"Would it be alright if me and my alien friends came over and showed you the secrets of the universe?" "Yes, but only after my mother has gone to bed. I wouldn't want to frighten her." Respect. Miss you, mom.
I read the Jacques LeClerq translation of The Fleur de Mal when I was 8, or in 2nd grade however old you are then. oh boy, gotta say, most people don't learn about ennui as young as i did
I read Alan Dean Foster’s novelization of Star Wars when I was seven, and I also read Frankenstein, A Christmas Carol, and Treasure Island that same year. My mom taught me to read at age three using Dick and Jane books, comic strips, and comic books, followed by Little Golden books and Dr. Seuss. Reading has always been a great comfort to me, but now at 50, my eyesight is failing, so audiobooks have become my favorite pastime.
This story is well-read, and, as a stand-alone story, it is pretty good. The problem I’ve always had with it is its use of the Great Race of Yith from Lovecraft’s story “The Shadow Out of Time.” In that story, the Yithians as they appear (enormous rugose cones with four, flexible stalks surmounting them) are inhabitants of a primordial Earth, natives of it, even, and not some distant planet as this story implies.
But the Yithians' Shadow Out of Time for of great rugose cones and tentacles at the apex... like thats taken straight from the Shadow Out of Time and those creatures are of Earth, the Yith moved their minds into those bodies and abandoned some unmentioned form on the planet they inhabited prior... this story was released posthumously. I've got to assume August Derleth didn't quite understand this point and furthmore... the Yith say they intend to inhabit the beetle race after mankind... not mankind itself.

Set this tale in modern times. Now imagine that the alien beings chose the face of Eminem. Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?
Are you implying that Eminem is on the same level as Poe?
@@maddockemerson4603 Yes.
