Love these trips....whetting the appetite as this time next week we will be driving all the way down from London to the south of France, via the A75 (1200kms) for the summer holidays! That motorway is the most beautiful in Europe….millau is great! If you travel on a Sunday, there are no lorries on the road. Calais, Rouen, Chartres, Clement Ferrand to Beziers is our way, some of those autoroutes are free, the A7 travelling east of Paris is busy and expensive.
I've done the route before many years ago and the bit over the Massif Central and Clermont Ferrand was interesting- the sense of being at quite a high altitude but relatively flat on the plateau very memorable.
I was thinking the same thing! LOL! Nerves of steel handling Harry's hard driving and devotion for being dropped off on the side of the road to film drive pasts. Huzzah to Mrs. Metcalfe!
Paper maps are brilliant for getting a birds eye view of what to look for, since electronic maps don't usually show nearly enough detail zoomed out. Lovely trip as always! Thank you for bringing us along.
Yes I'm a pretty geeky sort of chap and love my tech, but I have a huge collection of proper maps some going back to 1909. I am an OS fan but the IGN and Michelin Maps are pretty good, particularly if your covering big distances.
Sat Nav is fine for guiding you to where you're going...Paper maps are awesome for looking at and seeing roads, attractions etc..or just throwing a random pin at and deciding what destination you're putting in the sat-nav !!
As someone who lives in Perth Western Australia. Also known as the most isolated capital city in the world. Can only dream about going for drives like this.. In the same distance, I would be in the middle of the outback looking at red dirt. The road, scenery & the history of Europe is just something stunning to see
You just can’t beat the Michelin road maps! I sometimes find myself just opening them up to study them when I’m in my living room instead of turning on the tv! … haha
Well, as I have stated today, Harry first recommended it to me in one of his videos. It was so much better than Google maps. Maybe he has gone over to the dark side :) I can guarantee, he will be back.
I went to Millau with my sceptical family because of Top Gear, and they were completely won over by the beauty of the bridge and the area around it. An interesting detail: There are no structural or topographical reasons for the curve of the bridge: It´s pure aesthetics: Foster wantetd you to see all the pillars as you go over it... And it´s magical.
@Will Harris I sort of agree, but the other bridges the engineer has been involved with are not nearly as beautiful. Here he is: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Virlogeux
Fantastic! We have a trip planned to Millau and the Aveyron region as soon as harvest is over here in the Saskatchewan Prairies. Visits to France have always been basically to family - and rushed - but family are now no longer with us. I’m now 70 so our trip this time will be sort of open ended and much more leisurely. All I need is for a good crop and prices to hold where they are, then I will push the boat out and hire a decent car, not the usual mid range hatchback thing. Flying into Toulouse will also be a first for us. Keep the videos coming - on both cars and farming. My appetite is well and truly whetted for our trip, 5 years since our last one.
What a life this chap and family have..Another amazing episode . I remember during the mid 1970`s on a package tour,Page & Moy to the Monaco Grand Prix. Thinking on the coach with other travellers how nice it would be doing the trip in an E type job or similar.. Never happened for me but Bon Chance to them for getting there in life.
2019, I proposed to my wife on an French circular road trip from Caen, Tours, Dordogne (Bergerac, the proposal), Med Coast at Beziers, Toulon, Cannes, Nice, Italy (via your autostrada) then back to do Route Napoleon and home. All in our V6S FType. Showing my wife this tonight made her evening and mine. Great memories. She also does the filming. Thanks Harry.
Did 2000 miles in my F Type through France a month ago, Harry, so this little video bought back some great memories. Don’t stop filming your road trips 😁
Nah, not here @@iainbagnall4825 , more petrol money falls out of Metcalfe's pyjamas in the morning, than you or I could siphon into our cars' tanks, in a month. I think the sprogs will always have plenty of artisan foodstuffs from the farmers markets.
I did a similar route from Caan , via Le Mans , down to a place called Montreal ( no not Canada! ! ) near Carcassonne . It was year 2000 , on holiday with my family in Alfa Romeo 75 3litre . Drove all the way down . We did not see the Viaduct on the way there, but took an alternative route back, drove under it through a deep valley. Beautiful scenery down there . High quality road surfaces, whether on main roads or going up mountains on side roads. Happy days . Thanks for bringing back the memories , if unintentionally!
