  • A brief history of guitar development in four minutes, from its first appearance in the late 15th century to the present day, featuring selections of guitar music from 1551 onwards. This video accompanies an article available at earlymusicmuse....

This is a revised version of a previous video, ‘A history of the guitar in four and a half minutes’, which was removed due to a copyright claim over a short segment of music. Those 44 seconds (which disallowed the whole 4½ minute video) were used for educational purposes, with my own commentary, used non-commercially, with zero effect on the potential market for the original work - indeed, I was promoting the original work - and I was therefore using it in complete compliance with the law of fair dealing as I understood and understand it. The same principle applies to the content in this video.

What is the difference between Vihuela and Guitar in terms of body and neck construction in the early period ? Was the Vihuela easier to make/cheaper than a Lute? What was the role of Naples in the evolution of Guitar? Where can we learn more about 1880s steel string guitars? No such instrument in Europe at that time? Role of Hawaii in steel string Guitar? TY for beautiful video :)

Thank you for a very interesting set of questions.
In the late 15th and into the 16th century, both the vihuela and guitar were constructed from parts rather than carved from solid wood (as the gittern and citole previously were carved), and both had necks with tied gut frets. The difference was in the size - the guitar was considerably smaller - and number of courses - vihuela 6 courses, guitar 4 courses. For much more, see earlymusicmuse.com/vihuela-and-viola-da-mano/ and earlymusicmuse.com/guitarhistory/
Preference for the vihuela over the lute wasn’t connected with ease/difficulty of making or cost (each of which wouldn’t be very different), but with the sound each instrument produces and national tastes - see earlymusicmuse.com/vihuela-and-viola-da-mano/
Naples was the place the first surviving 6 string guitar was built - by Giovanni Battista Fabricatore in 1791. See earlymusicmuse.com/guitarhistory/
For the first steel string guitars in the 1880s, again see earlymusicmuse.com/guitarhistory/
For the role of Hawaii, do you mean the Hawaiian guitar specifically? For that, see th-cam.com/video/iy9XLM9XIXg/w-d-xo.html

Could some medieval instruments like the Guitarra Latina\ Morisca and the Carolingian Cythara be considered precursors to the Renaissance guitar, or were those not related?

The guitar is a late 15th century instrument, first attested in Germany and Spain. See earlymusicmuse.com/guitarhistory/

There were no guitars in Moorish Spain, if by that you mean medieval Iberia. The guitar is a late 15th century instrument, first attested in Germany and Spain.
