5 things I learned and I feel like everyone should have the chance to experience:
    - an understanding for basic science i really take advantage of everyday in Med School
    - getting used to test situations and other stress situations I am dealing with all the time at university
    - I felt like discussions and debating in different situations (let it be a class or at lunch) taught me a lot for life and about other people
    - developing learning strategies, a sense for what's important to know and what isn't and also just improving learning skills and training your brain to filter and also remember things
    but most importantly:
    - interaction and social skills through dealing with nice and not so nice other kids
And I feel like that is of enormous meaning for your entire life, it really is all about interacting and understanding other people. A person who is good with people will get so much further in life in so many ways. Also learning to deal with people you don't naturally get along with is vital. Learning to deal with rejection or negative experiences and understanding and developing a way to process that is so much easier when you're still living at home with the support of your family and parents and not in a college dorm by yourself. So much easier than being let out in the big wide world all by yourself for the first time when starting college, not having made any of those experiences before.

Fortunately all of those experiences are available through homeschooling, along with being in the actual real world. I have never experienced another social situition with same-aged peers other than school, and at school the rule was usually"no talking." Public school was/is so homogenous. Maybe people assume homeschoolers stay home all the time???
Also, learning to love my siblings would have been the BEST way to learn how to get along with others. It's still a struggle. 😅

In school: I learned history which i indirectly use with how my political beliefs are formed, i learned basic biology that I use in medical school, I learned how to type very quickly without looking at the keys, i learned how to sing from sheet music (which is helpful for hymns etc), I also took a finance class that taught the basics on money management (subsidized vs unsubsidized loans, etc).

5 things I learned In an Australian high school between 13 and 17:
    1. Problem solving skills
    2. Conflict resolution skills
    3. Essay and report writing skills (critical for university)
    4. Legal studies - I learned about debating, the laws, the systems Australia is built upon etc. Which provides me with a bunch of understanding about A LOT.
    5. Biology - whilst at the time much of it seemed irrelevant, I built knowledge that helped me understand my body, how to take care of it, what it needs etc. And an understanding of illness, rest, medical treatments (to a baseline of course - I am not a doctor).
I could go on too! Australia does a great job in my opinion of making sure that what you learn is relevant. I’m now studying to be a teacher and the curriculum and how teachers are taught to teach us all about linking things to the real world and making things relevant! :)

I think the things that I learned in school that have impacted me the most now are honestly things that were elective.
    1. Marching band taught me discipline & accountability
    2. Music classes prepared me for studying music in college
    3. Travel & tourism & global studies courses prepared me for my job now that involves planning international travel
    4. Civil rights & leadership class taught me a lot about social justice and the importance of history
    5. Photography class taught me photoshop skills that I use in my job now

Honestly, I've tried the "list 5 things" and I couldn't even stop at 5 😅 sure I don't use the periodic table really, or some advanced maths stuff but these are not the most important things you can learn in school I believe. So here's my 5+1 list, but honestly, I could go on:
    1. How to socialize and to respect everyone's beliefs even if they don't align with yours
    2. My love for books and analizing texts
    3. The connection between historical actiond and nowaday actions
    4. How our society and countries are built and how they work
    5. How to follow a daily routine, how to study and work effectively
+1: English as a second language and the basics of every subject

    • @allthingsdisney5376
      @allthingsdisney5376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

All agreed. I'm a teacher. Watching my students debate fairly; get into an expected routine; learning the importance of respecting different races, ethnicities, culture, without thinking their race reigns supreme is beautiful. They love learning all of history, not a surface level history (we talk a lot t about the contributions made by Native Americans, not just Christopher Columbus.) Watching them resolve conflict on their own; participate in clubs; work hard on winning spelling bees, reading bowl, math challenges; while remembering that winning is not the most important thing. And I like that they see the good, bad, and ugly. They learn so much about what NOT to do when they see the ugly side, but it's important for them to see it. School is so much more than the classes that are often taught they may not apply to your individual career choice. The most important thing is raising a well-rounded child that can exist in a diverse world.

I am an emergency department/trauma nurse & I would not have made it here without the chemistry, biology, anatomy, math, and work ethic/study habits that I learned in high school. I definitely agree that not everybody needs to go to college; trades are awesome! But your child might not know what they want to do by highschool, so maybe having the classes needed to expand their options is good. Just some thoughts, but I understand your perspective:)

I took a class in high school that taught me how to completely run a business . The class prepared me to follow a career in finance. Also I wanted to let Nate know that engineers and architects need algebra and calculus. I agree that we don’t always learn things that will follow us in life. I believe it is important to learn how your child learns and their strong suits to expand on it and play to their strengths.

