Nah he embodies the truth, "we live in a society" "why do we need to bring drinks or food if we're invited?".. but the double dipping I wouldn't side with.. however george definitely is real as F
I back George on wanting compensation for his car. Yes, the hospital should pay. It was their multiple security failures that led to a man in a psych ward accessing a means of suicide.
When this show began, I didn't care for it; all the characters were awful. Then, it dawned on me that these weren't meant to represent 'nice' people. And, of four; George became my favorite sit-com 'bad-guy'. (Kramer simply got on my nerves, and stayed there.) George's schemes never worked out well - until he decided to do the opposite of every inclination had, which was brilliant writing. I agree, too, that the character would not have been nearly as good, had not Jason Alexander played him, so well. I think you picked a terrific character to discuss in this context, and you made good points as to why. Good to see you again. :)
I never liked Kramer, either. Even as a kid, I couldn’t understand why fans seemed to love him so much😭 My mom & I always liked George best, he was so shamelessly shameless lol
When it was on the air, I disliked George so much but as time passed and I've gotten older (and bitterer) George/Larry David has grown on me so much that I have come to like him more than the other characters. It also helps that Jason Alexander is such an amazing actor for the role.
i told my best friend just last week that i'm the real life larry david because everyone hates me for my bitterness, authenticity, disability, weaknesses, honesty, transparency, etc, curb your enthusiasm could be a documentary of "my" life
One interesting thing that occurs to me about Seinfeld that I had never thought of before is how unique the approach was in terms of which cast members assumed comedic responsibilities. Putting Kramer aside for a second, the two trained comedians (Jerry & Julia) played straight man roles, while the theater actor (Jason) handled most of the comedy. Obviously Michael Richards is a comedian, but when episodes centered around Kramer, it was usually the secondary character (Newman, Soup Nazi, Frank Costanza etc) providing the comedy and Kramer became the straight man. There are always some exceptions to this of course, but in general it's wild to have a show about a comedian and have that comedian be the least funny person on the show.
I'm guessing you aren't in the NYC area. Unfortunately, many of the people in and around this area are narcissistic, shameless, petty, snarky, money-grubbing, myopic, bitter, conniving, egomaniacal trash people. Of course, you can't bucket everyone in the NYC area into those classifications - but as someone who has lived my whole life near "The City" (Side note: arrogant much? There ARE other cities, you know) - and also, as someone who has travelled all over the US and the world... NYC is a cesspool that both smells like and acts like total piss and garbage pretty much all of the time.
Only chandler and Joey were marginally decent people. Now it’s fine having main characters who are terrible people, just look at Seinfeld. But while Seinfeld leans into that for the comedy and is self aware friends has terrible characters AND tries to act like they are decent people. It also doesn’t help that the friends characters have utterly unrealistic and unrelatable problems whereas you can at least understand Seinfeld’s characters frustrations no matter how ridiculous they are.
I’ve always loved George (aka Duckman)as a character, but I’ve never been able to decide who I like more, him or Kramer. Kramer is an utter genius of a character that is simply not of this earth. And Elaine is also a sublime side-splitter. The Seinfeld crew to me are simply unbeatable and will never be surpassed, although the gang at Parks and Recreation put up a very good show. Ps, I love your critique and to me your delivery makes be chuckle in a very good way.
Dude so great seeing a new drop from you! And am annoyed at how underrated it is. I had never considered it before, but your point about George being the ‘best’ marriage between depravity & grounded performance really hits home. It’s a high-wire act to reconcile those things, and I’m now inspired rewatch all of Seinfeld. I just need to clear like 8 months of my life first haha
George Costanza is the best. My favourite tv character of all time with Homer Simpson as the runner up. It’s criminal that Jason never got an Emmy for his portrayal. Then again, it’s only an Emmy lol
@@collegerebel When he claims to have designed the new addition to the Guggenheim and proceeds to add "and it really didn't take very long either" 🤣 🤣🤣 That's one of my favorite George Costanza quotes. For someone who always wanted to pretend to be an architect, George is very bad at it.
Exceptional analysis! Just like Jason Alexander your abilities continue to soar👏I absolutely agree! George’s relatability as a neurotic every person gives me a satisfying sense of fulfillment that I’m not alone while reminding viewers, as you pointed out, the perils of letting emotions explode to extremes. I’m reminded of similar disagreeably natured characters like Archie Bunker & Eric Cartman who resonate with fans in spite of the character’s flaws. Glad You’re Back Sir! The Legion’s Ready On Your Command!🫡
This was a unique show in that the actual "comedian" Jerry Seinfeld was effectively the "straight man" in the show. And it just shows just how super aware Jerry (and Larry David) were in that it was all about the laughs, and it didn't matter who got the laughs -- so Jerry surrounded himself with brilliant performers. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is Lucille Ball-level as an elite female TV comedic actor. Top of the tree. Michael Richards' physical comedy is up there with Keaton, Chaplin, Jacques Tati, Oliver Hardy and Harpo Marx, Jerry Lewis... all the greats of the 20th Century, in my opinion. And then there's the extended cast of Newman, Peterman, the Seinfeld and Costanza parents, Mr Pitt, Puddy, Banya, Uncle Leo, the Soup Nazi, Babu... etc etc.. But George as a character is just so layered. And Jason Alexander's skill to bring him to life is unmatched. And to think that he never got an Emmy is criminal, really.
