Its quite incredible how much enemy variety was in mario bros ds and most of them never saw the light of day again. Pumpkin goombas and balloon boos give ghost houses the variety they desperately needed.

It’s really sad to see that some of the ds enemies have been basically scrapped from future games. Almost every single enemy is unique and is really cool.
At least 30% of them appeared in Paper Mario: The Origami King
Also, Mario on the Ds was a major setback of memories for me.

I swear that Balloon Boo, Broozer, Unagi, Mega Unagi and Spike Bass scared me a hell of a lot when I first played NSMB as a kid
Aacro X Spike Bass and Balloon Boo made me get so scared I would quickly shut my DS and I wouldn't go back to it for half an hour
Lol I didn’t go that far, but after I beat 4-3, 4-GH and 8-3 I never went back to those levels in a big while

久々の2D完全新作でしたから、気合い入れたんでしょうね。
Chain chomp was really underused in New Super Mario Bros U in my opinion, and I feel like enemies that you said were underused like the cooligan, the crab, the stalking piranha plants and the wrench thing aren’t underused, they’re just restricted to certain levels/worlds. Like the cooligan is only really found on the ice world/levels and the same thing applies to the crab except it’s the water world and enemies like the wrench thing are restricted to airship levels, the broozer being restricted to ghost house levels, the bulber being restricted to mostly underground water levels and the stalking piranha plants with the jungle world/levels, the scuttlebug and the Bramball applies to that as well. The King Bill can only really be put into levels where it has the room to be in, like open area levels as you can’t put it in a level like an acorn plains level as it’ll destroy the actual environment, and then there are the sort of special enemies where they only appear in a few levels like one or two where the level is fit for them, like the Dragoneel appearing in the Dragoneel Den and the spike ball things that I forgot the name of appearing in the castle where there is a spawner for them.

Nabbit really should be used more in spinoff games. If they didn’t add piranha plant to smash he should be added with a moveset based on the nsmb series where he could utilize things like baby yoshis. Also I want him to be in Mario kart and tennis aces bc he was already in the 3ds golf

By "underused" you mean that they are underused in the games they appear or are underused overall in the entire NSMB series? Cause if it's the first variant then i can agree. For example, even though Boomerang Bro and Broozer appeared in multiple games, they are used in very few levels (I remember Broozer appearing in 2 or 3 levels in the entirety of NSMB DS)
I just felt to share this after seeing the comments with "(enemy name) is not underused"

It actually means underused because these enemies only appear in very few levels
Urchins are certainly not underused, not just in NSMB but the Mario games in general.
I think it's a combination of both.
The amount of levels they are in means they are underused. Boomerang bros and bronzers only appeared in a few levels in the games they where in. Sometimes they only appear in two or one level. They are fairly rare enemies

You got the concept a bit wrong. First, Broozers are in nsmb Ds, the Wii, and in the Wii U version. I wouldn’t call that underused. And boomerang bro is definitely not an underused character, he was in basically every 2d side scrolling Mario game. Same with ice bro, except the ds and 3ds Version. And Nabbit isn’t quite underused anymore. He was in Mario Bros u and Luigi u. And next year he will be in nsmbu deluxe and the Luigi u with it, so he’s not underused. Other than that good video
Broozers only appear in one level per game and boomerang bro are even rare in SMB3.
Also Nabbit is playable in Mario Golf for 3DS too
