He's singing 10 seconds at a time at a very controlled output. Singing entire songs with long, connected phrases, chorus', verses are actually where the challenge is

Baba O’riley was the first song I thought of. To me, it defines what a rock anthem is. Simple, bombastic, and youthful. Maybe it’s the big dramatic crashing cymbals, the piano pounding out the opening chords, or the way the intro builds into the iconic verses. It’s hard to put it in words, but it’s just got that undeniable anthemic quality to it.
@@breakingthelaw7974 frankly I’m not a huge fan of Baba O’riley. The piano is overly-basic and repetitive, and the closing solo on the violin was an odd choice. I get what you’re saying about the song being overplayed (maybe even cliché), but for a song to be a rock anthem it needs to have that quality of being instantly recognizable by the masses. There’s more to than that even. I wouldn’t consider Starway to be anthemic. It’s maybe the most iconic rock song ever written, but its more of a soaring musical journey than a power anthem. I can think of a dozen better and even more popular rock songs than Baba, but that doesn’t necessarily make them anthems IMO.
That's actually a good call. It's too intellectual, though, I think. It's too complex. It's the reason why "Bohemian Rhapsody" isn't on here. Too many moving parts. A banger, to be sure. Led Zeppelin Whole Lotta Love, OK 1969 but they were the original game changers. Rock on guys, encore!

...and he hung in there through these sessions. The guys can play as long as they have energy. The voice has limited ability and endurance by comparison. The fact that he did a good version of Perry and Mercury just lends credibility to Beato"s work.
Okay... not hating or judging but I felt like these songs deserved a better singer. I wasn't going to say anything until I saw these comments. He is good in his own right so dont think im bashing or anything because i know this was just a list and he couldn't exactly pull an A list singer. I know for sure the video could have been better with someone else.
I thought so too. Being able to jump into the middle of a song and pretty much nail it isn't easy. Singing these songs requires putting at least a little emotion into your voice and I was impressed with how he could turn it on and off at will.
Had to be Queen, and they also have another, We Are the Champions. Some others I would mention are: Judas Priest - Take On All the World Thin Lizzy - Boys Are Back in Town Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water Status Quo , - Caroline. Great video, and your man there has a great voice 👍👍
May I submit for your consideration, "School's Out"? Alice Cooper himself admitted that he wanted to write rock anthems. He wrote several, but this is the one that really hit home.
Rick, I just found you and am binge watching all of your videos! My favorite so far was the 70s and 80s one hit wonders. I’m 63 now so that music makes me happy! 😎👍 You’re so easy to watch and listen to with your enthusiasm and knowledge. Thank you for sharing your passion!
I know, when he started to talk about the no.1 i thought straight away of that song especially when he said about it being played at sporting events but nope he picked the wrong one.
Drift Away is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in my life. I love the message of the song, and it's just a feel good song for when you're going through a rough time. Perfect choice for this list!
@@darrelstevens9707 Yes! That was immediately what came to my mind. I loved every minute of Live from Daryl's House so if Rick can come up with a way of doing live cover without running afoul of TH-cam and the musicians of the song then that will be awesome. The "what makes this song great" where they do a live cover at the end of the segment.
Actually, the moment sporting events were mentioned I realised that, even though there aren't really singable chorus lyrics, Seven Nation Army is one hell of an anthem. I'd personally go as far as to put it alongside, or at least a close second to We Will Rock You. The singbility of that melody and the drive Seven Nation Army has is fascinating, at least to me.
Personally, I've heard seven nation army a hell of a lot more in sporting events in comparison to we will rock you, and I think you're right, it's at least on the same level of not better than we will rock you
Exactly, once he started talking about sporting events I was 100% sure it's gonna be Seven Nation Army, We Will Rock You didn't even cross my mind, honestly.
We all need to take a moment and acknowledge the awesome talent of Jason's. Wow. Also I really appreciate the fact that they went to the trouble of playing all of these songs themselves.
Rick - You are truly a beast. My brother from another mother. Been “trying to learn” guitar on my own for over ten years now. Finally signed up for classes at adult Ed local college. But your channel is my always go to for anything guitar. And while I only understand about 5% of your music theory, I still appreciate all your hard work into every video you make. As a pilot for nearly 50 years now, comparing my skill set to yours is like me flying a Piper Cub and you’re commanding a Boeing 747-400. But we’re both sharing the same air which give me great satisfaction!
Fantastic covers guys! My additions: Queen - We Are The Champions Simple Minds - Alive And Kicking and Don't You Forget About Me Guns 'n Roses - Welcome To The Jungle (blockers, I know ;) )
@@robgraham5016 Saw them live three times in Amsterdam, one time the song lasted fifteen minutes because of the crowd singing along endlessly. The band loved it! :D
@@r3furbish3dbrain12 So did Brian Ferry. Well: their loss. One of the biggest anthems of the 80s if you ask me and I'm glad Simple Minds did it, whether they were the writers or not; I'm interested in the performing, not the writing. Lots of famous bands performed songs that they didn't write themselves; hell: probably more than half of the biggest hits in history haven't been written by the performers themselves. I can understand their reluctance though, saying they only wanted to play material that they'd written themselves. If that's your thing as a band, it's your thing. Simple as that. It just shows how mistaken even the biggest musicians can get.
@@angelinadigrazzia5401 lol....did you see his face when he was done? He can certainly sing a lot of stuff...but I think that was a bit out of his comfort range...I doubt he would want to do an entire Journey set. If he did, he'd need about a week to recover his voice.
I heard We Will Rock You live, in 1980 in Montreal, and I can attest it was AWESOME! It felt like the Forum's roof was about to fall on our heads (and nobody would have cared LOL). Wanted to say, you got an awesome band there. Great great singer!

