Hi, I don't know whether you saw my comment but you and Ham Radio 2 have very different output values on several of the Bands. He put its down to poor quality control, which if true doesn't speak well for the Brand and doesn't encourage me to buy it. He says he's getting 1.5W on !.25M. He claims his readings are accurate as I'm sure you do. So who or what to believe?

I understand why keeping spurious emissions to a minimum is an admirable goal and all, but let's keep things in perspective. We're talking about a 4-watt transmitter with a far less-than-ideal antenna. How much interference are we really generating? Even your own special Icom receiver one foot away couldn't pick anything up.

That's good to hear. That means one less proprietary cable to source and carry around (for charging) and one multi-use cable.
With all the electronics we support nowadays, I keep a kit handy that contains all the cords and adapters needed. The less proprietary equipment needed, the easier it is to source in an emergency or due to breakage. While the kit isn't too big, the smaller I can have it, the more I have room for other concerns.

Got mine in the mail Saturday. So far, not bad. Been playing with the local 6m repeater, I am hitting it, but nobody came back to me. I did test and discover it does not have AM TX. May grab another 6m HT, (Wouxon makes another I guess?) and try some simplex repeater testing? Or use the 705.
A few things I don’t like about it, or a fan of the screw off cover for the K plug, and unimpressed that they didn’t use an IP rated jack instead of a fully removable (and losable) cover. There is what I assume to be a dummy cover on the other side, that screw is covered by a cheap black sticker. Not a fan of the default ptt mapping, but fully programmable buttons makes up for that. Build doesn’t feel as good as KG-UV9D.
Doesn’t do full duplex so not as useful for birds.
Preliminary testing compared to kg-uv9d led me to believe the speaker is not as good either.
But a quad band HT is still too cool to pass up.

I'm curious how rigorous the testing for the FCC Compliance was performed. I gather that independent labs do the testing for the manufacturer to supply results, so there's incentive to pass customers' equipment to continue to work with them further.

    • @ExtremeSquared

A properly built certification system includes audits and harsh consequences for labs who fail audits.

The FCC doesn't do much. The process is an independent lab does all the tests. Then compiles a report and files it with the TCB (Telecommunications Certifications Bodies) which essentially signs off on the report or raises any questions. So as long as the report from the independent lab looks good then the equipment gets passed. Sure the equipment can be audited. But guess who does the audit? The same place that did the initial report

Bottom line - not legal HT, and its 220 MHz band essentially doesn't exist, and it's $200. You aren't the only tester who found it failed testing. Any ham who uses an illegal transmitter shouldn't be a ham. The FCC will agree with me on that. Amateur radio is one of the very few self-policing government licensed services. But it won't be for much longer if we're willing to transmit on illegal equipment. Other hams tested each of us and signed their names on a request to the FCC to issue us a license. Would hams running radios with illegal outputs be willing to walk up to each of those hams who signed on the dotted line for them and say, "I run an illegal transmitter, and I don't care who I spew trash on or what services I interfere with." Would they be willing to do that? Would they be willing to tell an FCC field engineer that? Because that's what they are telling the world every time they key that transmitter and announce their callsign. Anybody with a $60 TinySA and an antenna can tell from several blocks away if a ham is regularly spewing illegal harmonics, and they will. We are responsible for our transmissions, period. Don't run illegal transmitters. We agreed not to when we were issued our licenses. If you want to run a rig with a dirty output then add an outboard filter. That's what you are required and expected to do. That's ham radio.

My intention for the Chirp driver is to implement ALL the features the Wouxun CPS provides and then some. Just like I did for the 980P, 1000G, G+, 935G, G+, 9PX, 9GX, 8H. Although the custom color settings may be a challenge. It is coming along nicely but will take some time since Wouxun made significant changes to the memory usage from previous radios that will slow things down a bit.

Are you only using 30dB of attenuation? You should probably have 50dB or more so that you do not overload the input of your TinySA. Some of those spurs are likely generated internally and are not "real" which is why your other radio does not "hear" it.

  • @pauliedweasel
    @pauliedweasel ปีที่แล้ว +3

So is there a process to convert it to out of band transmit? My older Wouxons simply required a key code to unlock out of band transmit but with my recent experience unlocking my TYT UV-88 (Which has the latest firmware ala 2022) I’m guessing that there maybe some hacks necessary on the programming software.

Well, that's a shame, and not being spectrally clean means that this radio is "out" for me. I find the Baofeng GT-5R to be spectrally clean, and a great value. I tested two of them at home, and additionally at the ARRL booth at this years Hamvention. On technical grounds, radios that produce harmonics are "wasting" energy. On ETHICAL grounds, I won't use a radio that may cause harmful interference to others. It also shows that Baofeng CAN play by the rules and deliver a good product, when they want to, and we should have the same expectation of Wouxun. Otherwise, in general, I stick with the YIK radios, but we need competition in the marketplace to keep the prices down! We will see MORE Chinese radios, and they will get better. Its no different than when the Japanese "YIK" radios came on the market and successfully competed against the established American firms now many years ago. 73 DE W8LV BILL

I am not at all convinced my non-engineering, desktop, SDRPlay testing approximates the results of real engineers with real test equipment. I'd like to say that you shouldn't review radios that don't meet the emissions standards, but then if you didn’t review them no one would know how bad some of them are, so keep doing what you're doing! 😊
This is a feature packed HT that hams shouldn't buy. Hams are the first to complain about EMC/RFI from other spectrum users, so Hams need to live by the standards too.

Mine came almost completely full, on a usb a to c cable on a 1.5a charger it was full/green light in 10-15 minutes. I killed it by leaving it playing the FM radio all night and in the morning it took over 4 hours to charge via that same charger. I made it do show voltage instead of branding on boot and it was at 8.4 volts for a long time before the green light came on.

Seen a video it put out 1.5 watts 220MHz 1 watt on 6m. My Yaesu HT does 5 watts on 6m AM & FM. I have two Wouxun GMRS radios the tones don't all work on all of them. My buddies have the same radio. Same tones didn't work. Funny part, Notarubicon promoted the radio and the tone didn't work for his own repeater. Did he make a video and get it fixed? No he didnt. Buytwowayradios couldn't fix it. They actually said use a open tone. You can't use a open tone on the uplink genius.

1.25 meters usually has better propagation than 2m!

neet HT ! love that cross band repeat . starting to see usb C PD charging more now. 6 meters is a interesting band. hard to get much antenna gain on 6 meters unless go long. I got a 4 band mobile radio that FM only as well. but 10meter,6 meter ,2 meter.70cm. no 1.25 meter. we have a 10 meter repeater buy me. part of a link system. 1.25 meter part of that link. only 6 meter repeater buy me is just to far away . the one right buy me is down but still listed . and yes you can use 10 meter and 6 meter repeater's on a Icom IC 7300. lately 10 meters propagation is poor. lots of QRM . same with 6 meters but less QRM . not many HT with 6 meters. like to see that put on better spectrum analyzer . not saying what you have is wrong or bad. just worth taking a outher look. I never rely on one piece of test equipment even if it is a real good one. calabreatation may be off or something. 73's

Curious why you think bidirectional crossband repeat will stress the radio more than one way. If everyone is transmitting on one band and receiving on the other, the radio will be close to 100% duty cycle either way. This is the way we’ve used crossband before where one radio is at the top of the hill and everyone else can see it from their positions. While useful, we found that we rarely had need of it.