Now you have said that, maybe not the very same bridge. I remember on the way down , we came off some Autoroute near Souillac , and they were in the process of extending the route down to Cahors, so we had to take the N9 standard road only to encounter a horrific bottle neck of traffic-held us up possibly hour or more, in scorching heat too. So on return wanted to avoid all that and took minor roads, coming across this incredible gorge with river below, and this bridge so high up above our road and river running alongside, quite breathtaking. I’ve been looking at my original 1997 Michelin Europe map that I took with me at the time, to try and retrace my route back! No CarPlay , Tom Tom , Co -pilot , sat nav system used back then !
love these road trip videos! you never see Harry’s wife in any of his videos. perhaps she’s shy. his son Charley is often featured during his farm videos, but never the wife. also, I’d love to see the House! considering his car collection, I’d imagine his home would be incredible as well!
I was impressed by the Millau Viaduct , too ... but even more by the Pont du Gard Aqueduct which was not far away from your route. Gave me a real impression of what Romans were capable of . The bridge is still standing after 2000 years ... At sunset possibly one of the most beautiful bridges I've ever seen .
Thanks for taking us along Harry! What a treat. The Cévennes and gorges of the Tarn are a sublime escape which we've been sadly unable to reach this year, so the chance to take even this brief tour with you is a delicious reminder. Très bon!
What a beautiful area to drive through. The scenery and that bridge are absolutely stunning. I'm now seriously considering taking my Triumph on a similar trip in this area for my next holiday.
I've driven all of these roads on the way down to my villa in Spain over many years, and ironically spent most of 2019 working near the circuit Paul Ricard very close to the end destination. It's a beautiful part of the world. Never been lucky enough to own a car like this but I enjoy the journey whatever I'm driving. I'm on my way back down again next month in my trusty old Mercedes E wagon...can't wait :)
I’m just back today from an Scotland - south France - Italian riviera - alps and back . We ended up on the route napoleon not quite the same in a campervan but I still enjoyed it The hassle passengers are experiencing at airports just now , I think a road trip is the only way to do it !
The Millau viaduct was on our list pre-covid and finally two years later we made it and to the Tarn gorge, great road up to Point Sublime, fantastic destinations 😎
When we did the same thing pre Covid I was proudly telling French staff in hotels en route we were going to see the Meal-ow viaduct and nobody had a clue what I was talking about. When I discovered it’s called Mee-oh I realised why! Great to see you made it to that fantastic location Harry it really is spectacular, thank you.
I do a lot of WWI battlefield trips from the coast down to Switzerland. I always enjoying driving over the Vosges and staying in Colmar near to the Swiss and German borders. One of my favourite drives was from the German speaking area in Switzerland, down through the Italian speaking area and then into Italy. Some lovely roads and lots of lakes and tunnels.
Such lovely roads in France.Brought back memories of 25 years ago.Taking my 205 GTI 1.9 on the Night ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe travelling via Rouen ,Le Mans,Tour .through the mountains near St Etienne on to La Lavendu, Bormes along the coast to St Topez in the evening. Hope one day to be able to do again when I retire,so thank you for reminding me of some happy times.
We had many enjoyable trips around the Gorges Du Verdon which is about an hour and a half north of Saint-Tropez (and due north of Draguignan). The road snakes around the clear blue glacial water in the lake and it's magical. It's worth considering which way round to drive it though, depending on if you are driving a right-hand or left-hand drive car! Thanks again for the great content Harry.
Lovely video as always.Thank you Harry. My wife and I took our 916 series Alfa Spider 2.0 TS through that area 7 years ago on the way back from Bonnieux in Provence. The hotel we stayed at in Gordes was where the Ferrari Cub of Provence hold their AGM. Our little spider still turned heads !
Just found this video after watching your 2022 round up episode. Don’t fall into the TH-cam algorithm trap Harry, most of your content pops up on my Home Screen to watch but this one didn’t! Love this sort of content, especially in the depths of winter contemplating summer road trips for the summer ahead. Keep up the great work, look forward to more content like this in 2023
Vive la France! We did those kinds of rural French roads a few times, mostly in the pre-GPS era. Even with Michelin paper maps at a detailed level, I turned a bit early and ended in an orchard and I turned a bit late on another road trip and ended in a wheat field. Just relatively pleasant memories now. THANK YOU for reminding us what la France Profound is!
