  • I thought I would put together a quick video on how I apply transfers to miniatures as I get asked this a lot. This is a very lazy and easy method and just requires a small amount of patience and a couple of important products.

Mate - your videos are quickly becoming some of the best videos out there for tutorials and learning. I cannot wait to see what you got coming down the pipeline next. Going to be subbing to your patreon once I get some personal stuff squared away but excited to see some of these videos quicker!

Thank you for this. Did you realize that you had a dedicated video on the subject when I asked about the transfers yesterday.

Been using this method since you showed it on twitch for a Space Wolf. Massive improvement over other techniques. Thanks for sharing here!

Great video! Quick question: is it true that vinegar can soften transfers the same way as micro sol? I’ve seen some people recommended this method if you haven’t got an access to micro sol. Cheers!

Do you use plain water to remove the transfer from the backing? Or micro sol for that as well?

do you seal the miniature after everything is done? btw those are the best vids out here for painters. on point!

I don't tend to seal as a habit from having worked in the studio. Varnishing is too much of a risk in general when I need to be absolutely sure the finish remains matt for photography and I don't want to risk changing the finish of any metallics. However, I see no reason why you shouldn't varnish if you find one that is reliable if the miniature is not just for display. The glaze medium I use I think acts in a similar way to a varnish and it has a very reliable matt finish.

Help. I always find Ultramarines transfers have a strange curvature which means when applied it sort of folds and creases, any ideas?

Hey Simon, yeah the ultramarines ones can be tricky, sometimes I take a scalpel and cut into the empty bit in the middle of the "U" and try to position it as best I can before applying the microsol.

Would you ever bother adding a gloss coat before a transfer, or is this unnecessary in your experience? I know a lot of people swear by this, but I never worked out whether this was a mostly irrelevant hangover from military modelling practices!

I have discussed this today with a member of EM. They seem to think it can help to varnish before and after with thicker transfers (newer GW ones tend to be thinner) however in general they don't tend to do this. If you aren't super careful when applying the microsol it can affect the surrounding paint because it is designed to soften the plastic transfer and the paint also contains plastic so the varnish can help protect the paint work. A coat of varnish after can also help protect it from damage on the table top. So the answer is yes by all means use it if you run into issues and the miniature is going to be handled, however I personally find it mostly unnecessary for display purposes and applying a gloss varnish means I have to try to get that surface back to a matt finish.
