    OK - you guys really helped me with more information to tie down my equipment. I am a grandma who has some big equipment to transport down the highway! I used to use straps to tie down my Kubota tractor but learned that chains are safer & more secure. Nice job on your explanation to tie down the loader as well. I appreciate the help.

    Thanks Hank. Perfect timing again. I just borrowed a trailer to haul my tractor and I made a video so everyone will get a good laugh, ha. I liked the informative demonstration by you and B. I know this is not talking about the heavy load to carry on the trailer but remember to clamp down or remove any small items that you have in tractor pouches or tool boxes. I've seen rags, pamphlets, drink bottles etc fly off tractors that the hauler totally didn't think about b/c they were focused on the tractor and the implements (which is good) but remember those small loose things. It would be totally bad to have someone's windshield mangled b/c of a wrench that flew off a tractor's platform. One guy must have been working on his tractor to tighten his chains and left a bar on the tractor bed and guess where it went. Nicely done video by the dynamic tractor duo.

    Years ago, after watching and being victim to loading farm tractors, equipment, vehicles, etc. onto trailers, and seeing the loading operation, not so much the tie down portion, I came up with a solution that has worked for many, many years. If you get this part right, it will lessen the wear and tear on your nerves, as well as stopping any loading accidents, which could impact your tie down operation. I went to Tractor Supply and picked up two swivel jacks. They come with a weld plate already attached, and they lock at 90 degrees on both horizontal planes, and 90 degrees to the vertical plane. I welded one jack on each rear corner, about 1 foot from the end of the trailer for me, which provided enough clearance to clear the handles, and to clear any part of the frame. I pull the pins, turn the jacks vertical, place a wooden block or two as needed under each jack, and crank the handle to push the jack leg down to the block to support the rear of the trailer. You can then drive your equipment on the trailer, the trailer will not lift up the front of the trailer, or your shocks, or risk coming un hooked and damaging your tailgate.

      That is a really good idea. I have seen that setup in action before. The dovetail on my trailer doesn't cause the tongue to lift as much as a regular straight deck or deckover, though. But that issue is for sure why I make sure to chock the wheels, put the parking brake on, put the truck in 4wd, and make sure I am on solid, level ground.

    This may have already been mentioned, me being an old flatbed trucker I noticed that you did run your chain through the stake pocket which is the correct way, but you should always have the hook on the top of the pocket not the bottom, if the chain should come slack the hook could fall down (gravity) always hang the hook on the top of the pocket or rail so if the chain does become slack the hook will still be hanging on the pocket....again gravity. Great video guys!

    Good info! I need to get better at that. I think balancing the load itself is equally if not more important peice that you didnt talk about. A thing called negative tongue weight is a term I became very familiar with when I almost flipped towing a tractor for the first time. In part because of my lack of knowledge and experience and 2. I trusted the Guy who improperly balanced the load on the trailer. We thought we knew what we were doing but we were wrong. Fish tailing down the rd at 55mph well I was like Carrie Underwood Jesus take the wheel. LOL. Fortunately I didnt hit the brakes I gave it gas instead and recovered, but very scary. Thanks good vid!

    The weight that is stamped on the tractor is the weight of the tractor only. The attachments are not added to the weight. You have to add them in. For instance. If you add the front loader you have to add the proper weight by what size front loader you have installed. 1 yards, 1.5 yard 3 yard. Whatever the correct size is. Then the back is the same. Is a hoe ram or is a backhoe being attached. Then on top of that. All the attachments must be tied down separately from the tractor. You did a good video. You are putting people on the right track. All ways check DOT regulations. They are very strict.

    Very good job. It's not going anywhere. Since you asked how to make it even better, I have a few suggestions. I would have a D ring on that front frame so your ratchet can connect directly to it (less chain/potential failure points=win.) You might also want to tie down (ideally) or at least block 2 of the 4 tires. You can always add a permanent, custom front chuck (4" high?) on that deck (if it's what you primarily tow all the time- maybe in front of the front right, and rear right wheels. Not sure if you were using a weight distributing hitch or not but they can be helpful. Place a rubber mat between any and all surfaces that will rub on the chain. Spray paint the specific links on the chains where you always connect them as future reference points- again, if you load this truck regularly. Run tie downs on each of those steps. Now for my top tip- fabricate a nice, strong lip on the front of that deck that the shovel can basically slide/lock into. This will add incredible strength overall tie down design- think in terms of front, lateral and upside down. In trucking- anything goes. Also, running a strong chain dead center mass from underneath that ties into the frame and cinch that down too.