Great video. Added CarPlay to my F-type too..same type of thing. Voice is there if you set it to allow "hey siri" in your phone.... text, mail, weather, traffic, apps, music...."hey siri....play XXXX music....(and it does)" I find no need to use the other F-type stuff once it is all set up...CarPlay does 99.9999999% of my stuff now. 11/10 for me.
I love your trip videos also. Thank you for the Apple CarPlay review. I’ve been considering adding it to an older Jaguar myself and your comments are very helpful.
I love France. I remember approaching Rocamadour late one evening about twenty years ago and then taking a turn off up a single track lane for several miles before arriving at an absolutely exquisite guest house. Fabulous memory. So much of France is like a tourist attraction and the French know it and they really look after it.
As for the Apple Carplay retrofit, I had something similar done in my car to get Android Auto. Initially there was a Bluetooth issue as well. In order to fix it the shop disabled Bluetooth voice calls on the retrofit box, and allowed voice calls to go through the car's original Bluetooth system. The boxes and systems may differ between cars, but it may be worth exploring.
Crumbs ... that brought back some memories. Really only one place hadn't changed much since I was there - the Gorges du Tarn. Under somehat different circumstances; I was holidaying with my folks - Mum, Dad and my sister - just over 50 years ago! 😁The overhanging rockface and tunnels were - and clearly still are - amazing. The car I was in at the time .... Austin 1800 'Land crab'. The hydrolastic suspension was brilliant over any bad road surfaces and it carried 4, plus a boot groaning with luggage, in relative comfort. 😀
I believe CarPlay actually uses WiFi and not bluetooth. This seems to confuse a lot of people when trying to connect to other WiFi networks as it's not what they expect (bluetooth doesn't have the bandwidth to handle CarPlay, which is effectively streaming the entire user interface to your car's head unit in addition to audio).
Hey Harry, an update and a thank you. You introduced me to Michelin maps, (rather than those thick spiral bound things), how come I didn’t realise how brilliant they were before? You showed me how to easily and cheaply buy a Tag for French motorways from Eurotunnel, it will save my wife from climbing half out of the window of the SL to reach the slot to feed an unknown (till you get there) amount of Euros into the Peage. Now you’ve shown me the alternative route from Millau to the Côte d’Azur. We should be in Millau again a week on Sunday en route to St Maxime and I’ll be taking the D907 and D9 onwards to the south east. Thank you Sir. TonyS
Florac to Ste Enimie one of my favourite roads, driven it many times - camped in the gorge out the back of a TD5 90, spent a week in a gite on the plateau with a Mini Clubvan and best of all a couple of days with my Elise which was purpose built for just this sort of driving.
Love this: The fast-slow-fast pace, mixing some fun, spirited driving with taking in some spectacular sights, including the Millau Viaduct, which had me scurrying to Wikipedia for a deeper dive (and catch up with the rest of Foster's work, much of which I knew of, some of which I didn't). Sorry to hear your plans with the Lotus fell through, but it looks (and sounds!) like the Jag largely made up for it.
Did that area (D907) in southern France a few months ago on a road trip with my son. France has some great driving roads…thoroughly enjoyed the trip…and this video!
Hey Harry, I had a similar system fitted to my BMW i3 and love it! It's definitely not perfect and has its glitches once in a while, but overall super glad such a system exists. Looks great in your car, and I'm glad you included it in the video.
The jaguar seems to be very good on long term review. This part of France is very quiet for holiday sight seeing. I would prefer the massive central for gorges and arls for scenery. Presumably the new unit comes with firmware updates support.? Wonder why jaguar are not making an electric version ?
Nice trip again. I installed the same Car Navigation kit, 2 years ago in my F-Type 2014 3.0 S. it works lovely but it is not always connecting automatically. When near the car, Bluetooth connection, car unlocked, then walk to far from the car and coming back, the connection can’t reconnect again. Lock the car, walk away far enough, then get in and it will connect. But, it’s a wonderful update. Oh, bye the way… when I was searching for a kit like this, I could only find workshops in the UK. In the Netherlands only 1… and fortunately only 5 km from home!!! 😁
Another stunning video, great views, scenic roads and the Project 7 sounds wonderful as she overtakes slower traffic. The French tourist board should use your videos to promote driving holidays in France. Respect to your wife for getting some fantastic footage on these trips!
