It's because she's singing in a lower key than she typically does. More of her chest voice than her higher register. I really like her in this range too. She undoubtedly sounds great.

I think getting cast in Wicked has been so good for her. She's learning broadway skills and how to sing in a healthy way. She's not forcing it, there's not much strain. This is a great performance.
She started as a Broadway actress on 13.

The work is paying off, I love this new sound, I love the healthy voice.

And I think she's referencing her one time public outburst with someone when she talks about nit being able to bite her tongue. And now she can't say anything. She sits in silence with the TRUTH about what happened between them. Which is likely that he couldn't sort himself out. He wanted freedom and they walked away. I like her natural voice rather than the automated one. This is the best version, in my opinion.
The way she's basically crying out the "I'll wait for your love" parts of the song, those are the cries of pain. 😭 Hoping that a loved one will come back to you, that they'll find the love they once had for you and come back, even though you know that maybe it's best if you're just alone but can't let go ("so for now, it's only me... and maybe that's all I need"). The lyrics are so heavy with emotion.

(But her voice is also too soft or breathy for me to comfortably listen to like at the 1st sentence of the bridge, even though that sounds EXACTLY how is it like in the studio version.) This is maybe the first time i've heard some nervious and pitchy things in her voice and it even feels good, They are humans, live things and its hard to try to hide it through your voice and we should support and understand how vulnerable is a moment with a personal song. Sounds beautiful anyway, just more human.
