I used to sing this at boarding school. It was a religious school and we had to go to church every day before lessons (twice on Sunday). You might think getting 450 teenage boys to sing with enthusiasm at 8.30 am was hard work but our choir master did it. I have to say, we enjoyed it and sang it with great pride and at a high volume.

I’m a proud Scotsman. I doubt I had even heard this before my 18 th birthday. But here’s the thing. Along with the other midshipmen of my term I found myself on a beach late at night, in front of a campfire, in Jamaica. Suddenly somebody started to sing Jerusalem. Within seconds everybody had joined in. Well not quite as I still didn’t know the words and nobody was handing out song sheets. But it was a truly amazing experience, that I can take to my grave. It’s a wonderful song, with such powerful and emotional resonances, and such a straightforward idea of what is right.

As I come from a country whose national hymn is incredibly boring and focuses entirely on how Great we _used_ to be, I second this opinion. It is so much more moving, noble and motivating to have a national hymn that focuses on what a country could and should become instead of just what it had been.

@@thegentlemanfish7504 I am Swedish. We only got a national hymn and a national day because everyone else had one and some conservative dude in the 1860:ies thought we should have them too. They have never been that important in a psychological sense. (We have tons of other national symbols that matter much more).
Now the thing is, Sweden in the 19th century would really have needed a hymn like "Jerusalem". The country was incredibly poor and backwards and would have needed to unite in a vision of how it could be better. Instead all this conservative dude could come up with for an anthem was a song about how cool we were when we were a local superpower for a short while in the 17th century wich must have felt like an insult to impoverished workers who had to sing the damn thing on official occasions. It was the upperclass' Idea of nationalism that was projected onto a workingclass that needed something different.
(Sweden has a millennia long tradition of free peasants and that has helped us develop a culture very well suited for a democracy. Us being a local superpower during those years stopped us from being gobbled up by empires where serfdom was still in practice and If that had happened society had been damaged from that to this day as it is in Russia. So the fact that we were an empire back then was actually beneficial to the working class even in the 19th century. But that is not what the song was about.)