I was homeschooled from grade 2-12. It was the best experience ever! Though I'll emphasise that my sisters and I did a lot of academic studying (Maths, English, Science, History...etc). We all went to universities after so our parents wanted to set us up to have very high academic standards and education to go anywhere with our careers in the future. But we also got to do heaps of other things that school kids don't do heaps or none of (classes in sewing/dressmaking, embroidery, knitting/crotchet and cooking, a tone of music, home economics,...etc) because there is so much less waist of time when you homeschool (no travel, no waiting in class until everyone gets the concept, no bullying nonsense...etc,) you get to do heaps of of other things because there is time for it :) and above all we got to learn from godly examples and soak ourselves in God's word everyday in a way that one can't get in any school even if it's a Christian school.

The part that I did enjoy from public school is just being around all types of kids, learning new cultures, ideas, social interaction. The educational part that I use every single day is everything I learned in the areas of math, geometry, English, Extra curricular activities, student council, debate, art clubs and just the accomplishment of finishing high school with my friends. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Yes. 5 things 1) how to type, 2) use the Dewey decimal library system, 3) participating in teams, working with others, 4) history of slavery and the United states. Yes because I use this and the process of evaluating what history says, a ton of times, if not everyday, at least once a week. 5) the value of staying in touch with friends through the years. If not only at school but the value.

I'm an Environmental Consultant by profession and Chemical Engineer by training and I'm so thankful for the sciences. Whilst I rarely (read never) apply algebra and most scientific principles in my day to day work since I use a lot of programming tools, I am so thankful to know the foundational aspects of the subjects and I would not have been able to pursue an Engineering degree without being equiped with knowledge from these subjects. Another subject I'm particularly thankful for is Biology. My parents were mostly avoidant when it came to subjects around sex and reproduction so learning it in school without undertones of shame and Taboo really helped me understand the mechanisms of my body. I think education has multiple facets of application, whilst you apply some aspects of education directly into your everyday life, other aspects are meant to invoke curiosity or train you in critical thinking. I am not against homeschooling, just really appreciate education in general.

I wouldn't trade my schooling for anything. No, I don't use all the academics taught, but man did I learn diversity; coping skills with those outside of my family; culture, and the importance of learning how and why people think the way they do. I loved the field trips with friends, and some of those friends felt like family. I loved history and basic science. I loved learning that I wasn't the center of everything; I had to respect authority. I loved my parents, but I wouldn't have been interested in being taught by them. Plus, my mom did teach me necessities for life. I graduated knowing how to balance a checkbook, cook a meal, wash my own laundry etc. School is so much more than algebra, chemistry etc.

    1. We learned how to tell if a number is divisible by a number. So, I know that 1102032 is evenly divisible by 9 without checking. 2. The constitution test I took in 8th grade has been useful lately. 3. I learned how to check the BOLS for the projection of the job outlook. 4. I learned how to make a job resume in high school. 5. I learned that I am capable of doing great things. 6. I learned how to work hard.

  • @DannyD-lr5yg

Five things I learned from early school through end of high school:
(For context, I started in public elementary, then was homeschooled for grades 4-7, then private Christian high school for grades 8-12)
    1. My Christian high school was setup like a university. In 10th-12th, we took a 3 hr/wk “worldview” class. My senior year, the professor - double PhD, former presidential speech writer - took us through the entire history of modern philosophy. Like, that was the class. 9h/week, for an entire year. That class - and more importantly, that professor - taught my how to be curious, how to think critically, how to ask questions, how to be aware, and how to reason.
    2. My algebra teacher always said “go back to what you know!” I don’t use that for algebra lol, but, that idea stuck with me and I still remind myself!
    3. Another teacher told us “sometimes, your homework doesn’t get done.” That idea that it is OKAY to prioritize, even if that means not being perfect, or cutting things that’re seen as “must-do’s,” if those things are not helping you grow closer to your goals.
    4. My biology teacher taught us we’re “all just big bags o’ chemicals.” It bothered me a lot at the time, and also confused me, as she was a Christian teacher who taught creationism etc. Now that I’m 30, I’m finally beginning to realize how right she is. And more importantly, that that’s not at odds with belief in God - God _made_ these “bags of chemicals,” and actually acknowledging the effect chemicals have on us empowers us to be mindful of things like how nutrition, vitamins, exercise, necessary medications, etc affect our daily functioning.
    5. When I was homeschooled during the end of elementary thru middle school, I learned how to be successful at tedious tasks - for ME, personally. How? Gotta get up bright and very early, before anyone else is up, and then I can do those tasks. That’s it. Do I do that nowadays? Nope lol; but I’m a work in progress, especially as I’ve learned more about ADHD neuroscience etc. But FOURTH grade me got to be a pro at waking up at 6:45 to do my math homework at the dark kitchen table lol. Now to just get to that place again 😆

Thank you for sharing. Since the covid situation, we too have decided to not vaccinate our babies. My 3 year old has had all vaccines up to date, but my 7 month old hasn't had any for the exact same reasons. I heard someone say something that comforted us in our decision making as we were feeling the pressure as the appointment was drawing close and we were undecided on what to do "You can always decide to vaccinate at any age, but you can't take something out that has already been put in". So yes, our decisions may change in the future, but for the moment, we are quite content in our decision. Candace Owens is currently releasing episodes on her podcast called "A Shot in the darK" which is revealing many truths about vaccines that we as parents are just so unaware of.
It's definitely a scary time, but we have faith that we serve a God that Loves us and will protect us.

