One of their very best for sure! Blew me away completely the first 200 times I heard it 😜. O Holy Night, Amazing Grace and The Prayer are all up there, too, for me.
Kevin is a classically trained cellist and saxophone player, Matt plays the drums and Scott and Mitch play the piano, they’re a group of talented musicians! They’re quite a few videos where you can see them playing their instruments like dance of the sugar plum fairy Reimagined, Kevin’s fifth
Kevin is also a classically trained pianist , his family saw a precocious talent for music when he was a toddler and he started piano lessons aged 4 , cello aged 6 and saxophone aged 10 .
Welcome back ! Pentatonix got their start on an a capella competition show, and for a while afterwards stuck closely to the a capella "rules". But then they started experimenting more with instruments, electronic sounds and vocal editing, and adding extra layers of vocals, so they could get the sound they were looking for, particularly for some tracks on their Christmas albums and on their second originals album. When I first saw this video it was obvious that although it's recorded live, there are some extra layers of strings that Kevin is not playing live. He may have some string licks sequenced on his cello or in the looping box, or they may be using a pre-recorded track.
The extra cello sounds were pre-recorded by Kevin with the loop peddles (as well as some additional beatboxing looped in at the end). It was performed and recorded live, and then post production touch ups. So its not a "live" sound, but they did perform it live for the video (as opposed to the usual industry standard of prerecorded vocals and lip-synching for the music video). Its an awesome result! Such a good track and video.
Nice to see you back checking out PTX once again. They have a fairly new one out a couple of weeks ago...Meet Me Next Christmas....and the movie that they have roles in as well as singing that song onstage. Plus thee should be a brand new piece dropping today ( Dec6)... a collab with Great Big World.
Scott is so exuberant, lol! I agree, I feel like they have generally been as close to perfection as it's possible to be from the beginning, and yet they still keep getting better! I am not sure I can ever say one song is my favorite, because there are so many, and in so many styles, so my favorite is usually whatever one I'm listening to, but if forced to list favorites, this would absolutely be right up at the top. There are a few that I consider musical master-classes at whatever they were at at the time, like this one, "Gold," "The Prayer" and several of their originals. Loved your reaction!
lol I love that you recognized the Michael Jackson spin! I caught that immediately the first time I watched. Like from the beginning of the movie Free Willy
Yes they just getting better and better. They are amazing. This is now their song. Kevin does cello-boxing, he named it cello-boxing. You are appreciated. Do their O Holy night by PTX We Pentaholics don't mind the pausing. 99 percent of reactors do that. Greetings from South Africa
Nice reaction, thank you! No need to apologize for pausing, but backing it up a few seconds before restarting helps to ensure nothing is missed in the flow of the song. Thanks again.
You should know that Kevin's cello is considered a member of the group, because Kevin was asked to join the group when they found a video of him cello boxing.

'prayers for this world' has this same sort of energy to me.

Great to see u again. Kevin plays the cello in Shallow, Say Something, Radioactive, Thank You, Pa pa Tou
Papaoutai, also Over The River and Perfect.
Kevin also plays the cello in their cover of Shallow
Yes and also and in the song Perfect.
The part was Scott and Kirstie in unison.
Enjoyed your reaction and attention to syncopation and other intricacies. Thank you ...
This is an amazing cover, I understand the feeling. Have you done O Holy Night yet? It’s as spectacular, but in a completely different way.
That’s from Kevin’s looper. You can see his pedal box right by his left foot.I

I'm not crazy! You saw MJ's energy right there too, right? 😊 Of course PTX is not far up there 🤟