He will WRECK his voice before too much longer. Steve Perry is a great singer! (BETTER than all of us!)
Carry On Wayward Son IS the definition of rock anthem. Living on a prayer makes it. Not carry on wayward son. I'd switch them out. Carry On once eclipsed stairway to heaven as the most played classic rock song ever.
Wow, Jason Tillery killed it. He can sing everything! I'm a fan. I was getting worried you weren't going to have Living on a Prayer on this list. Great job with the list, Rick!
I would most definitely say that “School’s Out” is an anthem. It’s not just some dumb sing-a-long song. It actually has a message as bizarre as Alice Cooper may be. But I would venture a guess that most of us agree with the message.
Great ones! Just a few I miss: "All right now", "Smoke on the water", "Hey Jude", "Born to be wild", "We're an American band" and "Rock you like a hurricane".
Nailed it! I was sitting here the whole time going "the original rock anthems We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions" which kinda are a single song on the album one right after the other. Good job Rick!
There's a few I wouldn't have included personally, but I would definitely include a Scorpions song - it would have been interesting to include Coast to Coast, a rare example of an instrumental anthem.
Great point that narrowing it down to twenty is a feat in itself. I would've included Elton John's "Philadelphia Freedom," and "Come Sail Away," by Styx.
OMGWTFLOL doesn’t matter if you like ‘em bro by definition they’re rock anthems! He put the cheesefest living on a prayer on it. The list is garbage...free fallin, sweet home Alabama 🤣 not even close to rock anthems, not even rock!
Good choices for rock anthems. I would suggest a few more for the list: Dancing in the Dark or Born in the USA, Bruce Springsteen Summer of 69, Bryan Adams Carry On, CSNY

The Boys Are Back in Town and Jailbreak are two of the greatest anthems. Every time they come on in the radio I can't help but sing along.
@@arthurias7693 Jailbreak!!! I missed that one. Good call.
@@arthurias7693 Cowboy never got the play but it's another great from Lizzy
Mott the Hoople. I like it good call. Rick could do a top thirty.
So glad I found you, great group, what a voice Jason has. I could replace a few with Free, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Slade, everyone forgets Family with Hung Up Down, not forgetting David Bowie with Jean Genie. Led Zeppelin Whole Lotta Love, OK 1969 but they were the original game changers. Rock on guys, encore!
I'm normally twitchy about singers - the one doing the songs here is phenomenal. I like how he did the songs his own way but also hit the original tone and intent of the songs. Great job!

