I think pilot super sports came before ps4s and they aren’t nearly as good especially in wet and cold
Stiffer sidewall though, just different compromises than the 4S.
PSS were the predescessor of the cup2, I think at least, so more the Track Tyre direction instead of road like the ps4s

@@HondaEnjoyer12 Yeah but a stiffer sidewall tyre (like a track day tyre) is inherently worse in the wet and better in the dry. It's not a free lunch.
The BMW star-marked M-car PS4S are tuned closer to Cup 2s than stock PS4S, so they give up some wet performance to get *more* dry performance (check out Jonathon Benson's Tyre Reviews on "Should you use OEM tyres?").
While the older PSS ALL have the stiffer sidewall like that to give a more precise flickable feeling with more feedback than the 4S, the compromise being a tyre that's worse in cold and wet (UK? 😂) but more dynamic in warm and dry.
The Japanese market road tyres like Potenza S007A and Potenza RE004 have the same hard sidewall as the track day Potenza RE71RS even though they are road tyres. This gives better steering feel and better transient response, as well as a shoulder that doesn't roll over.
But S007A (with this stiff sidewall) doesn't meet EU low rolling resistance eco requirements, so there's the Potenza Sport road tyre made in Europe with a softer sidewall and lower rolling resistance (and better wet performance).
[Indeed the RE71RS track day tyre doesn't meet the EU rules either, hence there's the Potenza Race track day tyre made in Europe.]
As far as I understand, softer sidewall = better longitudinal grip (e.g., A052 have a modern softer construction despite being a track day tyre, so that's why they are so mighty in braking), stiffer sidewall = better lateral grip (in dry). But in wet conditions, a softer sidewall (or taller profile tyre) conforms to the road better and generates more lateral grip.
Anyway, it's not fair to say PSS aren't nearly as good. Many people prefer the stiffer sidewall and better turn-in and steering feel compared to the PS4S.
Then there's the PS4 which has an even softer construction than the PS4S -- by Jonathon Benson's Tyre Reviews testing, the PS4 is faster *again* in the wet than PS4S. Since tyre design is a compromise between different attributes (PSS/PSC2 towards dry, PS4S in the middle, PS4/PS5 towards wet).
If you like instant response and sharp turn-in from a stiff sidewall then the other road tyres like JDM Bridgestones and Goodyear Eagle F1 Super Sport are probably better than most of the Michelins (especially PS4/PS5), but of the Michelins the PSS & M-car PS4S are the better ones.

If you want great dry performance and feel you would buy a semi slick instead of a pss anyway so I dont really see the point of them
