  • My review of the full set of shifter mods that I have done on my Ford Focus RS MK3!
The mods have been happening over the last couple of years in between doing many other things!
I did a review of the initial set of three shifter mods so to check that out, here is a link:
    • ULTIMATE SHIFTER MODS ...
The Cobb short shift plate is made from 6061 T6 Anodized Aluminium Black with Laser Etched COBB logo so is very light weight, strong and really looks cool!
This shortens the gear shift throw by 20%, 30% or a massive 40%, depending on what YOU wish to set it to! It also makes the shift feel more positive which is pretty cool!
The COBB adjustable shift plate / quick shift / short shift is a bolt on solution, bolting onto the stock shift arm so easier and quicker than other competing options.
The Sico Developments shifter cable end bushings, shifter base bushings and transmission cable bracket bushings are all made from quality aircraft grade aluminum. They are therefore very light weight, strong and really look cool - when you are able to see them that is!
The various shifter bushing mods from Sico Developments are all about the shift feel, making it more positive and precise by removing the sloppy slack feeling that is sometimes present in the stock setup.
The stock shifter bushings in all locations are made from a combination of plastic and Rubber. This means that they can bend quite easily when shifting, resulting in a sometimes vague feeling when shifting gear, especially in stock form. The solid shifter bushings are just that - solid - so they will not bend when the stick is moved and pulls the cable but will immediately start moving into gear. Simple and effective!
The different types of bushings have different effects to the feel of the shifting experience and I will detail this in this video. Essentially I was surprised by the most recent bushings that I did, the transmission cable bracket bushings. I left them to last as I thought they would have the least amount of impact but in fact they had more impact than the shifter base bushings so I would highly recommend and indeed encourage you to prioritise them over the base bushings!
The Thicc Boi is a heavy weighted shift knob from the Australian Automotive brand, Likewise. It isn’t just a bit weighted like much of what calls itself weighted on the internet these days - it weighs in a chunky 500g!
It is made from beautifully machined steel as opposed to lighter materials like aluminium or plastic / resin.
To put it’s weight into context, the stock shift knob on the Ford Focus RS MK3 is 154g and the Mountune shifter that it is replacing weighs in lighter at 114g. So as you can see, this is definitely heavy and indeed I can say that it is very noticeable when holding it!
The theory behind the heavy weighted shift knob is that placing a weight on the end of the shifter, it will carry the kinetic energy given to it in the form of momentum when set in motion. The effect this has is a reduction in shift effort. This feels like it is helping to push the gear into place and so it feels easier and smoother when shifting. This then negates the heaviness drawback from the initial shifter modding!
Not only is it a heavy weighted shift knob but it is also elongated rather than being round. This has the further benefit of moving the hand position. This really compliments the weight and completes the setup along with Cobb short shift plate and the the SiCo solid shifter bushings.
Now that I have this excellent shifter setup, there isn't much left that I can do with the factory shifter so the question is now - do I stop here or do I do something more extreme like a full on shifter replacement or sequential gearbox? Let me know in the comments!

I work at a dealership, we just had a focus ST with the Cobb short shifter and bushings come in. The dealership owner wants it back to stock, so I asked if I could take the short shifter and swap the bushings for my stock ones in my RS. The dealership owner was completely fine with it, so me and one of my techs are doing it tomorrow. I am so excited for this, having now experienced the shifter with them installed.

Well you made my mind up on this one thank you. I'll leave The base mounts and do the rest. I know this video is two years old but great content and very informative. I've already watched the other two you have done on what I need to know.

@@AdamRainey added the Boomba weighted shift knob with the JBR shift arm and it made it 100 x better! Thanks for the suggestion in the video. Definitely helped me make the right decision on my shifter setup. Cheers 🍻 Adam!

Great update video. The only thing (apart from quiafy you said) I can think of is the new coolerworx shifter. Whatever your next update will be, I am looking forward to the video and your input/review about the item. Stay safe and healthy

Agree with you on the bracket at the gearbox end - it does flex more than you might think (its the same one on the ST). I wish someone would come up with a stronger fabricated one. But the solid bushings do help a fair bit. On the ST I did Cobb short shift arm (piggy back style) first, set at mid reduction, along with the bracket bushings, followed later on by a Steeda short shift (metal) arm again set at mid reduction together with the metal shifter base bushings. Only thing not done was the actual cable end bushings - I bought them, got lazy, then resold them LOL!

The only other shifter related item that I can think of to install would be the Ford Performance Short Throw Shifter. Ford Part number M-7210-FRS.
I think a sequential gearbox is fantastic for drag racing and track applications due to its strength and short shift times. For a daily driven street car, the whine of the straight cut gears and the necessity to shift through every gear in order on the way up or down, seem to be impractical to me. That is just my opinion, though.

No more shifter mods. How about suspension/coilovers ie: OE struts w/DSC Controller, Öhlins, KW DDC/V3, Tractive w/DSC.
