- Hi guys, I'd like to share with you my first impressions upon hearing the Era 100 and Era 300 for the first time. The Era 100 was tested on it's own and in stereo pair. The Era 300 was playing Atmos music on its own and also demo'ed as surround speakers in a full Sonos Arc and dual sub setup.
This is by no means my final review as I have not tested them extensively in my own studio and have not spent enough time with them. Watch out for upcoming final full reviews soon!

Peter - You are THE Sonos Expert! Your guidance is so helpful in deciding to upgrade to Era 300’s for my surrounds. Can’t wait to watch the follow up videos. Getting “the answer” upfront in the video is such a gift to viewers. I still watch all the way thru, but I can think critically about how the content applies to me, instead of waiting to understand what is the point.

I ordered a pair for my surrounds as well. However. The speakers will be placed in a corner in my ceilings. Any thoughts on being able to have them face downward ?

Great video as always. Just preordered two era 300s for rear surround replacements, ( I’m currently using sonos ones). I’ve been waiting for sonos to make Dolby Atmos speakers that I can use for surrounds. I currently have the ARC and Sub, and luckily my living room ceiling isn’t that high and are flat. So shouldn’t have issues with sounds bouncing everywhere. I’m happy you said how amazing the 300s sound as surrounds. Can’t wait.

I have the One SL's for my rears. I'm also considering upgrading to 2 Era 300's as my rears. Even though the rears don't care too much of the overall sound!!! At almost $1200 including 2 stands *OUCH*! I may wait to see what others have to say about them as rears before I drop another $1200 on my surround system.

Peter, you are the best! Exactly the answer I was looking for. I have a home theater setup with arc, sub gen 3 and ones as surrounds. I should add the 300s to maximize my setup. Now, I just have to convince the other half to let me upgrade. 😂

Easier to ask for forgiveness , than it is is to ask for permission. If you can pay your bills on time and afford the ERA300's , ask for forgiveness after you get them set up. ;)

Good choice! The difference won’t be great between the ones and the era100. I can confirm after extensive testing.

Finally replaced my Play:1s yesterday (convinced the wife as a Father’s Day gift 😅) for the rears and I gotta say I can hear a big difference. Much fuller sound stage. Much richer and cleaner at the same eq settings. Arc+sub gen 3+Era 100s 👌🏽

Great video as always, thank you! And thank you for the upfront summary. I still watch through, but it's nice to know the outcome upfront. I was ready to pull the trigger on pre-ordering a few days ago but held off and I'm glad I did. You summed things up perfectly for what I wanted to know, and I'll wait for the 500's to come out. I sort of want to still buy the 100's and 300's, as I'm a big Sonos fan, but I just don't know how I would use them. I still would like to see some sort of high-end speaker, and some sort of home theater switching unit so that you could connect a bunch of 4k/120 sources to a Sonos home theater setup. I would also like to see a competitor to the Nakamichi Dragon soundbar and surround setup.
Very cool. And yes. I currently have too many Sonos speakers already. More than I have a need for them. But I want to keep testing and making these videos so I end up buying them anyway.

@@PeterPee Surrounds. I have Sonos one as surround right now with the arc and sub gen 3. I always wanted something fuller as surrounds. Sonos five are an overkill for the size of my living room so I think that the 300 hit the sweet spot. Plus Dolby atoms of course.

Great stuff as always Peter. As I have an Arc with the sub and currently have 2 Ones as rear surrounds, it definately looks like the era 300’s would be good upgrades on those.
Yes, that route would be a definite upgrade.
Upgrade for movies? How much power do you need for rears?
Love to see new products and upgrades. I won’t be upgrading any time soon though because my Beam (Gen 2) + Sub (Gen 3) + 2xOne SLs system still exceeds excellence for my small apartment
I have the same set-up; but, with a Gen 1 Beam. It sounds fantastic already. I imagine the Era 100 do sound better; but, not $500 better over my current rear surround One SLs.
I agree. The incremental over the ones with a era 100 pair won’t be that high.
Think I’ll keep my One SLs for rears to go with my Arc and Sub Gen 3. Would love the 300s for Atmos but they’re too big in size for us to live with as rears. Maybe some day they’ll put some upward firing sound in a smaller size. Thank you Peter.
Yes, they are significantly bigger than the Ones/Era 100. But smaller than the Fives. Quite a lot smaller.

