Great information here. Quick tip though start on the bolts that are hardest to access first. If you take the easy bolts out that leaves all the stress and clamping load/ weight left on the last bolt, which can make it more difficult to remove Specially if it’s difficult to access.

Thanks for posting your video. Went just like like you said on my '08 F150 4X4. The only thing I'd add is to wrap a little electrical tape around the bolt flange and the socket to hold things in place when trying to line up that top bolt. Took about 3 hours, including time to go get the new starter. Don't know why this stuff always happens in the winter. It' s 17 out side, but 50 in the garage. Thank heavens for insulated garages and ceramic heaters!

Just now, my '04 E-350 w/ the 5.4L wouldn't start in -20F weather at 4AM but my battery was good (literally less than 24 hours old, so I knew that wasn't the issue). Figured I needed to bang on the lower starter solenoid. I used your video to help me locate it quickly (I really didn't feel like browsing around very long in -20F!). Thanks man. Started right up.

it's almost like they design these newer vehicles so that you can't work on them at the house. this never happens when I work on my 78 f150 4x4.

The 4x4 model is a little more fun with space restrictions but almost as easy. That top bolt is the tricky part, having the right length extension is key.

I didn't know the history of my vehicle so I wanted to replace the brushes ( being an aircraft mechanic ) , however I just could not get the upper bolt and saw that the starter had blue putty on the bolts so thought it wasn't worth pain and aggravation
to check the brushes for that third bolt. I don't have a lift to make it easier to move around under the expedition, enjoyed the
    video dude, thanks anyways.

It's been the outer wire which the end rotted away. The shop where my truck was at, wanted to keep it & do more research on my vehicle. They soaked me for a Alternator, a Battery & they would have replaced the Starter but it started when I was there so I took the truck as in & said I'd come back the following week when I had more money. They were a good place to go but once the guy who I think sold it to the partner, they are just ripping people off. To think it was doing the same thing $450.00 ago.

I'm working on mine now, and for the life of me could feel or see the top bolt. So I took the other two off and guess what? Whoever owned it before me didn't install it back in there I think. I wouldn't think it would have backed itself out.

Car companies. New Engineering standard=All engineers have to work on 10 yr old vehicles. Replace starter, intake manifold, spark plug and coil change before they design, engineer another vehicle.

Is that a 2004 Heritage or the 2004 new body, on mine I cant even find the top (third Bolt) much less dropping the starter? I think Ford made the 2004 F150 so you would have to pull the motor to replace the starter! And my luck after all this it will be the flywheel .

Is the top bolt facing the same way as the other two? I stuck my phone up there to take a pic and it either broke off, or it's the end of the bolt with the head on the other side. I've put about 3 hours into it yesterday

also make sure ur two ground wires 1 at and behind hood latch inside the truck and on pass side by fuse box. relocate the grounds higher up on the body, due to rust. must take plastic covers off to access the grounds

bSlimC Maybe just jammed in there, tap it, hit it with a hammer...Look at new starter, or a picture somewhere and make sure it just has 3 bolts, though I do not think I have ever seen 4 bolt starter, come to think about it, likely not.

I'm having serious issues removing the top two bolts. My problem is the 13mm sockets have too thick of a sidewall. They will not seat properly on the bolt head and it caused me to strip them. It looks like I'll have to remove the engine and transmission just to take off two stupid bolts

Tim Roberts at about the 2:15 mark I show you the setup, ratchet and a swivel and about a 4 inch extension. I think I reached up with my hand and put the socket and extension setup on the bolt an then reached up and attached the ratchet to the extension setup. best of luck

They are all 13mm head bolts, and I am working on 1 right now, already got it out, but, tryin to get the lil b*stard back in, and I am noticing, the 3 bolts are subtly different, where 2 are same length, 1 of those, has a stud on the end, and goes on bottom, while the other is a flanged bolt, and the 3rd bolt seems to be a bit shorter then that flanged bolt, so, try to remember where each bolt comes out of, I didn't pay much attention to it, and now, I have the longer bolt in wrong hole, gonna have to put it in the furthest hole out(The bolt hole, that is NOT hidden up near the engine block.), that bolt hole has a "bottom" to it, the threads are seeming fine, but, once it reaches so far, it acts as if it bottoms out, so, beware of this lil issue, that I ran into, as well. This is 1 of the reasons, why I always liked the Chevy's a bit more, since, you could easily get to the bolts, and much simpler way of mounting it. BTW, the truck I am working on, is not my own, I am getting paid to do it, since I have done countless older versions, and had to swap engines, and they are not easy, I promise you this, especially if you are workin with original bolts, studs & nuts, for some reason, they love to rust-out(If you live in a state, like I do, where it rains and snows a lot!), and to help keep them from doing so, I bought some stainless steel nuts for the exhaust manifolds, and intake manifold, as well, plus a few extras. So, if you plan on keeping your truck, I suggest getting the flame proof black paint, and just giving the exhaust manifolds a quick coat or two, and also use the anti-seize lube(I tend to use the silvery stuff, that they use either lead(The older compound, that they used to make.) or aluminum to make it, where the goldish colored stuff is mainly copper powder. Both will work just fine.), so that your bolts don't seize up again, same with nuts, obviously. Not just around the exhaust, pretty much anywhere, where it is mainly steel/stainless steel bolting into cast iron, so it gives a super thin barrier, and it doesn't have to take the WD-40 or PB Blaster, to get them back off. Sorry for being a bit long, but, I guarantee, this will definitely help in the future!
