Fun fact: Oregon State RB Steven Jackson was born in Las Vegas, this bowl was his final game in college and he finished the game with 149 rushing yards 4 rushing TDs, plus 5 catches for 51 yards and TD through the air. After that he became a Nobel Prize winning scientist for his numerous contributions to the entertainment of those in St. Louis over many years.

Steven Jackson was an underrated back he hasn't gotten the appreciation he deserves probably mostly he replaced Marshall faulk, and played for some drummer rams teams but he should get hall of fame consideration.

There is an error. From 1981 to 1991, the California Bowl (the Las Vegas Bowl's predecessor) matched up the Big West and MAC champions, and this continued when the Las Vegas Bowl was created with Fresno St's move to the WAC in 1992 for five years. The 1996 edition fell within this period. Nevada was the Big West champion in both 1995 and 1996, with Toledo winning the MAC in 1995 and Ball St doing likewise in 1996. As such, the Wolf Pack were obligated to play in Vegas both years.

On an interesting note. Oregon State running back Steven Jackson is from Las Vegas. So I’m sure quite a bit of the crowd that was there were people who saw him play at Eldorado High and wanted to see him again.

I kind-of wish he had a different name that excluded the team names and focused more on himself because he’s eventually going to grow to the point where he is his own brand soon enough. We all know there’s no one like him on TH-cam, and he does more to inform people about the history of the game than ESPN does. There’s guys who talk about the history of the game but no one who focuses on these random stories that we otherwise would never know. He’s long been on par with FlemLo, and again he tells player stories not stuff like this.
Am I the only one who thinks this about the name?

Here is one I really wanted to tell you about is way more obscure. On October 8, 2010 might be the first and last time that a NCAA team played a CIS team under Canadian rules while both teams were from Canada. 2010 was the first season for Simon Fraser in NCAA D2. Before that they played in Canada’s CIS, which is their version of the NCAA. The two schools SFU and their rival British Columbia decided to keep their rivalry going even though their in different governing bodies now. That season the game was in BC so it was to be done with Canadian rules. 3 downs, large field, rouge, everything. This was already a rivalry, now with SFU leaving the CIS this game had some nationalism thrown into it as well. Not only was BC playing this game for the CIS, their playing this game for Canada and 3 down football. And SFU basically became America’s D2 team. If only for this game. SFU won the game 27-20. But from listening to the BC broadcast it wasn’t that close. BC had no clue what to do to stop SFU run game. BC, with some pressure from the CIS decided not to continue the game and neither team has played since. There has been talk of continuing the series with American rules when it’s at SFU and Canadian rules when it’s at BC. But nothing has come to it. So October 8, 2010 might be the first, and last time a NCAA team played a CIS team under Canadian rules while both universities are Canadian.

Shrum Bowl is back on the schedule, Dec. 2 2022. It honestly isn't that big of a deal for Canadian rules vs American rules. In BC there are two leagues, the community league that plays Canadian rules and the high school league that plays American. Most football players here grew up playing in both leagues at the same time. There are even Americans that live on the border that will go play for White Rock. Besides, CIS teams go down to the states to play NAIA teams all the time and they even play teams in Mexico. The CIS was just pissy that SFU used them because they were originally in the NAIA but their conference dissolved so they went to the CIS while trying to get into the NCAA. Let's not forget, the moment SFU was accepted into the NCAA the CIS barred them from playing their last season in the league which forced the NCAA to restructure their entire schedule just to accommodate SFU on an emergency basis. I think the difference in leagues and the rules played represent BC really well, a high school league that plays American rules, a community league that plays Canadian rules and the two college teams do the same. Besides, there have been plenty of times in the rivalries history where UBC outright refused to play SFU because of how bad they were in comparison, so even if the CIS is allowing this there might come another time where UBC just refuses to play.

    Loving this channel!
You should look into Marshall's jump to FBS in 1997. They outbid all the other MAC schools to host the MAC title game a bunch of times, winning it their first four consecutive years at home (despite sometimes having a worse record than the other division winner) and taking the MAC's only bowl bid. 2000 Was especially crazy, as they beat a 9-2 WMU in a rematch, taking the MAC's bowl at only 6-5.
The next year, in 2001, Toledo finally outbid them to host, and won the MAC title, before Marshall returned the favor the following year again in Huntington. 2001 was also frustrating for other MAC schools though, because the first year Marshall was finally dethroned, the MAC got a second bowl bid, which went to, of course, Marshall.
The Herd was truly hated by all those other schools - big time, after moving up from FCS and straight up dominating.

