I’m here because I just discovered that the history of Jamaican rice and peas comes from the Ghanaian dish Waakye. Most Afro Jamaicans come from the Akan tribe in Ghana through the slave trade. Slaves were transported from Ghana’s Gold Coast and cooked this dish to remind them of home after they were transported. The slave masters would only allow them to take Sunday as a day of rest from work, so Jamaican rice & peas (Waakye) is traditionally eaten on Sundays. We also put coconut milk in our rice. 🇯🇲 🇬🇭

Yeah I notice that, I can't believe I am 57 and only notice not lol.. I never heard a Ghanian say anything about this. Because I work with so many Ghanians from Akan peoples..We have Jamaican and Ghanian chef in work Canteen. It's strange Ghanians don't even mention the similarities. My parents from St Vincent and we cook it too. Jamaicans tend to forget Akan people were taken all over the Caribbean. I have some Akan in my Dna, but I have more Dna from Nigeria.. somewhere. I remember years ago my sister telling me she went to a Ghanian woman house and her food was so sweet. This women remind me of my auntie who check the rice and peas before it cooks.. I leave it and I work perfect for me lol..

Why don't Jamaicans ever say Caribbean Rice and peas lol..🤔I guess there are some slight differences. My mum never used coconut milk. Not sure if it's a Vincentian thing.

In the Carolina low country and sea islands, black eye peas and rice is called Hoppin' John. It's a must eat on New Year's Day. Descendants of West Africans in the diaspora came from the same people and brought traditions with them that they carry on to this day.

I'm happy I joined your channel. I just found out that I am of the Ghanaian descent on my father's side of my family. You know in America a lot of African Americans do not know their heritage. I'm excited to learn about the foods of my heritage. I would love to learn to make them. I'm so glad I found you.

Pls is waakye, the coloured rice and beans? I watched a video on 'Chi and family' channel where the couple were goshing about how good the food is. So I'm here to learn. Is the coloured beans and rice the wakaaye?(was thinking it is the stew). Does it go with any stew of choice? What's the black stew pls? I recently prepared the south African very delicious Chakalaka and can't wait to try wakaaye.

Thank you for this video. My co worker introduced me to Waakye Rice. So I wanted to make my own. However I did not cook my black eye peas long enough. So I added more water and then my rice became mushy. I will be more careful next time. I want to make everything you have on that plate. It look so good. But one thing at a time. What are the best spices would you recommend to adding if I wanted to.? Also I thought about cooking the rice in the Waakye water with seasoning and added the peas later when they are done. I would love your feedback. Thank you for sharing.
