Restoration of an Old SURVIVAL Knife from WW2

  • I felt there was something special about this old knife. But I couldn't imagine that under that thick rust layer was hiding a huge engraving on one side of the blade. Also discovering a handle made out of paper was shocking!
    I managed to restore the blade, straighten the tang and made a brand new handle out of leather rings. As a bonus I made a leather sheath for this knife. Quite simple one with clean lines. Hope you enjoyed this video!

    Hi there and thanks for the video.
    The knife looks like a traditional Finnish sheath knife, probably somewhere back from the 1950-s, if not from the 1940-s, I'd guess, the engraving on the blade is most probably from the maker's mark, but not absolutely necessary so.. Might as well have been added by the original owner.. The dry and smelly material from the brass ferrule is the so-called brimstone, which was (and still is, long as I know) used in the traditional Finnish knife-making..)

      @@FFD_Restorations If we draw conclusions based on the appearance of the bolster and the pattern on the bolster, it is most likely the Finnish "Puukko". At least, the pommel of the handle eloquently testifies in favor of Finnish origin. I am not at all familiar with the Yiddish language and culture, but the letters in the inscription are still more like Latin. Maybe it's Finnish?

    • @FFD_Restorations
      @FFD_Restorations  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, definitely has a "Puukko" shape to it but due to the lack of clear readable engraving it is hard to tell. Finnish knife maker would usually use birch bark to make a handle in layers and that is not the case here. I am not familiar that they used paper to stack handles in the past. I could be wrong though 😃

  • @raughboy188
    @raughboy188 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'll reveal something about the handle. Material that was used to make handle is called presstoff and it is a form of artificial leather used during world war 2 i think. Anyway good work as always. Also presstoff is as you found out made out of paper. Inscription could be in yiddish which suggests that the knife belonged to ashkenazim jew(Jews from poland and germany are ashkenazim jews whose mother language is called yiddish). If someone knows better be my guest.

    • @FFD_Restorations
      @FFD_Restorations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, that is amazing Nino, I didn't have any idea. That explains a lot! Thank you so much for this valuable feedback. They used this papierstoff because of scarcity of other materials or it was a trend back then?

    • @raughboy188
      @raughboy188 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was partialy scarcity of real leather. Another reason quite familliar to you is same as today, price of leather and back then leather was incredibly expensive so prestoff was used instead so you can call it the first form of artifical leather. Presstoff wasn't used back then because of the trend, it was used due to shortage of real leather because most of it went to armies so if there was a real leather avaliable you'd have to pay inexorbitant price to get it because there was so little avaliable to people.

    • @FFD_Restorations
      @FFD_Restorations  ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought that was the case. I know how hard was to combine materials back then, especially during the war. The military was priority for sure. Always amaze me how people become creative and innovative in those difficult times. Truly inspiring. Thanks for reply btw!

    • @DiabloOutdoors
      @DiabloOutdoors ปีที่แล้ว

    • @FFD_Restorations

      I used oxalix acid + tap water. Never mix anything with oxalic acid since it can be really dangerous! In general I recommend you avoid oxalic acid because if you are not careful it can be very harmful and dangerous. It doesn't damage steel as vinegarif you keep it for longer period of time.
