In our school library, we had this huge book filled with 5 to 10 long wartime propaganda comics, from air operations and sea operations and it had illustrations of various british aircraft Anyways, it had Operation Jericho in it. Essentially, the story was of a downed British pilot (forgot name, gonna call him Oliver) and a Resistance member, who escort Oliver to a rescue rendezvous point. Once Oliver was back in Britain, he found out that the Resistance member was captured by the Gestapo and was imprisoned in the very prison that he was about to destroy. He goes on the mission, the prisoners escape, and a Tiger tank is about to kill the fleeing escapees, when Oliver strafes the tank using his 20 mm Hispanos, killing its crew and then lands to pick up the Resistance member that had helped him. They rejoice, comic ends. I remember it also had a story about a village buying a P40 Warhawk for a brave mechanic that had removed a bomb, another one about an air ace facing new pilots and his rival, another one about the Romainian Army, and one about a squadron of Swordfish that evaded capture after landing with the help of rebels in Greece, and a bunch of others, including a PBY Catalina, an ace singlehandedly defending the whole of Tobruk using a captured Me109 and some other stuff. There were, I believe, two of these kinds of books in the library, and one of them were full of infantry and tank stories. Good times I had reading all day there. Edit: I believe that the name of the book is Commando’s Bandits at 12 O’Clock.
Damn, wish I was in your school. The only thing that's related to ww2 in my school (for books, newspapers or even magazines) is from a February 1989 edition Reader's Digest, the Shinano. Our school has very little info about ww2 to read despite our town is being living memorial-
I've always loved the appearance of the Mosquito and they look gorgeous in this video. Also thought the effect of the rain and snow streaming past the aircraft as they flew over the Channel looked quite good! Top notch stuff once again. :)
The beautiful DH.98 Mosquito. A legend amongst legends. This was one of many raids that solidified the Mosquito's place in history. The first wave were to destroy the walls with 500lb bombs with an 11 second fuse. The bombs hadn't detonated by the time the second wave arrived, the second wave were forced to circle back and basically became the third wave. Typhoons also took part in the mission as escort on the way in. They peeled off and engaged the enemy fighters while the mosquitos did their work. All in all allied casualties were atleast 2 mosquitos and 3 or 4 typhoons. The documentary Bandits of the Air can be found here on TH-cam and goes into this mission as well as the Schelhaus raid and the Philips radio plant in Einhoven.