Driving from Nice to Borges Xmas 2005 and went down under the Millau bridge to get some photos right about where Harry was. Had a Renault 19-16-s at the time. Well I liked it LOL. Before the bridge was open all the traffic had to go down into the valley and in the summer this caused huge traffic jams. lots of good rally`s in the area. Problem with the narrow roads is you are always nervous about a truck coming around the corner towards you.
I live just South of Poitiers. Have had fun on my Triumph between here & Figeac many times. Even in a car there is some great driving roads. From swimming in the river Lot to laughing with 6 of my hairy arsed Cornish biker friends in full gear on the little tourist train (tractor & carriages) in Rocamadour.
Here's a different road trip idea for you Harry - In May 2018 we did Las Vegas to Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Moab, Telluride, Aspen, over Independence pass to Manitou Springs (for Pikes Peak but it was shut!), Denver, Estes Park, Rapid City, Sheridan, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, Salt Lake City, Moab (again), Bryce Canyon, Zion and back to Las Vegas. 4500 miles in 3 weeks. Our poor little Mitsubishi hire car looked very tired by the end but we had the most amazing time! Highly recommended. Love your trips to France. We're off down to Perpignan in September!
I have done that exact route under the bridge, also had a great lunch at an Auberge for about 12E. Not a region on most tourists radar, unless doing what we did which is heading from Paris to Beziers to get a canal boat
What a brilliant road trip. Wife and I rode our motorbikes through the Gorge du Tarn in 2019. The road follows the river with cliffs towering either side. Much better than actually going over the bridge.
I'll never have the opportunity to travel on such roads so thanks for another great video trip away Harry. France is such a beautiful country, not so conjested as our when you get out of the cities and big towns.
It does feel kind of aftermarket, in that it doesn't quite blend with the OE system. Two markedly different systems sharing a head unit/ display. Reminds me of the days of plugging an adapter into my cassette deck so I could listen to my portable CD player
@@ChoPi-Eww Yeah true fully integrated systems will cost a fortune. Mine is really just a separate system that connects to the radio via AUX. So, like Harry's I can listen to the radio from the car or the head unit not both together. It's not the greatest of problems though.
Highly recommend the Tarn Gorge and roads around there in something small and fun. I took my Lotus Elise there and it was a blast. Out of season or early morning definitely best - easy to get stuck behind RVs and the like otherwise. Some of the roads off the "main" one are deserted and have great views.
Harry, back in the summer 2016 I drove from Montpellier and drove past the Milau viaduct. I also saw the gorges you mention. Spectacular. We were driving an X5 3.0 diesel, so not sporty at all - but still a great trip.
Harry, many thanks for sharing this road trip video in France. Beautiful scenery, lovely weather & the car's not bad either. However, the stand out for me was the Millau Viaduct........what a stunning design and I appreciate the unusual view you showed us of the tall, elegant columns.👍👍
Driving to the Black Sea in a couple weeks from Oxford. 14 different countries in 3 weeks. Love your videos Harry, inspire me to do more road trips (not that I need an excuse!).
I really do like these road trips Harry, keep doing them. I'd love to see you do a big trip out to Georgia (though perhaps not through Russia) Its actually such a beautiful place.
I bought my humble Skoda Yeti in 2015 and it came with CarPlay compatibility from new. Still using the car today - the thinking man's Audi. It's been over the Millau bridge several times en route to Barcelona for the ferry to our house in Mallorca (a great option for a driving holiday, the roads there are superb) and we're going again in September. The Yeti is great but it would be lovely to do in in an F-Type and with time to look at the bridge from below, great idea.
The Norman Foster bridge is beautiful, just as the Project 7. And France, what can I say? Never been but every time I see Le Tour or Harry in France I want to visit.
I always enjoy hearing the P7 getting on down the road - if a noise could tear spacetime apart, I always imagine it would sound like that! Getting on for 5 years ago, a friend and I had the idea of taking the F-Type SVR and an iPace down to Millau, going via autoroute in one direction and avoiding them in the other, with the specific aim of seeing which was the better GT, and maybe doing a press story about the best of the 'old' versus the incoming 'new' ways of driving cars. The old road under the Viaduct was going to be the turn-around point. Sadly, things did not go as planned and the trip never got off the starting blocks. Having seen your run in this video, it's not an opportunity to be missed lightly! Once I was well enough again to think of such things, I had neither the finance or access to the vehicles.