I got my Era 100 on Friday and I really like it. It sounds more powerful than its predecessor One, the fuller Midrange is for me the biggest difference. I use it in the kitchen, but am thinking about another place. Design and sound 👍🏼

You already have the Ones then I don't necessarily think you need the Era100s.

For me as an Android phone user the Bluetooth is a game changer, if I am listening to audiobooks or podcasts I just want to cast it to the speaker, that outweighs the advantages of the 5 over the 300.
Yeah, for spoken word, the Era will do just about fine as the Fives.

I’m looking forward to upgrading my pair of Ones as surround rears with the Era 300s, but I don’t feel like I need to rush out and do it right away. The great thing about Sonos is knowing those Ones will still have a new use once I replace them as rears though!

My setup is Arc, sub and Ones as rear. I’m still not convinced that the Era300 can improve the Atmos by a lot which justify the cost. Looking forward for your review with the Era300 setup.
I can't tell for sure until I try it out in my room. I don't think we are going to get 50% improvements... So have to manage expectations there. I am thinking you will get a taller soundscape but you might not notice it right away kind of levels.

I love the Sonos ones.. so can’t wait to upgrade under the Sonos upgrade discount program to the Era 100s for stereo music and rear surrounds. The only upgrade hurdle is not having Era100 speaker holders for the existing Sonos one official stands.
I just won’t upgrade if I have to buy new speaker stands.
Yes, I think there could be third party companies making adaptors.

I’m think I’m taking a fairly common sense approach. I have currently an arc, sub gen 3 and 2 play ones as surrounds. I used a discount code for Sonos bridge. To replace a play one in another room. I’ll hold out for reviews on using the era 300 as surround speakers then decide if it’s the right change. If not it’s only £381 for a great speaker

I'm looking to add surrounds to my Arc + Sub3. I don't watch a ton of movies or game, but I appreciate reasonable sound when I do watch. I can't justify the cost of the Era300's. The OneSL's are heavily discounted here right now, as per the title, I can get a pair of:
Era100's for $750AUD
OneSL's for $372AUD
My living area is open plan and reasonably large, and the placement won't be behind, but rather beside my seating positions due to positions of power and doors etc. These will stay as surrounds so the SL's lack of mic etc doesn't bother me, nor the added functionality of the 100's as it won't be utilised.

Peter being the era 100’s have two speakers in them aren’t they more comparable to the play:3 as a replacement? I’d love to see that comparison. From what I’m seeing era 100’s are really the replacement for the play:3’s the era 300’s are a whole new category (the Sonos 4’s so to speak) and the five is still untouched.
Fives untouched yes.There should be a Era 500 on the horizon as I see it. The Era 300s in terms of size is close to the Play:3 than the Ones. In terms of bass drivers, the Ones have 1, Play:3 has two. Era 100 has 1. So I am still more inclined to think of the era 100 as Ones replacement. Although the sound quality is subjectively better than the Play:3s from 12 years ago already.
Peter you are master of your craft, thank you for your reviews. You are the reason why I bought the Arc.
If I'm streaming movies through Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video will the ERA300 be much of an audio upgrade over the One's, from an Atmos perspective? I find the streaming services a bit lacking with Atmos, even the movies that are labeled Atmos, don't typically provide an immersive experience that Atmos claims you will experience. I find that 99% of the sound comes from the ARC, you get an occasional sound from the Ones. I've never experienced Atmos sound from the ARC upfiring speakers or side firing speakers, IE sound that is above me or goes from in front of me, over my head, to behind me. BTW the SONOS app tells me I'm getting Atmos when I'm playing an Atmos labeled movie.
Once again thank you for your reviews, you are one of the few people on TH-cam that I seek out advice from. You are an audiophile master.
Atmos from almost all upward firing reflected atmos speakers are going to come across as subtle. It won't be very clearly from the ceiling. The ERA 300s sound like they are more of the Arc, but note that the upward firing tweeter in the Sonos Era 300 is horn loaded so they could come across as a little louder and more directional.

