Why You Want a Polycarbonate Windshield

  • Why did we replace the glass windshield in our race car with a polycarbonate one from Shields Windshields? Sure, it saves weight, but that’s not the only advantage it offers. And, if polycarbonate windshields are so good, then why don’t they come on street cars from the factory, too?

Plaskolite is sold at Ace and is labeled virtually indestructible. I don’t know if it’s legal though

Great video and tutorial! Saving a considerable amount of weight up high in the vehicle is definitely a pro. How do those coated poly windshields hold up over time to abrasions or rocks/OPR from driving? Do they typically last a year or two at least with fairly normal racing use?

We've found them to be very durable--here's some more info on the coating with our 350Z project car: grassrootsmotorsports.com/project-cars/LS-Swapped-2003-Nissan-350z/replacing-glass-windshield-plastic-project-ls-powe/

Do they make the rear and side windows?

There's another reason, even if it only applies to less than 1% of people. You literally have to if you live in a place where it regularly gets so insanely cold that your window will frost up and you can't see. I'm talking well below zero. These people in particular that I watched on some show said most people swap them out every winter. I'd just leave it on year round, but they were acrylic or some cheap plastic though, wasn't anything fancy, just enough to get thru mother nature.
Just in case anyone was thinking of moving to Alaska with their classic car...

Are you considering adding 3M's clear protector sheets?

We shouldn't need to do this.

@@timsuddard6502 Everyone that I know are running the 3M window sheets to extend the life of the windows. Does this window have some special coating on it to harden it. A friend of mine ran one in a 911 and ran savannah and it was windy with the sand, and couldn't even polish out the damage and had to buy a new window

@@marklangren3142a wet sand and polish would fix that, would it not?
