27.5 Inch Ain't Dead | Yeti SB165 Turq T2 First Ride Review

  • 27.5 Inch Ain't dead. Yeti has gone big on 29ers recently, with its much-lauded SB100, SB130 and SB150 covering the full gamut for those who want big wheels from cross-country to enduro. But the Colorado company has just launched its first 27.5in-wheeled bike for some time: the SB165.
According to Yeti, it sees the big-wheeled bikes as its race-focused options, whereas the SB165 is aimed more at what it calls “ripping”. Basically, this means having fun on a bike: jumping, hucking, carving berms and - dare I say it - jibbing. It’s designed to be in its element in the bike park or bombing down technical terrain, whether you have an uplift or not.
To that end, it’s got (you guessed it) 165mm of rear suspension. All models are equipped with coil shocks and a 180mm-travel fork. The frame has been tested to what Yeti calls “downhill standards” for head tube strength, and the head angle is Yeti’s slackest at 63.5 degrees.
Let us know what you think of the SB165 in the comments.

As a 650b rider I’m extremely happy that Yeti has launched a new top of a range 27.5 mtb. It felt like there was a real shift towards 29ers over the past year or so with many new bikes coming in 29er only. I love the smaller wheels and even though I cannot afford this bike, I’m stoked that manufacturers are still taking the smaller wheels sizes seriously

Just rented this bike in Whistler. I have a 29er Sb 5.5. This was so much more fun and agile than my 29er and the suspension is supple in a way that I've never experienced outside of a DH bike. Braking bumps, roots, rocks, drops it plows through with reckless abandon. Actually preferred this bike in the park to the specialized demo 8 rental I had the day before, due to lighter weight, better tracking, and better feeling rear suspension. Climbing is manageable, but definitely not as efficient as my lighter, larger wheeled bike.

I am 6'2 and ride a Norco Fluid FS 2 in XL. This bike comes standard with 29' wheels (2.6 width) but because it's an extra large and the frame is scaled up nicely in tubing sizing and the wheels are boost, everything is nicely proportioned. I even changed the pedals to the large Stamp 1's by Crank Brothers as I have a size 13 foot. I finally feel like the beast I was meant to be as this bike just rolls over bumps way better than my previous bike:)

I ride a 27.5" 150-160 bike and in the last year I test drove about 20 bikes including the sb130 and sb150 and all of them had 29" wheels, my conclusion is that 29" feels dead to me, I don't feel the connection to the ground, I prefer the lively nature of the smaller wheels, the sb165 could be the option for me

    • @dadventuretv2538
      @dadventuretv2538 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Nit maybe what he means is that a 150 27.5 feels more lively than a 130 29er? Just speculating. To me that’s how I would describe it. To me, 29ers are more pedal bikes, 27.5 are more jib and jibe. I know people can pop and jump 29ers, but I’m no pro, dont get to ride nearly enough to really drastically improve (I never get to practice), and consequently it just takes more effort for me to play on a 29er. And to me rollover of a 29er is over related. I roll over fine on a 2.6 27.5. I mean seriously, if I’m having trouble rolling over crap on a 150/160 mm suspension, 2.6 wide 27.5 diameter tire bike, then I better go back to basics first. Honestly, tire width is way more important and makes much more of a difference where I ride than diameter- rocky gnarly trails.

I don't think 650b is dead, it just comes down to personal riding preference. Rather than make specific 650b/29er bikes, wouldn't it make sense to design the bike flexibly so the buyer can choose (and isn't this kinda happening already?). I realise changing wheel size can affect geometry, clearances, etc., but there must be ways to combat this with adjustable links and headsets, spacers, etc? The bike looks amazing, but that price...

No its not dead. Not even close. Why do you think Yeti is releasing it- because they realize that no matter how much the industry tries to shove 29ers down our throats there is still a huge market, aka people who still love smaller wheels, for 27.5. 27.5 rock. They rip through twisties easier, are easier to get and control air for those of us that don’t have the luxury to ride all the time cause we have, you know, careers that allow us to pay for these ridiculously priced but awesome machines, and are less exhausting if you live in a place with a lot of short downs and ups with a lot of accelerating. Btw, this is not to say that 29ers don’t have their benefits, they clearly do, but stop pretending that there is no point in having 27.5- they are better at certain things than 29ers. And omg stfu about wishing it was a 29er. There are plenty of 29ers that they make if that’s what you want. When doing a review of 27.5 bike please just stop the comments about it not being a 29er. Otherwise, nice review. And cool shots.