Also, can you make a “That’s What Makes This Song Great” on Santana sometime in the future?
Where is paradise city ?
Agreed about older Santana, he was on fire in the 60's 70's and into the 80's but he's been soul-dead for a couple decades.
BluesLicks101 Supernatural was a great comeback album though
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts*
Wilander Xavier He mentioned at the end why he doesn’t do GnR in his videos.
Sh*t, this singer is f***ing awesome, his voice's so powerful and unique
Nailed the Pearl Jam song, sounds just like Eddie
...and he hung in there through these sessions.
Auto tuned wedding singer nothing more. Would have rather heard nails down a chalk board
Had to be Queen, and they also have another, We Are the Champions.
Some others I would mention are:
Judas Priest - Take On All the World
Thin Lizzy - Boys Are Back in Town
Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water
Status Quo , - Caroline.
Great video, and your man there has a great voice 👍👍
Avenged Sevenfold: Hail to the king
All British
Whoever he is, that guy is one hell of a singer to do all of those particular songs.
What a fun episode! BIG kudos to Jason Tillery for taking on each of those vocalists, AND doing it excellently! Blessings on Y'all...
Holy crap Jason is good! He holds his own on every one of those songs!
I thought the same!!
Agreed, only real stretch imo was Steve Perry..would be for almost anyone..
Came to the comments and to find this exact comment! Couldn’t agree more. Dude rocks🤘🏻
We are the Champions is THE DEFINITION of an anthem. How could it possibly not be there?
I know, when he started to talk about the no.1 i thought straight away of that song especially when he said about it being played at sporting events but nope he picked the wrong one.
I fuckin hate it, it's too overplayed
@@petisebestyen88 Wild guess, but I think that's because it's anthemic.
@@petisebestyen88 That doesn't make it any less of a rock anthem
Possibly because it's a difficult song to sing.
Drift away sounded spot on. Especially the vocals. Amazing
Drift Away is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in my life. I love the message of the song, and it's just a feel good song for when you're going through a rough time. Perfect choice for this list!
Hey here's a fun idea:
What if the four of you and Jack Jones put together a rick beato channel house band to record covers and originals!?
Rick's House.
That’d be awesome actually
You mean Jack Jones that sang the love boat theme?
@@darrelstevens9707 with Rick and the Beatos
Actually, the moment sporting events were mentioned I realised that, even though there aren't really singable chorus lyrics, Seven Nation Army is one hell of an anthem. I'd personally go as far as to put it alongside, or at least a close second to We Will Rock You. The singbility of that melody and the drive Seven Nation Army has is fascinating, at least to me.
Personally, I've heard seven nation army a hell of a lot more in sporting events in comparison to we will rock you, and I think you're right, it's at least on the same level of not better than we will rock you
Also we are the champions but i guess only 1 song per band.
Came on to comment this very same thing... Seven Nation Army should have been top 10, if not top 5 or #1.
Exactly, once he started talking about sporting events I was 100% sure it's gonna be Seven Nation Army, We Will Rock You didn't even cross my mind, honestly.
I thought it was gonna be We are the champions... but then I watch a lot of f1
We all need to take a moment and acknowledge the awesome talent of Jason's. Wow. Also I really appreciate the fact that they went to the trouble of playing all of these songs themselves.
Awesome list Rick! Your vocalist did a great job! 60 yrs old, and listening to Rock since I was 5!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
The U2 vocals here are very spot on. It’s pretty incredible to hear someone do Bono like that.
Yeah that was particularly excellent.
Damn, Jason has an incredible voice. And well done by everyone!
His voice reminds me of Peter Gabriel!
He makes it look so effortless.
@@oddwareect very true
The singer in this video is an ABSOLUTE BEAST!!! He nails every voice and style!!!! The guitar players......Jezzzzz these guys are sooo great!!!
Fantastic covers guys!
My additions:
Queen - We Are The Champions
Simple Minds - Alive And Kicking and Don't You Forget About Me
Guns 'n Roses - Welcome To The Jungle (blockers, I know ;) )
Simple Minds - Don't You Forget About Me - YES good one!
Great minds think alike with Simple Minds. I also put Ghostdancing on my list from them.
Agreed!
Tillery needs some kind of recognition here for covering that wide a spectrum of styles and ranges. That was impressive.
"How many instruments do you play?"
Rick: "Yes"
These musicians are stunning. Especially the singer. Can't get enough of his voice.
No Guns, no party, Btw this dude who is singing is absolutely outstanding.
Bozex sucks that they block everything... probably because of Axl, lol
I like this singer as well. I wish Journey would have asked him to b their lead singer rather than Arnel Pinea!
@@angelinadigrazzia5401 lol....did you see his face when he was done? He can certainly sing a lot of stuff...but I think that was a bit out of his comfort range...I doubt he would want to do an entire Journey set. If he did, he'd need about a week to recover his voice.
Dude...Dobie Grey!!! that was a totally unexpected picks of one of my all time favorite tunes. I will be smiling all day about this one
And having heard Bon Jovi play it years ago, it is a great anthem live
I was surprised too. I think more people like it than we think.
"Drift Away" is one of my personal "anthems"!
I wanna get lost in your rock n’ roll...
It really is anthemic as well. The chorus has that inspirational feel. Rick on stand up bass and the band unplugged was sweet.
The singer could comfortably cover for any rock frontman ever and still sound right
Where have you been all my life. Smiled through this whole video. Thank you.
I heard We Will Rock You live, in 1980 in Montreal, and I can attest it was AWESOME! It felt like the Forum's roof was about to fall on our heads (and nobody would have cared LOL). Wanted to say, you got an awesome band there. Great great singer!

