Lindsay looked lean here, I think 1998 was the best her movement was. And there was no sweeter sound that the ball coming off her racket - such a clubber!
For all her "clean hitting", Lindsay was a rather one-dimensional player. And she would sometimes struggle against players with more variety, as is also borne out by her score against Hingis. You would think that hard-hitting Davenport would have obliterated Hingis, but that wasn´t the case (12-10).
Yes Venus also has amazing ball striking. But I think the difference between the two is Lindsay looks like effortless power. She has perfect technique and timing... Venus strikes it just as well, but Venus looks human if you know what I mean... she puts in a ton of effort in ball striking.
@@mikefox3258 Yes, the difference with Davenport versus all the other big babe players was that it looked smoother and like much less effort. Power hitters like Seles, Kvitova and the Williams sisters looked like they were trying to murder the ball...the effort was very apparent. Pierce was maybe midway between the two extremes.
@@FlabbyTitmussKvitova actually has a more easy power in my opinion - definitely not huge brute force in her shots - this is the case for a lot of the Czech players. Take someone like Krejcikova today - smooth, langurous strokes but the ball zips off, compared to a Sabalenka who I don’t enjoy watching as much because it looks like she’s putting so much effort into serves and groundies. Then you’ve got Swiatek who is in another category - just very fast topspin swings for a heavy ball. In the previous eras Hantuchova was another one with easy power, and also Schnyder although her forehand was more loopy.
Lindsay simply dominated the rivalry minus a short period in 2000/2001. In 02 she missed most of the year with injuries. Then in 04 she picked up where she left off and beat Venus several times in a row again to regain the lead and ended up with a winning head to head vs Venus. The crazy part is there was no reason for this. Venus had the serve, athleticism, movement advantage and both were equally powerful. Simply put, Venus had an arrogance about her where she assumed that she would just win because she was more naturally gifted. Lindsay had better technique on the groundstrokes.
Lindsay Davenport dominated an inexperienced Venus between 1997-1999. Don't forget Venus played her first slam in 1997. Between 2000-2003, peak Venus dominated Davenport. Venus is the main reason why Davenport won just 3 slams. When Venus came back from injury in 2004, she was never the same especially outside grass, so Davenport dominated her between 2004-2005. But don't forget Venus won the 2005 Wimbledon finals. The difference in their head to head is just one. But I can confidently say peak Venus is better than Peak Davenport
Well you’re just simply wrong and clearly bias. You’re saying a short period when venus absolutely destroyed Lindsay from 2000-2003 there H2h went from 2-8 to even Lindsay was outclassed talent wise so if don’t try and paint Venus to be ignorant when it’s you that’s ignorant
I don't believe she had anything against Serena Williams, but she seemed to have a genuine rivalry with Venus Williams. (The same was true of Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati.)

It was during that period that Richard Williams regularly said some very unflattering things about Lindsay so her feelings toward the family were not great.
she was upset that Venus pretended the ball was out as she couldnt get it, and the umpire just agreed with her...Lindsey didnt even make a fuzz out of it...you do that to Serena, she'd be whining the entire game....
Lindsay deserved the win but I just love the way Venus gets low and knifes that backhand for a winner. The AO was more fun during the green court era.
Everything was more fun back then

What clean ball striking from both. This could've been the final
Que buena era Davenport! Esos partidos que jugó contra Venus realmente eran muy reñidos
Los golpes de Davenport eran los mejores: planos y limpios como pasaba los brazos, y la potencia que lograba increíble.
Lindsay gave Venus a cold handshake at the end.
Lindsay's groundstrokes were too powerful.
I wonder how Davenport managed to lose the SF to Martinez, baffling after such a performance here
I always wondered that as well. At some point, I do however remember Davenport saying that Martinez one was one of her least favorite players to play.

@@carterwilson4605Martinez mixed up her shots really well. Lindsay hated that. She also has a losing record vs Sanchez and Sabatini.
Vicious Venus versus Lethal Lindsay.
Anyone bangs on about Lindsay's clean ball hitting but I think it sounds as good off venue's racket. Both are amazing players

Davenport and Capriati just hit the ball so cleanly, right in the centre of the racquet. So did Hingis, but she only did off the backhand side

Happy Birthday to Lindsay on June 8 and Venus on June 17. It's the Faughtys now. =)
Lindsay can hit clean winners like no ones business
Here Venus wasn’t hitting to the player she was hitting away from it. Well for the first one and a half sets
No live lost between these two
Go Lindsay.

Lindsay is a little spoiled??
Never a hand up from venus when the ball clipped the net and she won the point. Typical.
And Lindsay always giving cold and disrespectful handshakes? Typical
