    Your enthusiasm and work more than make up for video and audio. I'm not here for glitzy production values. If I was sat beside you in the boat I wouldn't always be able to see or hear clearly and that's what this feels like; you talking to me.

    No worries mate, the quality is excellent now. I don't know where I'd start if I was making videos, except a camera. I really appreciate your meticulous approach working with a partially rotten boat. It starts out in a mess and ends up like a watch repair. You've got a lot of patience and determination combined with wood working skills and craftsmanship. It's a joy to watch. Thank you for showing us. Great job. 👍😎🍺

    When in preparing timber for ribs I tend to use green logs and prior to sawing I split the log so the grain orientation is predetermined prior to selecting the saw angle and orientation to the log this is to achieve select 1/4sawn timber I then dress these to required size allowing for shrinkage secure slip blocks to existing ribs steam the ribs and drive the new rib down and in from the top and then use small wedges to finish the ribs shaping , after cooling and setting the slipper blocks are removed and ribs fastened into final position this system allowed the fitting of 60 ribs in one day with only 3persons and a further 2days to fasten with 2persons ,in Australia my preference for rib material is spotted or blue gum of over 50 years growth , well done keep it up I enjoy watching your journey cheers brian

    Tree roots for knees, often overlooked.
    For those confused the thick pieces of timber going down the sides are frames. The ribs, also called intermediate frames, are smaller and tend to crack for three reasons. First they are dry but under tension and get whacked when cold it shatters them. Too dry and instead of shrinking they crack. Finally someone puts a support there again when dry. If soaked with linseed oil non boiled, they tend to stay supple and lose tension over years.
    The rabbit, rabbet or rebate, is cut into the stern post and keel/keelson so that planking stock sits in almost with a 90 degree edge but follows the shape of the frames. Note between stern and keel is usually a stop water( dowel hammered in to swell up)in rabbet or close too. The stern is bolted to the keel via the stern knee also called foreknee. There also should have been some floors between the stern and the interior planks I forgot name of.
    Floors are piece of wood or metal that join three things, frame to frame on opposite side and keel. They also connect to deck beamshelf and stern as well as middle beam shelf and stern..same in bow. Note stern is rear now is front.
    Older fishing boats tended to have lots of oil from fish so areas tended to get well oiled.

    Just a note on paint inside the hull.

    You'd be doing yourself a huge favour by investing in a bandsaw. You need something 14" or over to get a machine big enough to tension a reasonable blade for ripping oak, but they're on Ebay every week for just a few hundred pounds. Trying to rip nicely with a hand held circular saw and the wood in a vise is just making any easy job difficult.
    Anyway, keep up the good work. (Oh, and those things you were kneeling on are not knees, they're floors).

    • @BothanboatsIdler

    • @MikeAG333
      @MikeAG333 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BothanboatsIdler I'd certainly point you towards a bandsaw rather than a tablesaw. For boatbuilding, where you've curved work to do later on, the bandsaw will be infinitely more useful (and it's a much safer tool, too). It will rip really cleanly with the correct blade.

      Hey Ken, a frame in this case is a station frame, which are the larger sawn “ribs”. The lighter built steamed ribs dont function as a frame to hold the shape of the boat but more to stabilise and strengthen the planking. Frames have more of a structural role.
