    You can reduce fan noise by upgrading the stock 40mm fan to a Noctua fan. They're usually about $15-20 per fan, but they can cut the volume of the fan by almost 50%

    Beer giant MillerCoors has acquired Minneapolis-based Crispin Cider Company-a rapidly growing producer of European-style hard apple ciders.
    Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the purchase includes Colfax, California-based Fox Barrel Cider Company-which Crispin acquired in 2010. Fox Barrel produces various pear ciders and operates a cidery in Colfax, where Crispin's products are contract brewed.

    I really appreciate how your videos help new hams (and old ones like me, too). Your suggestions in this video are spot-on! I operate 100W CW portable from a cabin using an Inverted L with the Palomar Engineers "Bullet" 9:1 unun and their Bullet 55 instructions (20 feet vertical wire with a MFJ extendable mast and a wood dowel extension, 35 feet horizontal wire, and about 50 feet of coax going to a choke right before the rig). I find the SWR from 80 through 10 meters is below 2:1, which means there is a compromise going on. Still, CW QSOs state side and DX to Europe is no problem from here in the west when the bands are open. Come, come back to the 9:1 dark side. And thank you for what you do for ham radio.

    I got here through Modern Rogue! I grew up with a father who was an old-school ham. I loved hanging out in his den and just listening to him scanning through the bands and frequencies. But, alas, I don't know how to even start! Is analog equipment still a thing? I love vintage style and the nostalgia of the old Heathkits.

    I don't know know if it was corrected during the live chat, but actually, a "crystal radio" was called a crystal set because it used an actual galena crystal which was sensitive to RF. My first made crystal set included the galena crystal in a mount (about the size of a dime). You actually "tuned" your radio by moving a wire (the one I made used a safety pin) across the crystal. There was no tuner per se. This was probably about 1966 or so. Fun stuff for sure!

    Josh, I just have to say, a big wholehearted thank you. Your content, along with a few other TH-camrs, got me through my Tech and General license. I have made numerous mistakes, thankfully none too expensive, and learned a lot in the process. To name a few, don't try to hold an antenna while transmitting 50 Watts on VHF, it's crazy how well a simple monoband HF dipole works when cut properly, don't spend so much time worrying about it, HF radios are pretty tolerant of high swr, as long as you don't key up on full power, a few seconds probably won't hurt it, digital is not as easy as it looks, you will have ALC issues, having an HF antenna too close to the house leads to RF in the shack, and last but not least, make sure to inform your father that your HF antenna is on the ground before he starts mowing... Again, your content has helped me so much over the past eight months and I'm very thankful that you make these videos to try and help new hams avoid some of the more discouraging mistakes. I'm sure I'll learn plenty more from your videos for years to come, 73 de W8IJC

    I remember frequently checking out Alfred Morgan's "Boys' First Book of Radio and Electronics" quite frequently from my elementary school library. This would have been in the late 90's that they still had it on the shelf. I would love to get myself a copy of that book, but they are so expensive. I know its just wishful thinking, but maybe we can get the publisher to reprint it...

    Re: learning morse. code. I taught myself the code a different way than most recommend. I know the alphabet. Taking what I already know I put the dots and dashes beside each character. I used a tone to send the characters. I took any piece of printed paper and "sent" it to myself. At first i did one character at a time. Then by repetition i would send a known character without looking at the paper. Very soon i didn't need the alphabet code page at all. Learning to receive is much harder. I tuned a cw receiver to someone sending. At first i only got 1 of ever 5 or 6 characters. Soon i was receiving easily. I was copying 15 words per minute on my novice test just to see how fast i was. If you practice with a friend inconvenience is a big problem. Coordinating with someone every time u want to practice. The way i used i could practice without coordinating with anyone. I stopped when i got the beginners "code headache" and after i rested i picked right back up again. Learning with a companion as in the military is fine if your friend knows he will be disciplined for not cooperating. Military style training is the only method I've seen promoted. I did it all by myself and easily passed the 20 wpm at my extra exam.

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed receiving seems to be the hard aspect for most.

    The funniest part about the startup was the pansies in the chat saying "turn off the F* autotune or whatever that is" or "Lose it or lose me". Man. If that is all it takes to upset people, then we are all doomed. Looks like all they needed to do was wait just a moment before getting their tiny little panties tied into knots. Josh fixed it real quick. Get a grip people.

    Josh, thanks so much for what you do. I am new to radio , & your videos really help.
    Concerning the issue you addressed with the Baofengs possibly getting there "frontend" overloaded when adding an upgraded antenna. I have had this issue. I have a Baofeng GT-3 mark III I added a super elastic signal stick, as well as a Diamond SRJ77CA. Both really hurt the receive on the radio. Anyone know of any links to any more info on this?
    Also, I was thinking of buying a TYT TH-UV8000e next. Does anyone know how the front end on these radios are, and if they would have any problems handling an upgraded antenna ? thanks

    30:31 I don't think it's a Baofeng issue, probably just the antenna they have isn't resonant. I've got four U5-5R's purchased within the last year that all work great with better antennas. I've used all of them with either 1/4 or 1/2 wave dipoles I made no problem. I hooked one up to my massive 20' tall base station collinear antenna I made and I checked into a simplex net over 30 miles away from my "terrible" home location down in a shallow valley and I also just used a smaller more portable collinear I made with a different UV-5R to make a few repeater contacts and check in to a net also about 30 miles away on Friday...

    On the "how many thought BaoFeng can talk to people in other states hundreds of miles away"...
    I just watched a video of a guy in Georgia talking on a UV-5R to guys on the west coast, and personally listened to guys in Idaho, hundreds of miles from me the other night while sitting on my couch using the 19 in. antenna that came on my BF-F8-TD, and they were crystal clear. I would have tried to talk to them but I was still waiting for my call sign.
    Can't a BaoFeng using a repeater talk to people in other states or even the international space station???
    Now I'm confused.

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The radio is capable of line of site communication, that is why it can hit the ISS. If you talk on a repeater and you hear people very far away on that repeater, it is like the repeater is linked via the internet or another RF connection.
      The Baofeng is a simple VHF/UHF, it isn't capable of beyond line of sight communications except for a very specific atmospheric phenomina called sporadic E. However that isn't something we depend on to make reliable communication.

      Notarubicon has really good straight forward videos, do does Dave Cassier, no sure of the spelling but he has Of in a circle in the upper right hand of his video's, there's a few others that seem pretty good, I just don't remember them. They get to the point, are very clear, concise, etc! I was hoping this guy would go down the list of the 10 things, over 30 minutes and I still don't know if he listed even one! This is not a "crash" course, this is one long drawn out, when will it end course. To be fair, this is the first video of his that I watched, well, only a little over 35 minutes. I'm moving on.