Corvallis, Oregon to Las Vegas - 15 hour drive
Fort Collins, Colorado to Las Vegas - 13 hour drive
Albuquerque, New Mexico to Las Vegas - 8.5 hour drive
I’d argue putting the Lobos in this game was the best option. The Lobos had a better season than CSU and deserved to be in the Bowl with the bigger payout ($800k Vegas Bowl vs $400k San Francisco Bowl). Lobo home games were better attended that season than CSU home games and the drive is more manageable from ABQ to Vegas than it is from Fort Collins. None of the 25,000 that showed up to the game knew it would be a blowout, in fact OSU was only a 2.5 point favorite going into the game and UNM had beaten CSU head to head so thinking that CSU would’ve been a more competitive game doesn’t really compute. All signs pointed to it being a competitive matchup. I’d argue the lower attendance was more a result of there being no corporate sponsor for the game and it being an unreasonably long drive for OSU fans rather than the Lobos being a poor selection. To fly, OSU fans needed to drive 2 hours to Portland for a direct flight to Vegas, whereas ABQ likely had multiple direct flights to Vegas available. Additionally, Lobo fans would be familiar with making the trip to Vegas for UNLV games as the played there every other year on the conference schedule. Nothing about CSU stands out as being a better option and OSU probably contributed less to the overall attendance than UNM. The sparse crowd you see in the background from the footage you included is after the game was a blowout and Lobo fans had left. I don’t think anything about this selection was controversial, it was just lopsided final score in a game not many people were invested in to begin with.

I lived in Las Vegas around this time. The talk in the papers and even some of the sports books was CSU coming out as soon as they won their last game. Many of the sports books got little or no action on the game. It just honestly didn’t spark any interest. And as for the reported 25,000 fans in attendance? That was actually tickets sold/given away. The actual attendance was between 15,000 and 20,000.

This performance by OSU would carry over into their very next game, in which they would pull off one of the biggest upsets in program history. Successfully. Nothing of note would happen in that game to screw it up. That's what I remember. On a completely unrelated note, I never watch extra point trys, since they are routine and automatic.

Ummmm....the main home college fan base in New Orleans belongs to Tulane, not Louisiana (Lafayette). Lafayette is nearly 200 miles away from NOLA. The main reason that UL(L) had repeated invites to the New Orleans Bowl was because of the obligation of that bowl to award a Sun Belt Conference team a bid. Also, UL(L) is the closest Sun Belt school to NOLA, so it would figure that they would be better able to get their fans to travel to NOLA for that game. The fact that the Ragin' Cajuns had a very competitive team certainly helped as well.

Not really sure how I feel about this. I mean, I understand the point of view of the executive director, but don't we also rage against college football for making decisions based on money and politics and not what's done on the field? New Mexico was the second best team in the conference. They earned the right to play in the second best bowl game the conference gets. The video even said that NM had a better conference record, better overall record, a ranked win, and beat CSU head to head. But now we're rooting for college football politics to override what these players achieved on the field? Again, I get it. The LV Bowl needs to make money, it needs attendance, and the executive director made a decision based off of maximizing that outcome, which is her job. But we can't agree with this AND complain that college football is influenced too much by money.

While the trip from Reno to Vegas and vice versa isn’t a particularly short one, it’s one that’s commonly made from Reno for the Wolfpack. The real issue was that their game against Ball State, as with many Las Vegas Bowls, was held on a weeknight and was brutally cold and windy (that was literally my first memory of attending that game). And worse than that, Sam Boyd Stadium is in an absolutely awful location far from the city proper which is prone to lots of wind during the night, and December nights here can already be pretty cold. Those factors contributed just as much to the game’s low attendance, if not more, than UNR not being a local team under your definition.

  • @brian2440

I’m not sure of this is just a historical showcase, but there are a couple problems for what is discussed in this video.
    1. 2003 and 2004 being the only time that the same team was brought back for the bowl. The Las Vegas bowl has had the same team play since 2014-2015, and actually had the same team play in back to back to back games in 2010-2012 with Boise State.
    2. 2003-2004 saw the largest attendance drop. While there was less overall attendance, the Las Vegas Bowl lost nearly 1,000 more people than in any other attendance drop from 2010-2011.
While it may have been a financial success for the bowl, I’d say the more controversial Las Vegas Bowl was 2011. Because of bowl tie ins I guess you can say that Las Vegas got the team they wanted, but Boise State being ranked #6 in the country and not playing in a BCS bowl was absolutely absurd - especially when 4 lower ranked teams made one over them.
But the sheer lunacy to put a .500 team from any conference against a Top 10 ranked team has got to be one of the dumbest decisions of all time. In fact consider the historical context over the last 4 years the bowls literally put a 49-3 team (all time ncaa record) against a 21-27 team. Arizona State had lost more games in 4 years than Boise State had lost in the previous 11 seasons.
Arizona State never had a shot. Before they even got to the game they never had a shot.