    When you wrap your hook ends into the stake pocket, make sure they are hanging right side up. If that chain gets a bit loose, gravity will help unhook them. Hook them the other way around then run them around the stake pocket....OR, fab you up some quality stake pocket D-rings and hook the chain to itself.

    Also remember axle ratings are not the capacity of the trailer. A lot of people think that is the case when it’s not. Ex: my trailer has 2 7,000lb axles. So according to the manufacturer it’s a 14k trailer however, you have to take the weight of the trailer out of that 14k. So I have a 14k rated trailer but the trailer weighs 4,550lbs so my actual load capacity is 9,450. I know there’s a lot of people with homemade trailers so they don’t have that info tag, but maybe this will help someone.....also instead of wrapping the chain around and having the hook like he had it, put it so the hook is at the top so if something happens the hook will stay hooked to the trailer.

    One of the main things I always try to consider when hooking a chain to a trailer no matter what your hauling is "gravity"... Think of it like this .. let's say your hauling a car and you have it good and tied down .. when you hit a bump is gravity going to loosen your load if a chain is hooked from the bottom of a bracket and you hit a big enough bump is your chain going to fall off ??? I always hook the chain from the top then go underneath the bracket and then to the item in tow

  • @stanleyjohnston5876
    @stanleyjohnston5876 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @williamgaines9784
    @williamgaines9784 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The D ring on the front is a single point. Having 2 chains on it, regardless of how heavy the chains are or ring is, is a single point attachment. That is little different from just looping a single chain or strap through the ring. You need a separate anchor point on the front.
    Separate anchor points on trailer and load, front and rear. Talk to a wrecker driver about how to secure a rolling load onto the bed.

    I think you should have four separate chains hooked to four separate points. Just saying! Also I don’t care for the way you put the hook in the pocket because the chain could fall off if the chain became loose. I believe you should always have the chain hooked to the top of the pocket!

    Two things that I have seen happen: One is to put a 2 5/16 trailer on 2 inch hitch. It seems obvious, but the trailer will come off and really mess up back of truck. The other is tire inflation. If your tires are underinflated, the trailer can start swaying left to right.

    When hooking direct, which is one end on load and the other attached to the trailer, the working load limit is half of the chain or binder. If hooked indirect, which is across the load, the the working load limit is the full capacity of the chain or binder. The total working load limit must be equal to at least half of the weight of what you are hauling. And always be sure to get your load limits from the lowest rated item, which if all chains and binders are the same size, the lowest rating should be the chain.
    And please, always have a vehicle that is heavy enough to stop the loaded trailer

    A modern half ton could tow that setup there. Most are rated to 10k or more now. Just make sure you’re drivetrain warranty is intact!
    Having a good trailer with tandem 5k axles and good brakes is perfect for the kioti ck10 series and a few implements.
    But over 10k, you’re definitely in gooseneck territory.

    you zoomed in on the front of the tractor where he made the D ring but you never zoomed in on the back where the three-point hitch was

    Do your homework on Chains , Binders, Straps, since I have found when I haul skidsteers the Cat has suspension so it tends to bounce and work loose where as my Kubota has solid frame and once its tied down its on

    DOT requires 4 chains for a tractor; not 3. Also, the FEL is a separate attachment so it requires 2 chains on it. Any optional attachments (box blade, land plane, back hoe, etc) need to have 2 chains securing them as well.

      A good dealer selling tractors and trailers is very important. The service you going to need in the future is very important . All the implements are added weight. Buying local can help tremendously .

      Me too. Good thing my title is what is actually what the video discusses and we put that picture in the video to drive home the point about safely loading tractors onto trailers so no one would think that about this video
