This was not the story I expected. Too often the fog of war obscures the fact that military personnel are not the only casualties. So sad, but true. A few days ago, a lady at my church told me the tragic story of what happened when her father was serving in France as an American GI during World War II. Allied intelligence learned that the Germans were planning a surprise counterattack on their positions by sneaking their soldiers in on school buses. The Americans took their positions, ready for the coming surprise Wehrmacht soldiers, and sure enough, right on time a French school bus came down the road where the attack was supposed to happen. After a moment's pause, the order was given to open fire. The bus was completely riddled with bullets and came to a stop. The lady said her father and other GIs walked up to the bus, looked inside...and instead of dead Germans were the bodies of slain French schoolchildren. Her father started sobbing hysterically and went into depression for years afterward ("I'm a murderer!" he apparently wept). She said that every time he saw the school bus back in America stop to pick up kids, he would start crying all over again. Finally, a wonderful man at the church met with him before he died and helped him to realize that although it was a HORRIFIC tragedy, he had no way of knowing that they were innocents and not enemy soldiers (rather, it showed just what an EVIL plan this was for the Germans to have even considered using). Although he felt guilt till the end, she said her father finally managed to find some comfort and feel that he was still in some ways a good man.

Tragic situation, it's good to know that he at least found a little comfort.
Something similar happened where I live, except it was from the air. A few months before the war ended, RAF bombed the Gestapo headquarters in our capital city. Unfortunately one Mosquito bomber crashed near a school, which lead to a wave of bombers dropping their bombs, thinking it was the target. 116 people dead, 86 of them were kids. Can't imagine what the pilots went through after that. War is truely hell.

No, war isn't hell. Hell is where sinner go to get punished for their sins, so only the guilty are sent there. War, is worse than hell because it doesn't discriminate between the sinners, saints, or the people in-between as it drags everyone into it's folds and everyone suffers. If I had to chose between hell or war, I'd chose hell because then I know the innocents won't be there, only the sinners. Thank you, friend. As an American, these type of stories are indeed incredibly painful, and I can't even imagine the grief and devastation our crews must have felt when they realized what had happened. It somewhat reminds me of an incident that happened during the Korean War, the North Korean army successfully figured out the ground signals that UN ground forces were using to show their location to American pilots and began copying them to create confusion. It resulted in an Australian platoon getting targeted with fire bombs despite their frantic waving to the diving planes at the last moment. If I remember correctly they IMMEDIATELY changed the signal system, but talk about a disastrous compromise of communications (and a horrifying misidentification). War truly is hell for all involved.

This reminds me of a video called Target: courterai Airfield (Sorry if I misspelled that). Anyways, it was a true story about another B17 that was hit in a head-on attack: the controls were damaged, and the pilots were wounded. The bombardier soon decided it would be best to jettison the bombs. Little did he realize... he dropped the bomb load on a farm. It killed some livestock, a few family members in the house, and badly wounded anyone who survived. To make matters worse, the last guy to bail out basically face- planted into the ground before his parachute had time to deploy. The plane itself was still flying, but was dangerously close to the ground. An old man heard the plane approaching his home, so he went out to see what was going on. When he opened the front door, there in front of him was the horrifying sight of a B17 heading straight for his house. At the last moment, he ran for his life just as the plane skidded along the ground and slammed into his house, obliterating it in an instant. True, this isn't as tragic as what happened in this bombing raid, but bare in mind: this all happened from a single bomber.
    Finally, I found the video!

I would love it if Yarnhub did a video on the Monchy 9 of Newfoundland. 9 men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment positioned at Monchy-le-Preux during the Battle of Arras in 1917 hid behind shrubbery and defended the town from a German force anywhere from 200 - 300 men strong for 11 hours to prevent a German break through. Small thing to note, bombs when dropped fall with a horizontal velocity that it started with. It’s just the physics of gravity.

    • @techheadiv
      @techheadiv ปีที่แล้ว +1

From a physics standpoint, the bombs landed where they were supposed to at the time of their release. The problem: where they landed wasn't where the flight crews had in mind. Science doesn't care.
Military personnel and R&D teams already knew about horizontal velocity. That's why they developed bombsights, a combination of mathematics, physics, and engineering as an attempt to accurately predict where bombs will land. However, a bombsight's effectiveness relies on the bomber's ability to maintain a steady course, the bombardier's ability to have a clear enough sight picture to timely release the bombs, as well as the plane's mechanical and weapons functions operating with no issue. It's complex enough without taking into account external variables such as weather, flak and interceptors.
This video does a excellent job of explaining what can happen when slight deviations occur under stressful time-sensitive environments. It's sad. Those civilians didn't have to die but it reiterates the points that war is hell and "...will make corpses of us all" (Faramir, The Lord of Rings: The Two Towers Extended).

In 2000 I flew on a B17 over north eastern Pennsylvania. It was a 20 minute flight and we got up to 5000 feet. The engine noise is incredibly loud. The thin metal skin of the plane was as thick as cereal box cardboard. I still couldn't imagine dealing with flack and bullets at 25k feet in the air. Those men were incredibly brave. Thank you.

The bombing of the Bezuidenhout (Dutch: bombardement op het Bezuidenhout) took place on 3 March 1945,[7] when the Royal Air Force mistakenly bombed the Bezuidenhout neighbourhood in the Dutch city of The Hague resulting in the death of 532 citizens.[8][9]

TY, and very sorry for the real truth. There is at least a dozen similar stories like this, and some have pointed to the Nordon bombsight. It was likely faulty , at 50% or even less , on target, but the "bomber mafia" forced it into acceptance . The failure rate of so many bomber missions was greater than any training issues ever seen.

I love this channel I’m glad I have another history channel that is accurate and knowledgeable about history, my wife calls me her history nerd bc all I do when I do watch videos and tv it’s all history stuff or historically (mostly) accurate movies. But I love this channel that TJ3 history and simple history and infographics show. I actually have my 4&2 year old kids into this kinda stuff and my wife says I’m ruining our kids but they love plane and ship videos and any videos where it’s like our COD vanguard game where they put the “bad guys” the Germans “to sleep” lol my daughter knows it’s not sleep and is 4 but she still says that so my son don’t start saying we killing people on the TV

"War is the continuation of politics by other means," -Carl von Clausewitz.
The problem is that conflict is in human nature, and that so long as War remains an effective (though inefficient) means to achieve political goals, we will never be rid of it.

Well, to be fair, you'd probably have the 'freedom' to talk about this if the USA didn't win, too, given how widely publicised in the German press it was.
Still, it's important to draw attention to the civilian cost of the Allied bombing campaign. A lot of people will dismiss any mention of such in regard to German civilians out of hand, usually with the same tired adage of sowing winds and reaping whirlwinds. But the cost of innocent lives across France, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark and the Low Countries should also be noted. I think the current death toll of all of those amounts to around 75,000 - significantly more than the British civilians killed in the Blitz and V1/V2 campaigns combined.

Several such mishaps happend in by German forces occupied countries.
Mostly France, Belgium, and the Netherlands closest to the UK had the most going bad or wrong air raids.
Even cities close to the German border were wrongfully bombed as they thought they were bombing German cities.
We must remember that civilan casualties were so high because industrial complexes in those days were surrounded with dense worker housing blocks.