    • @JaguarGator8
      @JaguarGator8  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You are correct on points 1 and 2. However, when I do these videos and look at the perspective of the decision, I only look at the information that they knew at the time, so they don’t have the benefit of foresight into what future editions of the game would look like from a team and an attendance standpoint

  • @patrickracer43

So, they knew that if New Mexico went back to the Las Vegas Bowl, Sam Boyd Stadium would be empty because it was empty the previous year that New Mexico played in the game, and the executive director really wanted Colorado State because they felt that Colorado State could actually fill seats at Sam Boyd Stadium... So having New Mexico play some absolute trash football is a total galaxy brain move

The not inviting someone 2 years in a row because fans won't travel makes sense if its some low or mid- tier city hosting the bowl, with little to nothing else to do in December, like maybe Shreveport, or Detroit, or if its literally a cross-country trip. But this is VEGAS, a huge destination in and of itself. And its not like Vegas is really that far from ABQ, its still SW US region. A 90 minute flight, or a solid day of driving. Plus, I'm sure there's plenty of alums and fans in other places closer to Vegas, including Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. it's not like every single person who goes to New Mexico for college were from ABQ to begin with, or never leave after they graduate. Also the logic doesn't make sense either, if NM was either going to the LV bowl or SF bowl anyway, why would they worry about being away from home for Christmas if the game was in LV but not if it was in SF?

I'm fairly sure the Bowl didn't have a choice in the matter of bringing Nevada back in 1996--the Big West was still around and I believe the Big West and MAC champs got automatic berths to the Las Vegas Bowl in those days. Remember, the Las Vegas Bowl began life as a replacement/offshoot of the old California Bowl/Raisin Bowl, the "mini-Rose Bowl" between the MAC and Big West.

No. The worst team selection process in Vegas Bowl history came in ‘98. That game proved that wins (even a head-to-head win as the road team) never mattered. That year, Miami (OH) was 10-1 and beat UNC in Chapel Hill to open the season. UNC finished 6-5... but the Las Vegas Bowl took UNC instead of Miami U. for name value.

JG, your returning teams in bowl deal isn't always true. It's honestly a matter of circumstance.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers were in both the 2020 and 2021 cure bowls.
Both games were great and successful games, and both of them either did or nearly gave me a heart attack.
Still a great video though, but it just goes to show you need to know the circumstances too.

Absolutely love your channels and thank you for sharing your love of Football and and history with us!
I have one request and that you check out the 1977 Heisman Trophy presentation which was aired live on television and produced by either Scotch or most likely Cocaine!! This is the strangest thing I’ve seen in quite some time especially since it was hosted by no other than..O.J. Simpson.
I’d love to hear your take on how ridiculous this was and how this was really deemed as “entertaining”?
The awkwardness amongst the people in the audience had have been strange not to mention how incredibly SMASHED everyone seems to be.
Even if you don’t do a video on this particular one then it’d be cool just knowing you got some insight from it!!

Oh I’ve had that one on my list for a while. That was honestly the main reason I started this channel, so that I could eventually talk about that train wreck
Some day soon, that’ll happen. No doubt about it

@@JaguarGator8 Right on! Every single time I’ve watched it there’s something else that I notice that’s just so bizarre. I feel like the way the show’s producer had these words for everyone involved:
      1. Everyone is required to drink, drink and when not drinking..oh yeah DRINK! (Paul Hornung especially)
      2. Also any nominees for any award are not allowed to show any emotion or anything resembling excitement.
      3. Make bad small talk and hopefully make it as awkward as possible and remember to keep drinking!
      -Elliot Gould’s face from
      27:11 to 27:37 is priceless!!!
      - OJ’s joke at 26:30 🤭🤫😬

I don’t really think this is a big deal. Postseason college football except for the three games that make up the current college football playoff are nothing more than glorified exhibition games.
There needs to be a 16 team college football playoff. All 10 conference winners regardless of win-loss record qualify. And then the six at-large teams would be selected by the old computer ranking system that they used in the BCS days. But updated to be a better program than it was.
And then all 16 teams would be seated by the BCS system. Taking all politics out of the selection process.
Just think for the first time in history there would be meaningful college football between the first weekend of December and New Year’s Eve. What a concept. And the top 15 bowl games with host the playoffs. Or maybe the first round of the playoff could be at the higher seeded team. So there would not be as much travel for fans.
I know this cannot happen at least until 2026. But ESPN and the power five conferences who really run college football can get this done.
The NCAA’s only role in college football is rule enforcement. And that is becoming more bogus by the year due to the transfer portal and NIL.
I am 67 years old and I would like to see this while I am still in this current life.

I think you have a good ability to investigate, and choose possibly interesting topics that a lot of others haven’t spoken about, but you have a terrible inability to accurately portray the story and stay with the topic at hand. Time and time and time again you present us with the issue, then go on a few minutes of unrelated tangents and manage to tie (some) of that information into the pertinent topic at hand, but almost every time I finish watching your videos I’m like, “okay…but why was that other 5 minutes of info put in there?” And sometimes I’m like, “wow, that didn’t answer any questions that you posed for us as the viewer.” I get you’re trying to pull from some of the successes of other storytellers in the sports realm on YT/FB etc. but what they do, that you just haven’t grasped, is that they have an impeccable ability to have ALL the information used in their video be pertinent to the immediate story, and almost always there isn’t left over fluff, you need to cut the video time down a little, reel in people with your storytelling with immediate stories on underground sports stories that most people haven’t heard of. and then slowly find your niche in your ability to tell side stories that lead up to the big climax. Until then, it’s in my opinion, that you’re going to continue to fall short.