You'll want to look at your "System" settings in the Sonos S2 App and look at the ARC speaker to see whether you are getting lossy DD+ Atmos or the full lossless Atmos experience. I have a Sony TV which only ever plays Atmos in DD+ lossy format from the TV apps. But I realised using a modern 4k Apple TV allows me to get full lossless Atmos through some streaming services. The extra substance and clarity delivered in the sound stage by lossless Atmos is quite noticeable and worth the price of a device like a 4k Apple TV in my opinion for anyone who is sensitive to sound quality.
@@djt6546 Thanks do you think the Arcana Fury would make a sound difference? IE: Lossy vs Lossless for streaming service. I've been debating if I should buy one. I the Nvidia Shield to stream all my content.
@@anastasiabeaverhausen391 I have no experience of Arcana Fury as I am already using E-ARC connection on my Sony TV. It's strange why the inbuilt Apps on such a modern TV won't process lossless ATMOS, when my externally connected Apple TV will. Hopefully Peter will answer...
I'm curious about how the 300s will perform in a stereo pair with sub mini vs a pair if Fives for a music-focused system. I really love the styling of these new units, but I've never been crazy about how the Fives look in portrait mode.

I only have the beam Gen 2 but heard rumors atmos surrounds would release soon so I’m happy I waited. Not happy with how much they’ll be but I’m sure it’ll be worth it down the line
The good thing is that Sonos retains its value very well over time. So the total cost of ownership over the years till you sell it isn’t so bad.

Yes. It will be a massive difference. If you move to the era 100 I won’t recommend. But to era 300 yes.

Wondering if upgrading from ones to era 300s is significant enough to justify $900 if used mainly for surrounds. Knowing surrounds are mainly just sound effects in movies. Thanks for all the info!
Assuming you’re using beam gen 2 or arc then yes. The Atmos effects will be enhanced. But.. 900 bucks is hard to stomach
My home has a high ceiling which is not flat. I really was hoping for sonos to provide an option to place discrete height speakers adding to my existing arc+fives(surround)+sub2 (upgraded to fives from sonos1 after your review).
Currently.... Sonos doesn't have that. I think there are some prototypes running around which allows for Ones to be mounted in the ceiling. But that requires Sonos to allow for extra speakers to be used as dedicated Atmos channels. So might not happen soon.

No. I would still say that two Sonos ones is better than a single era100.

Hi Peter. Can you connect a single Era 300 speaker to your home theater setup to use them as a rear? I am deaf in one ear and don’t really need the second rear speaker. Alternatively, can you combine an Era 300 with a Sonos One?

No you can’t. For surrounds you need two. And they need to be the same.
Looking forward to seeing/ hearing the 300s as surrounds with the beam gen 2, I have beam gen 2, sub gen 3 and ones set up at the moment, would love the arc but can't get approval from the Mrs due to its size, hoping the 300s will give me the Atmos I feel im missing with the beam gen 2
Yes it will do that. Adds two actual physical drivers firing upwards.
The only issue i have is that ERAs wont have the Sonos wifi internal network only the wifi 6. Cant wait for your review.
Yep. Sonos net is not supported anymore. It might not be an issue. Wait for an upcoming episode where I discuss this.
Hey Peter. I’m using my 1s as rear surround and considering replacing them with the 300s. However, they sit on a shelf so the upward firing speakers would hit the shelf instead of bouncing off the ceiling. Do you know if there’s settings in the app to compensate for that?
No. The angle is fixed and software won’t change that. The directivity is also high as the waves are guided through a deep horn. Not ideal to put in a shelf. Will be addressing this in the next video.

I went to Pre-Order them yesterday, but it was already back ordered into June for the Era 300s. So I decided instead that I am just going to hope that they are also sending inventory to Best Buy and will try to buy some on launch day.

