- How to / Tutorial: Reverse Turning Kick AKA Spinning Hook Kick (반대돌려차기. 後ろ回し蹴り)
In this video Carl van Roon looks at key considerations for the effective execution of the Taekwon-Do reverse turning kick. This tutorial covers how the Sport Science concept of the 'kinetic chain' can make this kick more efficient, fast and powerful from a bio-mechanical point of view. The latter half of the video briefly explores how to apply these principles for jumping and 540 hook versions of this kick and furthermore, how to train the technique for Taekwon-Do versus MMA (where it is being utilised more commonly now), including a brief discussion of points to consider how to adapt this kick for delivery from a more conventional Kickboxing / MMA fighting stance.

Thanks van roon for all tutorials you are great martial art!
The way you articulate each detail is really helpful. I have learned so much in 12 minutes!
This is a brilliant lesson, so helpful and makes total sense especially if you’ve studied dance and / or gymnastics as well, exactly the same sport science techniques applied to the arts.
Great explaination. Best one i’ve heard so far! Thank you
Both these gentlemen GNT and Van Roon are so humble and sincere in their approach. It's an honour to watch both of you. Thanks for the videos. Lots of respect for you.

Best explanation I have seen, awesome - thanks!
Awesome tutorial. I've subscribed because of the amount of technical detail you provide.
amazing kicks, great tutorial
Your lesson on the reverse turning kick was exact and profound. Before viewing I knew nothing of my kinetic chain or the inverted chamber. Now my kick is relaxed and natural. You have my gratitude.
Great lesson, thank you Sir! When you have time, PLEASE make more videos teaching all different kicks, blocks and more techniques!
I have rarely seen such good explanation. Thank you Sir.
The best explanation I had ever seen. Well done!
Thank you very much - glad you liked it
Excellent tutorial! Big fan of yours already. Great that you bring in the sports science and everything is very clearly explained and demonstrated.
Thank you for tuning in! :D
Very neat explanations, really. The video covers up a lot of details if this technique that a lot of the times even coaches in gyms never cover. Kudos!
jesus man ur balance and flexibility is insane
Wow. The doubleturn is magical. Looks even in slowmotion impossible.
Thanks a lot for this explanation!!! Very very helpful ❤
I watched quite a few tutorials on this spinning back kick.
This is the best by far.
Thanks Carl
Thank you very much!
Great video. The way you break down the steps is fantastic! Thanks for making this video.
You're welcome
Mate these tutorials are brilliant ! Thanks
This is the kind of instruction that is so useful. I'm glad I found your channel.
This is my dancing moves that won me several prizes over the years. Joking.... but dang this is awesome video. My favorite kicks
The best instruction for a spin kick ever.
James Durham thank you 🙏
Amazing tutorial. Competed recently in the BTC championships, came up against a guy who was a brawler with not much technique, but his sheer power won the bout. Though I got a good head hit with a front hook kick, I think I would have won overall if I successfully completed a reverse turning kick to the head. Going to practice this over and over. Thanks again!
Excellent instruction. Mechanical applications are spot on. I will be using the setup to implement this kick into my sparring
Thank you so much. By far the best tutorial re. this kick that I've found... The ability to teach is a gift, and you have it. Sincerely, G
Thank you for your lovely and sincere comment
wow, solid kick! Thanks for sharing this.
Gotta add this to my karate routine training.
I am following you now. Oss!
I Love this kick, the amount of torque you can get. Like the break down as well.
While I didn't suffer from bad instruction when I studied Tae Kwon Do, I would have certainly enjoyed learning under you. Magnificent techniques that are clearly geared to fighting in the ring or in a street encounter. Excellent video, Sir. Thanks for sharing it.
Very good tutorial. You broke it down very well. This is one of my favorite kicks and your video helped me. Thanks.
Tawfiq Bey you’re welcome
Great tutorial! Love this. Thank you so much for this.
You're welcome!
ABSOLUTE BEST TUTORIAL ON Y/T! THANKS.

Nice video. Very helpful. Thank You for your share.
I met Steven about 10 yrs ago and he was so talented and humble. Its just awesome to see he is still the same. Great Bloke !!
Good stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing where this channel goes. Your explanations are top notch.
Thank you so much - just saw this!
Great! Awesome tutorial bro 💪🏽👏🏽👍🏽👌🏽😊☺️
One of the absolute most informative and thoughtful ways of presenting this kick. I've studied for 15 years be between an ITF and WTF school, and have not heard or seen this fairly complicated kick presented so well (GNT was good but I found this way of presenting more thoughtful, for those that want to understand their martial arts as much as just kicking). I'm not happy with my current technique and now I know what to work on. Thanks again! I'm really looking forward to more of your training videos!
Thank you very much Mr Horton for your feedback, I'd like to wish you the very best for you training! Thank you for supporting our new VRMA channel!
Thanx for your tutorials. When I understand the physiology behind the kicks I can use the techniques more effectively and accurately. Great job!
You're most welcome Katja!
thanks brother!really love this video🙏
Truly brilliant video, thank you!
Excellent tutorial... I love the way he uses the kinetics of the movement to explain how to get maximum impact and benefit... Awesome!
As someone who spent most of their life just brawling, I was always very solid on my feet and at most moved off-line to get closer. Now that I've been practicing TKD, I'm learning just how much of a role movement and kinetic energy can play.
First one I've watched of yours my man, I really enjoyed they way you teach. Very patient, clear and precise! Thank you
Thank you :D
Wow! it is incredible how you explained everything, it is simply amazing how science is applied straight into your training, great video!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it :D
Great kicks and excellent presentation.

Your kicks are amazing!
Fantastico!veramente un concetto corretto,grazie dall'italia🥋👊👌
Wow! Very nice spinning, turning kick.
Nice,, I have search this type of turning kick videos since long time.. 👌
Thank you sir, this helped me a ton.
Pure brilliance to impact a jab or punch before attempting a head kick. Respect.
Ohhhhh! I get it now. The whole thing about bringing your arms and leg in to create spin because you're closer to your axis. I never thought about it like that. I have never been able to get the spin in any move, but you have just made this all click. Years training and now I finally get it from watching this video. Now I'm like, why has no-one just explained it with that bit of science before? Honestly, best tutorial ever. Thank you so much.
Thanks Natasha. Glad I can help 🙏
Thank you VR... You are amazing !!
beautiful technique
Great video sir❤
Great lesson!!! I've been practicing TKD for about a week, now, and I'm getting a lot more comfortable with pivoting and spinning; this is a great one to throw into my drills, but I'm gonna need more room to practice this than I currently have - I've been training in my bedroom, and I just kicked my guitar case XD Might have to move to the living room or make dojo down in the basement.
Wow! I saw many good kicks of that kind, really, but yours are one of the powefulliest I ve ever seen! And also clear, lets say. I m sure that I will never become so good! Not even close! Thanks for sharing with us!
