  • This is a high quality exhaust for the JDM connoisseur! If you want a nice deep tope with minimal drone this is for you. This dual exit exhaust features burnt blue tips and is incredibly lightweight exhaust coming in at only 24lbs.

    I just installed this HKS Spec-L on my '22 GR86. The fitment is perfect, no adjustments needed, installed in an hour or so. The sound is perfect for me. Its not loud and obnoxious. It is a little louder on start up like most, then quiets down at idle the tone is heavy on bass and yes, you do get crackles and burbbles, though they are very toned down. It is perfect for a mature driver. I'm certain it will pass 90 dB sound limit track days at Laguna Seca. Headers would undoubtedly take the dBs up a notch. Very pleased . I think it sounds mellower than the AWS touring which a buddy of mine has on his BRZ.

    A cold start and an intentional/longer interior sound clip would have been nice.
    One of the most difficult parts about exhausts on this car is the sensitive (accelerated) cold starts.
    How is it?
    Also sounds very similar to the fake speaker sound imo, so largely paying for other people to hear the same on the outside - dunno if that’s really worth it 😂

    • @AyyGin
      @AyyGin 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cold starts are noticeably louder than stock but not obnoxiously loud and quickly dies down in under 30 seconds. Idle is a light hum that's barely louder than stock imo. If you're sitting in traffic on a busy street, you probably won't hear the idle at all and definitely not over your music.

    Why does the tips seem to be of a much larger diameter than all other Spec L II's I've seen? Is it a US thing?
    Normally this exhaust seem to have quite small diameter exists, with tip finishers bolted on on the outer rim of the tip, and not as a single piece as this seem to be.

      @SWAPSHOPJOE I picked up a set of RCE SS2. I plan to track the car so I needed something geared to that. The BCs were just fine for daily driving, only really felt the stiffness when hitting large bumps or big gaps/transitions in the road surface. Drove over 6 hours total to get to FTSpeed and back in one day and I felt just fine.

    • @pooljunkie85
      @pooljunkie85 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m in the same boat being a little older (37) and I got this car to hopefully build it up for regular track day use. I like aftermarket exhausts but hate it when it’s overdone, and IMO that’s a thin line for a lot of cars out there.
      Been doing a bit of research on this platform and generally consensus is that for a tamed but good sounding cat-back, it’s either this or the Apexi N1-X. There are decent offerings from AWE and Borla too but I’m personally wanting to keep it all JDM parts.

    • @AyyGin
      @AyyGin 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      This HKS Hi-Power Spec L, the HKS Hi-Power Spec L 2 (a little quieter), the HKS Legamax Premium (even quieter but has the best aesthetics imo), Apexi N1-X, or if you don't mind putting on a previous gen catback - the Invidia Q300.
      My recommendation is to just go for this Hi-Power Spec L. I have it on my car for a few months now and I find it to be the perfect volume when driving around at night but wish it'd be maybe 20% louder during daytime city driving because general road/traffic noise actually makes it harder to hear the exhaust. The other HKS options would sound way too close to stock for how much they cost. Another very non-scientific way to describe the sound of this exhaust is that pedestrians will have no doubt that your car has an aftermarket exhaust when you cruise by because of its distinct bassy rumble and added volume but you'll never be THAT guy with the loud exhaust. There are times when I wish I'd gone with a more fun catback like the AWE Touring for the extra rumble and pops/bangs but I know I wouldn't be happy with it 100% of the time either because of the risk of running a much louder exhaust. Hope this helps.

    • @pooljunkie85
      @pooljunkie85 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AyyGin Thanks for the report, that’s all good info. Sounds like Spec L is going to be the way to go, I was considering either that or the Apexi but this certainly helped me decide.
      I agree with the AWE option. I went with their touring res for my daily (22’ M340i) because of availability at the time and the aesthetics of them mainly…it sounds decent and adds some mild burbles that was otherwise missing completely in stock form, tolerable volume 95% of the time but to me personally it’s just a touch too loud and obnoxious still when you get her up in the rev range or during a cold start, just doesn’t match the car very well since I’ve kept it stock performance-wise. If I’m to keep the car for a while, I might think about changing it out for a M-performance axle-back for a more OEM experience.

    • @AyyGin
      @AyyGin 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @pooljunkie85 I think you'd be fine with either options. I have zero first hand experience with Apexi products but from my research, that model has basically the same design philosophy - not too loud with little to no drone.
      The thing with aftermarket exhausts is that we'll never be happy with them 100% of the time (unless maybe a valved option). With the HKS, there are times I wish it'd be louder but I'm never worried about it being too loud. With something like the AWE, I'd probably get the most enjoyment under ideal conditions but wish it were quieter most other times. Option 1 just seems like a better dilemma to deal with on a daily basis. There's also a reason why used AWE exhausts come up for sale so often lol.

    • @rlopez3188
      @rlopez3188 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m also 36 and just bought this exhaust. I didn’t want anything too loud because I’m way past that loud young adult stage of my life. I just want something that feels more mature but also gives a little extra that the stock exhaust doesn’t.

    I put a Fast Intentions X-pipe cat back and a Stillen Gen 3 long tube CAI on my 370Z and picked up about 20 peak rwhp. After an Ecutek dyno tune, I picked another 20 hp with an overall 15% increase in torque across the whole rev range, plus the sound is great.

      ...its HKS. they might do good things on the GTR, but I'm in the camp the rest their offerings are marginally better than stock and are still riding their name from the 90s. I still think HKS tunes their exhausts to comply w/Japanese noise regs because I've never heard anything overly aggressive from them.