5 things I learnt and use from high school
I work as a support worker/ nurse in a rest home setting
    1) chemical titration equation, for making/checking appropriate medicine doses
    2) Learning what musical chords are by hearing them, helps to develop music and composing skills
    3) Careers Class, taught to write a CV, Cover letters, Defensive driving etc...
    4) Scientific report writing, writing help medical documents to help determine the course for the resident.
    5) Physics class, learning the fundamentals to apply force in ways to distribute weight to move things easier or to understand things such as how to fix specific equipment.
I found it was a important thing to go to high school, however I did my final year by correspondence, both worked for me but in the end it depends on the kid and how they learn. What's best for one kid isn't best for the other.

I was homeschooled all the way through highschool with my brother's.
    1. Christian apolagitics/Christian world view
    2. Spelling
    3. Sewing one of my favorite hobbies and useful for making dresses.
    4. Self discipline my last few years of highschool was me mostly teaching my self with my school books.
    5. Logic, I learned mostly about logical fallacies which is useful conversations and anylizing the news.
Bonus! 6. Geography I don't have to look at a map every time the news or some one mentions another country.
I loved being homeschooled. I Learned a lot from the experience and was able to do more things like traveling or learning different skills that wouldn't have been possible if I was in school.

5 things is easy: German, Italian, Spanish, History of Medicine, Literature Skills. I have a degree from Oxford and used a lot of my school knowledge whilst studying language and culture at university. What counts even more is the transferable skills I learnt at school that are of immense value in the wider world - analytical skills, teamwork, social skills. If a kid wants to be a doctor how do you think you’re going to teach them all of that scientific understanding at home if you haven’t studied it? How are you going to teach a kid to speak a foreign language if you can’t speak one? Instead of ruling out school maybe you should be more selective about which schools you pick and spend some of your money on a really good education that will give your kids a proper start in life rather than tethering them to the narrow confines of your home and state.

Have been homeschooling my 12 year old and 8 year old for two years now. It's wonderful to give them the one-on-one attention, and they are thriving both as students and as members of our family. I'm so glad I've had this extended time with them and that we left the rat race of private school. Our private school was wonderful, but we were busy all the time. And I agree with you it's more about childcare than necessity.
HOWEVER, I love the classics and personally learned a lot in school. The more intelligent a person is, the more inquiring the mind is. Learning can be very interesting and enriching, whether you use everything you studied or not.

Honestly, it was very difficult to think of five things I use every day from middle/high school. I didn't think it would be, but y'all make a very valid point. I only have one:
    1. Grammar skills. My high school English teacher my senior year taught me more about grammar and sentence structure than any other I ever had, and I still replay major points of his lectures in my head every day when I write to help keep me on track. I'm in college now, so his teaching has been very helpful.
I did gain a lot of important social skills and learned a lot of life lessons during my middle and high school years, but as far as actual schoolwork, I can't think of anything else.

From my middle and high school years, I personally learnt:
    - 3 foreign languages at school that I still use to this day
    - how to write in an academic/formal way which is a skill that I need on a regular basis.
    - discipline and hard work: by having to wake up early everyday and prepare for exams
    - how to work in a team
    - presentation skills
Thanks for this great video btw. This was super interesting!
I watched episodes of the series 'Vaccine Revealed' a few years ago which completely opened my eyes on the truth about vaccines and all the harm they have caused to humanity. Unfortunately, this information is being heavily censored nowadays so it becomes increasingly hard to find this type of high-quality content.

That’s interesting about school. It’s easy for me to think of 5 things, so I guess I can be your “one off”. 1) I learned how to speak Spanish well, and I use that in my job and town. 2) I use statistics to understand and assess the programs I’m responsible for at work. 3) I learned how to better write. I always used past participles, but I love writing and feel like I gained tools all the way through high school. 4) Our high school taught CPR in Health class, as well as other safety techniques, and I’m so thankful to have those in my “back pocket“ for every day life. 5) I learned about geography that helped me figure out where people are as I hear about them, from missionaries, from news, and other sources. 6) I learned so many other life lessons… like how to be brave enough to present in front of others (which terrified me, but now I love - and do through work) or exercising using my voice/agency (dropped physics based on my experience) or teamwork with band or my photojournalism class (both which fed my ways to express my creativity, which I feel is a God given passion and skill in my life)… interesting that this is your strong passion area. Food for thought.

