Hi I am from Turkey, curious about the knives. This is not from the black sea region, this is a traditional Yatağan style blade which is famous where the ottoman empires yeniçeri soldiers swords made and located on the south west side of Turkey. ''Laz'' means one of the races where lives north east side of Turkey totally opposit with ''Yatağan'' characteristic.
Yatağan is a Turkish sword. It is also claimed that it was inspired by ancient Greek swords. Over time, it was also loved and used in the Balkans. Yatağan swords with different appearances have emerged. It has become the national sword of the Turks, Greeks, Bulgarians, Arnuts, and Serbians. The Laz generally use Caucasian type swords and daggers. However, the Laz interpreted the Yatağan sword in their own way. It is accepted that they have the same origin as the Georgians or Caucasian people. Between 1184-1230, Trabzon was part of the Georgian kingdom. However, later the Greeks and then the Turks took this Trabzon. Some Greeks claim that the Laz are Hellenes. However, today the Laz see themselves as a part of the Turkish nation. In ancient times, many immigrants from Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia settled in this region. The Laz have developed their own identity. They are still skilled in weapon making and seamanship, very nervous and "practical intelligence", brave people. They also produce many politicians and soldiers. :)
Actually all the Laz aren't in Turkey. There is also a significant Laz population in Georgia and Armenia. So it wouldn't be right to claim that they consider themselves Turks. Their mixing with the Turks on the Turkish coast of the Black Sea may have fostered Turkish nationalism in them. On the other hand elders still speak their traditional Laz language. It is a common mistake to call Black Sea people "Laz". For a long time, Black Sea Turkishness and being Laz are intertwined. So a Black Sea Turk does not mind being called Laz and vice versa.
@@gimlitheringdestroyer I honestly didn't know there were Laz in different regions. This is good information.I partially agree with you. Maybe people looking from outside don't understand Turkey. For example, there are Turks, Greeks and Georgians(Acar) among my ancestors. I see myself as Turks. I feel like I belong to Anatolian and Balkan culture. I have Laz relatives, they are really nationalist and patriotic people. Actually, this is not about how others see us. It is not about them imposing their own historical understanding on us. It is about who we see ourselves as. I wish you a good day.