Top-10 of UCI XC and EWS are all on 29ers now; even UCI DH guys are all moving towards 29ers for certain tracks. You do not have to be as picky with a 29er due to it's rollver. Even if you are not a Racer, 29ers just helps you through the slow chunky sections easier, and because it rolls better, it will help you get through the longer days easier. However, at the Bike Parks on flowy and jumpy trails, and just for general fun, 27.5" is where it's at. I myself will always own both!

Erich von Cartmann funny, I find slow chunky sections to be where I hate 29ers the most. They wander more and are harder for me to pick and stay on my line, and the slightly extra rollover doesn’t seem to translate into less effort, but rather more effort to keep those big wagon wheels turning at slow speed. For slow gnar I’ll take 27.5 in a wider 2.6 to prevent falling down in between the rocks and with the lower tire pressure cruising along the tops more. I find I am far
Less fatigued. I prefer 29ers in fast gnar- to me 29ers excel when you can keep them at speed for extended periods.

DADventureTV , I have had the opposite experience. Through the slow chunky sections, those 29" are less likely to get hung up. In the technical uphill sections, same thing, those 29" wheels are easier to keep the bike going. I have cleared many uphill sections on my Ripmo where I use to have to walk. I am not a big fan of 2.6" tires, they ones I have tried have no sidewall support and feel way too bouncy when I pump them up to my desired pressure. For where I ride, I have to run my tires at 25 lbs or higher to prevent sidewalls from getting sliced when smashing through the rocks. I have even sliced a almost new double down casing when I ran my preferred pressure of 18-20 lbs.

DADventureTV , absolutely it is all subjective. I think we all can adjust to any bike and learn to ride them and love them. At the end of the day it is still 95% Rider, and all this talk about wheel size, geometry, etc, is all nitpicking and personal preferences. However, it is nice to be able to nitpick and try different things and share with each other our notes.

Erich von Cartmann yeah man. Great time to be a mountain biker. Really no bad bikes anymore, it’s more just about which one really feels just right for each rider, their trails and riding style. Demoed a bunch. Went Bronson V3. Love it. Perfect choice for me. My go anywhere, do anything, freedom machine.

They say this to make everyone on anything different feel like they are missing out on something ,which in turn makes you doubt the bike you currently are riding...basicly marketing spin, in some cases sure its going to be slightly better but generally for the average rider,... well lets just try and pry their wallets open

I am glad Yeti are updating the 650b wheel bikes. I was been put off as they were updating their their long travel flat bar gravel bikes. I do not and never will consider a 29er as a true mountain bike. Just because someone has decided to 2.5 inch wide tyre on 700c road wheels, flat/riser bars and suspension on a bike does not mean it will ever be a mountain bike. Leave the 700c wheels to the road and gravel market and have 650b wheels for the mountain bike market. I would never buy a 29er. If all mountain bikes become 29ers I will stop mountain biking as there would be no mountain bikes anymore.

Lol what? 27.5 inch is dead now? Says who? So 29er is the only way to go? Bigger wheel does not equate to better riding experience. Smaller wheel make it easy to flick around the bike when we are not 6 or 7 feet tall 🙄

I believe that Yeti (together with Santa Cruz) make the most beautiful bikes out there at the moment. However, they are so overly expensive :-(... Also, i do get that 27,5 still has some advantages, but only in smaller frame sizes (XS, S and maybe M) in an L or XL these wheels are just too small.

I'm tired of this whole 29er vs 27.5 routine... They still make 26 so what even makes you dream 27.5 is going away? They WILL sell 27.5 as long as people buy it, then they'll let Walmart sell it...
I REALLY wish TH-camrs would quit relying on the 29er debate as a video and actually put out something useful. I'm bored with the great 29er debate... surely you know SOMEBODY that has one you try for time to make your own decision... Major thumbs down for the 29er debate again.
It's just as bad as the flats vs clipless debate, you either like it or you don't... You can bring up points all day long why ones better than the other, but if the person DOESN'T like it, what's the point?
Some people just plain don't like the "monster" truck feel, so they won't buy one...

Can you guys please stop making 27.5 look like outdated tech ? Obviously there's still a place for them, I've owned a 29er and did not like it at all. So I won't ever be buying one again (mark my words, bike brands, i'm not ever buying one again). Even for the looks of 29ers is bad imo, it just looks way too large for a wheelbase too short on most bikes. Only DH bikes have decent 29 wheelbase that doesnt make it look like a pennyfarthing. Besides I don't see short people on 29ers either.

IMO the Zerode Taniwha is a better option than the Yeti. The yeti is a phenomenal bike with very good suspension but the Zerode has a huge advantage in not having a cassette etc. Can’t beat it.