As someone who just finished their honours biochem degree, I can’t imagine having gone through it without having any lab experience whatsoever or experience in lab report writing. I’m not saying it’s impossible, it would just be jarring at first!

@@Mr5432177 I didn't say kids shouldn't learn algebra. (I think Nate did though haha) I'm highlighting the real world involvement of home school groups in my area to learn meaningful and practical life skills. It's an added enrichment to the fundamentals of school subjects. If they are seeing real world examples and learning meaningful skills and say Hey I'd like to have this occupation because of it and algebra is involved, then of course algebra will be useful to learn for their success and they will be more apt to learning it. And they will learn it better because it becomes more relevant. I know I've always retained something better if it was relevant. That's how the brain works, it will hang on to what is necessary and dump what isn't.

One of my best friends was home schooled while I went to public school. I think one of the main draw backs of home school is the social aspect. In school, I was able to participate in plays, band/orchestra, sports, etc. Obviously you can do these things outside of school as well, but it’s nice when it’s part of your day. On the flip side, my friend was able to study what she wanted to study, on her time. So, I think she was able to learn more that aligned with her interests.
There’s tradeoffs for both, and I think it depends on the kid what’s best. As your kids get older, it might be worth letting them do a semester or year in school for middle/high school and see if that fits them better or home schooling. Education is not a one size fits all situation, so I totally see the case on both sides. Thanks for sharing! Always enjoying your videos :)

I learned from FFA to make speeches and leadership skills for meetings and activities. I learned really well from my English teacher how to write a research paper and I used it a lot in college and now to write Bible studies in our ministry. I also learned that people are horrible and unfair and mean and you need to learn how to deal with them because no matter where you go there are awful people. My history teacher was HORRIBLE but he did a good job of making us keep up with current events and that stayed with me. WE had current event daily quizzes and I thought that was a valuable skill. School is there to give you a taste test of different things so that you later on (after being presented with many different things) can make a decision about what you want any enjoy doing in life. Obviously, you can not start teaching someone the same maths as you learn to become an engineer, you have to start with the basics, same goes for all the other subjects. If you as parents homeschool your kids it is more likely that you will teach them about the things that you enjoy, but perhaps they would have been more successful in something you know less about. They would also miss out on the very important part of being around other kids, not just the kids you choose to put them in contact with.

Well Nate you just demonstrated that indeed you did not learn what you were supposed to from middle school to graduation: The variety and complexity of science, different points of views, different ways of viewing the world (not just through the Christian lense). Of course, by homeschooling your kids you will absolutely make sure that they become just as close-minded as you are, that they only learn how YOU and your Christian belief system view the world and you make sure that they don't get in touch with people that are different, gay, disabled, socially awkward or just non-Christian. I cannot speak for the American school system but just so you know I learned way more than five things during this time in Germany that I use very often or that are just so important to know in general: two foreign languages, the history of the World and my own country in particular, a basic understanding of natural science (yes it's good and interesting to know why objects fall down, that the earth revolves around the sun, what DNA is and how plants grow), painting techniques in art class, playing team sports according to official rules, learning how to work together with other students, prepare speeches, learn about the belief systems of all religions as well as the ancient philosophers..and I could go on and on. I can now travel the world and talk to the majority of people about so many topics because we share the same education and basic knowledges that we all learned during this time. How to cook, clean or talk to your boss, how to take out insurance or write a letter, how to do your taxes and how to write on a keyboard with ten fingers? I learned all these things just by observing and asking my parents AFTER school and you know what? Learning French in school (starting at the age of 11) only gave me the opportunity to study it in my twenties and living there for a year, my parents could have never tought me that and I am forever grateful for school AND my parents who tought me how it feels to be loved unconditionally (something school can't teach you).
Sutton I feel like whenever you speak about your kids you just radiate pure love for them. So I wonder why in the world you would think that spanking them would be a good idea? Would you feel good being spanked by your husband if you don't do what he wants you to do? So why would it be okay to do it to your kids who can't even defend themselves because they still depend on you in every way possible? In Germany spanking kids is illegal and for good reasons: it harms them emotionally because they are being mistreated by people they depend on and love the most. If you spank a kid they will not learn why something is wrong and how their bad behaviour harms others they will only avoid doing it again out of fear; just like a well-conditioned dog who doesn't have a clue why he can't hop on the couch but knows that every time he does he gets beaten. I hope you think about this in a quiet moment and especially for people who follow a religion who has a loving and forgiving god at its core, I just can't wrap my head arount how this would go well together.
