This is the song every songwriter wishes they had written. No matter who you are there's something about this song that haunts your soul and makes you want to relive the best moments of your life. Masterpiece!
That the B52s even exist is a miracle. With little musical background, and joined only by friendship and a kind of uninhibited love and zest for life, they created something unique. Their sound has brought joy and fun to millions. Including me. May these songs live forever.
@Tessmage Tessera It's a great song and the vocals are perfectly fine for what it is. In my opinion, they both have serviceable vocals. I think music and singing are highly subjective though. To a select few folks, they sound amazing. To most, they sound...fine. Think about it: What famous female vocalists couldn't sing those parts. If you say virtually all of them, you are correct.
I'm 60yrs old & do vocals & guitar in a Pink Floyd tribute group, and it's really difficult to keep it up at my age! Theses guys are 63, 70, & 73 and are full of energy & can still hit it on their vocals!! I wish I'd known about this concert so I could've tried to go! They were so unique!
@@sunjester8254 that Fred geezer has had quite a few drugs in his system in the past, not sure about the others - must have been on something special to write a wacky song like Rock Lobster !

@@Buc_Stops_Here That's because Keith Strickland specifically spent time to learn to play exactly as Ricky did in the two year hiatus they took following Ricky's death (if I remember the details correctly).

Man o man, what great memories. Used to dance to this at the clubs around Atlanta and listen to it on WREK Album 88 in Atlanta. Made their own rock sound like no one else.
I was in college when this came out (so you can tell we're in the age ballpark) - it was such a wild kick in the butt - it woke everyone up from the early 80s doldrums. And the looked so provocative at the time with the crazy bee hives and this wonderfully ambiguous (at the time) lead singer. And the incredible thing is that now, 40+ years later, they sound the same!!! UN-freaking-Believable.. Rock on Rock Lobster....
Great performance. The odd thing about the B-52s is that their music taps into something I can't quite define, a feeling, an electric, animated sense of both wonder and dread that I (anyway) associate with the early '60s. Yes, this stuff is incredibly fun, but there's a dark undertone in much of their work that lends it a peculiar power. I wish I could spend some time with them and explore the subject. They're grossly underrated if they're considered just a sort of party band.
There is allways a veil of dark gloom thats hovering invisibly above and right through every youthly leisure culture, especially excessive "fun" movements like the "surf'n fun"- culture of the US westcoast/"californication" during the early 60ties: Its the neurotic denial of growing older, slowly losing the beauty and naive freshness of youth and the nearing of weakness and death! -'"Below strongness, makeup and sexual potency lures the knowing, that you are just on a strictly limmited time travel, that will definitely come to an end and you will be outhrown and casted away from the circle of happy, young and constant partying people!" (T.C. Boyle) - The youth culture is nothing more then a moratorium - a small "island of the sun" without sorrow and taking - care - of - anything - the whole cruelity will appear when you someday find out that you're not welcome anymore, because the next generation of fun-seekers had taken over your playground and THEIR fashion, language, signs and symbols are no longer yours.... Their world is nice, crazy and colorful, but also pretty unreal - and thats, what i see in the "message" of the music of tze B-52s.... ( If you know the movie "the beach" - this is a good example, how you can show or describe this using the cinematic arts!). Beyond the surface of constant fun and exaggerated celebration of youth lies a shady and cruel ideology of unspoken exclusivity, which shows no mercy, when you trespass the perimeter lines of age..... Its one of the causes, why a lot of "immortal" heroes of their youth generation at a certain point of recognition decide to end their life and commit suicide, because they can not stand the message, that soon their time will come to an end and they're sentenced to decay and become old, uninteresting farts....