Currently i have sonos fives as rears, when listening to music they seems a little bit loud, and when playing some games, sound effect in front of character still coming from behind, maybe this is called overkill but the overall experience is excellent(especially music playing). Now i consider moving fives to another room as stereo and for music only, then adding era300 as rears to experience a more precise game playing, hopefully music experiecne will not feel noticeablely difference.

You can change the volume of the surrounds when playing music in the settings!

Thanks Peter,,,as many others - I have been waiting to hear from your review on the latest SONOS speakers. So I am already invested in the Sonos infrastructure but was considering buying a set of Fives to just listen to music. However I have had them in my cart waiting for the new release of the 300’s. I am still thinking that the Fives are better for just plain old stereo but will wait for your hopeful review comparing the Fives to the new 300’s.

Agreed. For music. You just can’t find a better speaker for size and sound. I DJ on the side and own QSC’s so bass and mids/highs very important to me to recreate same sound when just home and streaming music. The five nails it.

Here's hoping that content producers begin to take greater advantage of spatial audio in all of its various forms. Some material uses this feature effectively but there is a ton of audiovisual content that lags behind the technology.

I have to test them myself in my rum and on my terms.
I'm curious and hope they aren't a letdown.

I've heard that the Era doesn't let you control the treble channels with the app like the Arc does.

Hey Peter, thanks for the video! When do you think they will launch the era 500? I want to upgrade my atmos setup but im very hesitant upgrading my one's to the 300 now if the 500 isnt that far away.
I am pretty sure it is going to be far away... I believe Sonos won't want to cannibalise the Fives at the moment. They are still relatively young.
I’m thinking to buy the Era 300 for my ARC rear speaker setup. My only concern is ….. my couch is against the wall and I don’t know if I should mount the era 300 on the wall or buy the stands.
I’d go for the stands. More flexible should you decide to move them to another part of the house.

As surrounds they will be better. But the fives aren’t shabby either because fives sound richer and fuller. The era300 as surrounds will give a lot more immersion though. Tough choice.
Hi Peter, now I just purchased a beam gen 2 home theater setup and I like them. The beam gen 2 is still in the period that I could return. I want the dolby atmos. What do you think? Upgrade the beam gen 2 to arc? Or upgrade the 2 ones to a pair of era 300. I have limited budget, can you help me out? Thank you
This is a tough choice. Very close in terms of what you get with either setup. I’m going to suggest that you keep the beam gen 2 and then add the era 300s. The 2 ones can then be redeployed as music setup somewhere else.

I assume you get this conclusion maybe because the up-firing speaker on Era 300s might be more powerful than the Arc since they are new. Also, the Arc will be facing an upgrade since it's already several years old. The mini sub I have, can I use it in 2 different configuration? Let's say one for 5.1 system, and one for another two Sonos ones music listening configuration in kitchen since we are very close to each other.

Will this be good for computer speaker? As there is type c to 3.5mm, will there is delay in sound output like Sonos Five?
Yes, there will be a delay. I will address this in an upcoming video.
If you have an ARC, are upwards surrounds needed? Would the Sonos 1 or Era 100 be as good as the 300s as surrounds in an atmos setup with the ARC?
The Era 300s will give ANOTHER 2 more channels of Atmos.
Is all atmos content recorded in 7.2.4? Are the channels algorithmically created at playtime or is all atmos content recorded at a standard number of channels
Sorry, to answer my own question. Atmos content is recorded as objects and their position, not as channels. The atmos playback device maps these objects to the number of channels that are setup. So, more is usually going to be better so long as the decoder can use them
Peter great reviews. Have you any insight into AirPlay not working on Sonos speakers? My beam gen 1 and Sonos 1 gen 1 speakers are both giving me a pop up saying unable to AirPlay to respective devices. The Sonos app still identified these speakers as one THH at you can air play to but just gives that pop up when I try. I’ve rest the speaker and added them back in the app and airplay works and goes out again this has been happening for about 5 months now
