Ya he's got that prefect early 20th century accent. I dont know if it has a name. It's not mid-Atlantic altho it's contemporary with it. You often hear it in 30-40s newsreels
I'll never forget the first time I read this story. The moment the narrator sees his companion had died left chills down my spine that have never left me.
I consider this story the base for all Lovecraftian RPGs, such as the Call of Cthulhu, and the like. It introduces the term investigaton, the buying of equipment and weapons, allies, discovered clues, minor, but not total, loss of sanity, from what was seen, and the like.
Phenomenal Sheer Best Pure Finest Masterful King of the orchestrated by HIM Tale Mr HP Lovecraft reigning best good great King of Horror, Fantasy, Truths of Action Inspire Endlessly both strong and Immortal True Beautiful: inspire form to Twilight Unbroken and My Immortal melodrama romance tale Story for my fiction Novelist upcoming career by me PAUL Jack Lee Middleton, I love HP Lovecraft,.
Its interesting to think about how he makes such a big deal in the beginning about how his companions are particularly muscular, which doesnt seem like a big deal until you realize this was written in 1922 and Jack LaLanne didnt open the first real lifting gym until 1936
I have always felt one very important thing was missing from this story, that would have cleared things up as to how the narrator survived the initial encounter. His saying he opened his eyes a moment when the arm fell across his chest when sleeping would support this theory. It should have been mentioned that the narrator had both a blue and brown eye, at the end of the story.
This is by far the best narrator out there for this story.

Read Far Below by Robert Bloch. Its set in New York in the subway station where you will find the same ghoul/creatures.
