    Hey guys I would like to say that I greatly appreciate the number of people who took the time to correct the silliest mistake I've ever made... EVER. Honestly I feel so embarrassed. But in my defense I was beyond tired from the extended days and sleep schedule changes I've had these past weeks. It has been straight torture. I have also not been part of the editing process due to the high volume of work I've had during this time. So no chance to catch it before it went live.
    Ok now to the mistake...
    The trailer brake valve mentioned in the video, applies the service brakes of the trailer, not the spring (parking) brakes of the trailer. It works almost opposite of what I stated in this video. Pulling the lever supplies air to the service line, and essentially the air pressure supplied determines the pressure that the service brakes are applied.
    The brake mechanism I mention is what the little red trailer brake button does. :) Stay safe out there everyone!

    As a professional driver for almost 30 years, I want to give aspiring drivers some advice. Once you have experience, and feel confident, don't take abuse from employers. Know your worth and don't work for less. Don't get yourself in desperate financial position where you can't look elsewhere for employment. Capitalism is a nasty business, and those in power are always trying to bleed you. If you are young and want to work overtime and save money to invest, that is a good plan. Invest in property you can rent out while on the road. Eat healthy and exercise everyday. And listen to educational podcasts and audiobooks on a variety of subjects. You can get a college level education with all the material available. Keep your eyes on the road and don't hit anything. Never stop learning and growing.

    • @leroy2576
      @leroy2576 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      That is great advice for any job and for everyone. Thanks!

      BTW I work 40 hrs a week doing local drop and hooks within a 100 mile radius of central NJ and make $1200 gross, $30/hr. I did better hauling cars, but it's more stress. Driving is a serious important role in society. We need to support each other and stick together (union) and make sure we can receive a liable compensation.

He had to get out 10 years or so ago after falling off a trailer and fucking has back up. He loved it though and I've been contemplating picking up the profession. He's been solid info for me :)

    Shelby, here you go. From the manual:
    Dash Lights
    The dash lights switch is operated by pushing the upper half of the switch and holding to obtain the brightness desired. Pushing and holding the lower half of the switch will dim the dash lights.

    Respect from an old trucker. You can tell you know what you doing by sharing the info of what every thing does, from the switches to how your safety devices work. Also you can tell this is a womans truck, way more organized and cleaner than my truck ever was. Mine looked like a cleaned up dorm room. Keep that rubber side down and be safe!

If you want to learn about the industry, the good, the bad and ugly, the Smart Trucking channel is about the best source for new drivers. It’s not perfect but it’s good info there.

    I am a huge Western Star Truck fan!!! I had a 4964 EX with a 600 Cat, 18 sp, double frame, 46,000 lb rears, 12,500 lb front axle, 373 gear ratio, 262" Wheelbase with Hendrickson Air Ride suspension. It rode like a Cadillac or a Royals Royce. I loved that truck. I had a swivel front seats and a 76" walk-in sleeper. Mine was the 2000 Constellation Series. Good luck with your truck. I feel you will not want to drive anything else after the Westernstar trucks. I do not.

    I wouldn't say daytime running lights or "driving lights" are only for cool looks, they're more as a daily substitute for the headlights so the car would still be more easily noticeable, but you won't wear out the headlight bulbs so quickly.

      DLRs are also mandatory as standard equipment in most Countries.
      As someone in Canada, the visibility DRLs make, even in clear daytime, is magnitudes better. Drives me nuts when I encounter an older vehicle or a vehicle where someone disabled the fuse/re-coded the system.

    Your trailer brake lever when pulled supplies air to your service brake on the trailer to aid in maneuvering and testing the brakes. The red knob exhausts the air from the brake chambers on the trailer and applies the spring brakes and dosen't let the trailer roll away.

    • @ShelbyHBTM
      @ShelbyHBTM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still don’t trust the radar systems in these trucks. I’ve heard too many stories from these things picking up overpasses and slamming in the brakes. They are great for cars, but the distance it has to watch on trucks is just too far and it has to be too sensitive.

    In my short time driving truck, I've only ever dumped the airbags one time trying to connect to a trailer. As long as you keep at least an inch or two off the ground with the trailer legs it's not going to damage any equipment Plus it makes it easier for the next driver to hook up to the same trailer.

      Most have them, but some drivers/lease ops abuse them and burn trailer brakes instead of trailer brakes.
      That’s why some companies don’t spec their trucks with trailer brake controls. Brake jobs add up the expenses in short order.
