This is great information. I play jazz on chromatic harmonica. Because of the nature of the instrument (mostly because we’re blowing AND drawing), it is notoriously difficult to achieve an authentic swing feel-especially on medium swing lines. While we may intuitively know what the right feel should be, it’s great to see the pointers outlined as you have done here. I shall definitely be thinking about this the next time I’m practising. 👍

Thanks for taking the time to write, Alan! You know, I work with a chromatic harp player at www.JazzWire.net, and this is one of the things he is doing great with. You are smart to be thinking about it. Glad you found this video, and I hope maybe we'll get to work together at Jazz Wire one day as well.

I always put your lectures while doing laundry every sat morning and you make my day a lot by saying you are so failable lol bravo i will continue practicing until my brain and my body internalize it :) thanks. Your lectures really represent your positive, expressive, openminded, friendly, chill, and creative character and your high self esteem. Thanks again when i visit your region i really wanna buy you a beer or vodka hahahahha thanks again brother. And whenever you add some historical anecdotes in the video, as a jazz lover it is like a rain in drought. Thanks man keep it up

This is exactly what I needed to hear. It truly solves one of my biggest challenges.

The articulation piece is HUGE. It solved (and still solves) a lot of my problems as well. This will be something we dive into further on Jazz Wire, where we'll have the time and the ability to talk so much more with each other. The Articulation Rules (from this video) are very important, but getting them up and running, and working together is the key. We'll get that going on Jazz Wire for sure!.

Okay that does it ! M y favorite players have always been way out wardell and larry mckenna . but your at least as good .maybe even better to my ears . And what a fantastic educator you are . I have been playing guitar since 1948 , but it took many many years to realize that if you can't play it slow, you can't play it fast . I'm just getting into bebop and your lessons are the best ! i am actually a horn player in a jazz guitarist body . my problem learning this stuff is it seems , i beeped when i should have bopped.

Regarding digging even deeper on articulation, my all time favorites for articulation are Cannonball Adderley and Clifford Brown. Would love to see you do a more in-depth video on articulation, as I was mostly a guitar player, but want to better help those horn players in this middle school jazz band. I asked my UNT 1 o’clock alto sax teacher how to articulate like Cannonball. I stuck my ear to his bell and he did a perfect imitation! I never was able to get the notes to pop like that on my alto sax. Clifford and Cannonball played lines with such clarity, beauty and artistry. Love your videos!

Thanks so much Chet. So happy you dig the videos. At this point, getting further into a topic like articulation is something that I'm just not going to do justice to in a 14 minute video. For that kind of stuff, we work in a more organized way at www.JazzWire.net. That said, Cannonball was the MASTER. Whew!!

Watched your video on off-beat articulation, learning the same thing from Jamey Aebersold decades ago. My main instrument at UNT was guitar, doing my best to articulate the bebop lines using hammer-ons and pull-offs. I took sax lessons on the side from a top UNT sax player to improve my jazz articulation and phrasing.
Question - How do you teach young trombone players articulation, since they can’t slur? I’ve heard Clark Terry, Randy Bracker, Bob McChesney and other great trumpet and trombone players teach the doodle method on TH-cam. I’ve even seen a few sax players, one an LA session player, teach the dooden method as another way to articulate. I never thought about it, never had a name for it, but I use the dooden method when I want to ghost an off beat note or series of descending off beat notes, and whenever it sounds right. I can see Sax and Trumpet players having no problem with off beat articulation, since they can slur. How were the trombone players at UNT articulating? You can dig deep with articulation!

Dizzy was artist-in-residence at UCLA for a week when I was there in late 80s. He said he had 13 honorary PhDs from world universities. Dizzy called them his "ORNERY PhDs!!!" ha ha...My mentor/professor was Nazir Jairazbhoy famous Indian ethnomusicolgist and star player. Nazir enjoyed the "ORNERY" joke very much!

Thanks Paddy. Yes, too much of that old "conventional wisdom" isn't a good thing all the time. Some of it isn't wisdom at all!!