Another great road trip , we are just finishing off our road trip having taken in Annecy, Davos, stelvio, Nice around the coast then back up to the Normandy beaches in an xkr, great roads apart from the speed cameras in Italy 😀
Love these trips....whetting the appetite as this time next week we will be driving all the way down from London to the south of France, via the A75 (1200kms) for the summer holidays! Gorge du Tarn is a real treat. Grandparents used to have a place in Tarn and it really is a lovely part of the world.
Keep up the great work, look forward to more content like this in 2023
Was really nice to see the Gorges du Tarn, Used to live there from the age of 8 to 28. Memories....
Great to see someone else appreciating Foster's exquisite work
I love your trip videos also. Thank you for the Apple CarPlay review. I’ve been considering adding it to an older Jaguar myself and your comments are very helpful.
What was really fascinating was watching the construction of the viaduct. Brilliant stuff.
I love France. I remember approaching Rocamadour late one evening about twenty years ago and then taking a turn off up a single track lane for several miles before arriving at an absolutely exquisite guest house. Fabulous memory. So much of France is like a tourist attraction and the French know it and they really look after it.
👌😉
Can't believe its been seven years with the project 7. Nothing better than a road trip in a great car.
It’s a combination of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
That’s right, Harry. Show us how it’s done. A life well lived. Simply brilliant.
I feel I now want to see Harry's Boat trip as well!

Florac to Ste Enimie one of my favourite roads, driven it many times - camped in the gorge out the back of a TD5 90, spent a week in a gite on the plateau with a Mini Clubvan and best of all a couple of days with my Elise which was purpose built for just this sort of driving.
I've got the kit for my 2018 Jag XE, installed it myself. Works like a charm, serious upgrade to an otherwise outdated infotainment system.
When he gets the map out 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Carnt beat a proper torn and used paper map :)
Awesome Open Championship going on, but I gotta take a break from it for this vid! Already know it's an enjoyable watch.
The most interesting Jaguar in a long time. Thanks Harry.
Suggestion re CarPlay, you can switch the left hand controls to the right on your phone. So it's easier to tap the menu button and the recent apps.
Good one, didn’t know that
3:32 for the under 30 years old, young viewers, THAT'S called A MAP. And it is used to navigate without having to use google maps or Waze.
Every time I check off something on the travel bucket list. Something new gets added. Thanks Harry.
How hairy are these guys?
Loved Harry overtaking the hay wagon.
I have done that exact route under the bridge, also had a great lunch at an Auberge for about 12E. Not a region on most tourists radar, unless doing what we did which is heading from Paris to Beziers to get a canal boat
I used to love driving down through Cleremont Ferrand, Millau, Lodève etc on my way to the South before the viaduct existed. Beautiful roads.
What a brilliant road trip. Wife and I rode our motorbikes through the Gorge du Tarn in 2019. The road follows the river with cliffs towering either side. Much better than actually going over the bridge.
my dad got our rented Transit campervan stuck in the Gorge du Tarn road in 1980. I still recall the swearing.
I'll never have the opportunity to travel on such roads so thanks for another great video trip away Harry. France is such a beautiful country, not so conjested as our when you get out of the cities and big towns.
There's actually quite an industry dealing with these retrofits. I recently fitted a full Android head unit to my '04 X3
would go iphone
Hats off to you Harry, you just have to look at all the positive comments on here, that says it all. Great content as always.
Love the road trips and chapeau to Mrs M for the filming
Love the tour! Thanks. I've driven over the Millau Viaduct and wish I had taken the time to explore that area. Need to get back there some day.
The shots from under the viaduct are amazing.
Thank you Harry.
Another great road trip , we are just finishing off our road trip having taken in Annecy, Davos, stelvio, Nice around the coast then back up to the Normandy beaches in an xkr, great roads apart from the speed cameras in Italy 😀
13:35 min - What a great hotel!! 👍 Great trip Harry!👌 Love the Euro road-trips. ☺️
Great pictures, we did almost that route to you but from south to north in a Boxter S twelve years ago
For Millau say Mee-o. Been over, but not under the work of art during a stay in the Tarn Valley. Fantastic terrain.
on an older version of this system there was a mixed audio setting that allowed you to use navigation + OEM radio
