop. End of Story. Among male stars, Only Guinness, Day-Lewis, Hoffman, Oldman, DeNiro, Stewart, O'Toole, Ryu and Mifune come close

This was in 1983, for a 60 years career; incredibly he was still working 30 years later in 2013. Rooney started at age 3 in 1923, a couple of years before Paul Newman, and Jack Lemmon were born in 1925. Newman and Lemmon died in 2008 and 2001 respectively.