George is great, the cast, the writing and the whole show were amazing, but my favorite sitcom character will always be Barney Fife. Don Knotts was the man.
George is the greatest sitcom character ever created. Only other character that even comes close is Larry David in Curb and Dennis Reynolds in It’s Always Sunny.
George is equal parts ego and insecurity. It's the ever-present and continuing struggle between the two that make him so entertaining. Larry supplied the basic ingredients and Jason whipped up a masterpiece.
George Costanza is like the Joker. A lot of people love him but they kinda miss the point. No one should want to be George Costanza, and if you relate to him, that’s a shame. But it’s perfectly fine to admire the way Jason Alexander portrays this character. The other thing is, there are a lot of George’s in the world and everyone knows one. He reminds of several people I’ve met in my lifetime. I love George Costanza. But I also think it’s very important to recognize that Seinfeld was an ensemble cast, a George Costanza doesn’t work without people around to react to him. If Jerry wasn’t around to tell him how ridiculous he is, or Elaine didn’t give him shit all the time it wouldn’t be nearly as funny.
George is as the term online goes Covert Narcissist....no one would want to know a person like that in real life, but on screen is so funny....people sah exaggerated, that's exactly what disorder is, we relate but then when it gets exaggerated or real disorder we disengage... but there are people like George out there and that's not an exaggeration
'The Marine Biologist" is the episode that really got me into the show, and a few years ago when hoping to hit on a woman at a union event and telling a friend of mine that I hoped to do so, I found myself invoking George saying, "If you mess this up in any way, I can't be you're friend anymore. I'm serious. If you do as some sick little game, we're finished!" A bit of a paraphrase to fit the context, but as soon as I started, I knew I had to go to the inner George to express myself.
I like sitcoms that know they are sitcoms. That's one of the reasons why I like Seinfeld so much. I don't know why the more serious a sitcom is and has an increased number of serious moments in them, they are considered better "sitcoms". I mean that's fine if that's what one is looking for. But that doesn't make them better "sitcoms" to me. They're something different. They need a different category for them.
You’re missing the point on George. Diagnosing and evaluating George is like evaluating family guy dad. They are not meant as characters describing one person, but they are a mirror to the whole society. George is a parody of all of us.
Jason Alexander played George Costanza and provided the voice for Duckman. Both characters were very consistent in their bad behavior. Much like Daffy Duck these characters were funny and likeable because of their failings and their failures. Aside from opposite George things never went their way.
The closest sitcom character to George Costanza was Dr. Zachary Smith from Lost In Space. The only difference between the two of them was a laugh track.
He has pretty much all the traits of the vulnerable narcissist. Most of us have these traits, are they are part being human, but we also care about others enough so that it's not pervasive. George cares about no one, as all four characters don't. They're all out for themselves. Jerry and Elaine are both assholes, the perfect superior specimens, above everyone else, while Kramer is a lighter version of them.
I'm very much like George. It's the absurdities around George that enables him to be so funny. Now I'm not that funny because I usually just walk away instead of staying and let my emotions escalate the situation.
Seinfeld is my favorite sitcom and George may be my favorite sitcom character of all time. He's definitely one of the greatest in the history of the genre.
I don’t think George is remotely unlikeable. They do selfish things but it’s never taken too far. And it is a lot more believable than say Michael Scott, which while I like him, it’s a little big as far as comedy goes. His character feels unrealistic while George feels authentic, especially when you see his parents.
what about when george tells of his saving of the whale. brilliant and masterful, or a george divided against himself cannot stand. george and jason alexander was totally off the hook and sheer comic genius.
without george, seinfeld as we know it, would not exist. the show would not have made it without george. also susan should of been cast a an add on character and not written off the show. she fit right in to the seinfeld group. Seinfeld lacked another female actress regular, and susan would of added to the shows comedy.
I just love George. He embodies the selfish, weak, petty, and negative parts of all of us in such a hilarious way
The episode where he gets Elaine to take an IQ test for him is hilarious to me for some reason 😂
George has the best life hacks, like eating an apple makes you seem aloof or looking annoyed makes people think you're busy
Looking annoyed is my fav 😂
Nah he embodies the truth, "we live in a society" "why do we need to bring drinks or food if we're invited?".. but the double dipping I wouldn't side with.. however george definitely is real as F

Georges are georgeous?
With whom you fall in love!!! Never end a sentence with a preposition!!!! 🤦♂️
I agree
I like when he seeks his own form of justice, like stealing from the store after the cashier shorted him.
"Seventy-five bucks?! I'm not paying that. I'll give her $35."
"You've got to pay what they say!"
"No, I pay what I say!"
I back George on wanting compensation for his car. Yes, the hospital should pay. It was their multiple security failures that led to a man in a psych ward accessing a means of suicide.
"I'm not attracted to assholes", yet... I wonder where I've seen this before.