Steve Perry is a great singer! (BETTER than all of us!)
What a trip down memory lane. I'm a 66-year-old female. I'm smiling ear to ear. Thank you, Rick.
Me too❤
Carry On Wayward Son IS the definition of rock anthem. Living on a prayer makes it. Not carry on wayward son. I'd switch them out.
Carry On once eclipsed stairway to heaven as the most played classic rock song ever.
I’m also 66. Aren’t we lucky we had such fun tunes?
Wow, Jason Tillery killed it. He can sing everything! I'm a fan.
I was getting worried you weren't going to have Living on a Prayer on this list. Great job with the list, Rick!
What about Alice Cooper's, "School's out" ?
A glaring omission
@Josh Kuhn - I agree! Love that song, too! :-)
I would most definitely say that “School’s Out” is an anthem. It’s not just some dumb sing-a-long song. It actually has a message as bizarre as Alice Cooper may be. But I would venture a guess that most of us agree with the message.
Some very underrated guitar on that album.
absolutely
Great ones! Just a few I miss: "All right now", "Smoke on the water", "Hey Jude", "Born to be wild", "We're an American band" and "Rock you like a hurricane".
Hey jude rock?
“We’re an American band” is possibly the most American rock n roll song ever made
"Rock you like a hurricane" was the first song that came to mind
@@sukhchainsingh1776 It includes an electric guitar and it was made by a rock band so I think it’s included

Nailed it! I was sitting here the whole time going "the original rock anthems We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions" which kinda are a single song on the album one right after the other. Good job Rick!
I think first place would be a split between “We Will Rock You” AND “We Are The Champions”
Totally agree. UMG being their usual dick selves claiming on this.
I was thinking the same thing while watching this.
People say it is subjective...they are wrong. You are correct.
Great list of songs, and good job on the performance.
i 100% disagree. i can recognize that the songs are well written, but freddie mercury ruins queen
Patrick McPheeters Runs Queen ... fixed that for you. :)
Scorpions - Rock You Like A Hurricane? Great list. I could never narrow it down to a top twenty, I love them all.
There's a few I wouldn't have included personally, but I would definitely include a Scorpions song - it would have been interesting to include Coast to Coast, a rare example of an instrumental anthem.
Boston More than a feeling
Great point that narrowing it down to twenty is a feat in itself. I would've included Elton John's "Philadelphia Freedom," and "Come Sail Away," by Styx.
One more! Alice Cooper "School's Out."
I saw Van Halen, Dokken, and the Scorpions all together. Monsters of Rock what a concert.
Anthem- Europe The Final Countdown

dewdew34 totally agree. They should have been 1 & 2 followed by Boston more than a feeling!
If he would have picked either of those 2 cheesefests, I would have unsubscribed.
OMGWTFLOL doesn’t matter if you like ‘em bro by definition they’re rock anthems! He put the cheesefest living on a prayer on it. The list is garbage...free fallin, sweet home Alabama 🤣 not even close to rock anthems, not even rock!

Foreigner’s “Juke Box Hero” is the first sing-along rock anthem that comes to my mind.
Urgent
Absolutely one of my all time favorites.
You could put "Hot Blooded" in there, too...
Good choices for rock anthems. I would suggest a few more for the list:
Dancing in the Dark or Born in the USA, Bruce Springsteen
Summer of 69, Bryan Adams
Carry On, CSNY
“More than a feeling“ should also be in the list imho.
I was surprised that is wasn't included, given Rick's love for Boston. Too hard to sing for it to be included, perhaps?
We will rock you #1 and We are the Champions??????
or longtime, maybe both lol - they are both in my top ten driving around burning one songs
Was thinking the same thing - should really have been in the Top 5.
More than a Feeling should be on EVERY list.

Perfect comment, was thinking the same thing when he belted Pride... I'd pay to see him live.
Final Countdown. Definitely
I think he chose we will rock you instead. that one is more recognizable I think and you can't put more than one song from a group on this list IMO
@@hanj31 If he could put more than one song per artist/band, let's be real, the entire list would be made of Queen's songs: We will rock you, we are the champions, bohemian rhapsody, i want to break free, the show must go on, another one bites the dust, who wants to live forever, radio gaga, don't stop me now, killer queen, somebody to love, I want it all, hammer to fall, the list just keeps going.
