Re the variable location tiles: we have used them only once but I'm still not sure if the game needs them especially. In particular the set that matches what is printed on the board seems unnecessary as the nomads come out in a random order so it's near impossible to plan ahead from the very beginning of the game where players want to be on the board and what resources they'll need. Did you find that they change up the game significantly?
I read on BBG someone that agrees with you entirely. We enjoyed the variable location tiles as the trade possibilities change significantly and the distance between certain goods also expanded. I think the variability lies in this essentially - I'd give it a couple more go's with the tiles and I think the reason they are in the box (and there are a BUNCH!) will be made more evident. That said, it doesn't change the game-play, just some strategies. However, unless I'm playing with new players, I would always use them.
