The Kerala Literature Festival is probably one of the best literary events in the country by quite a margin. We need these spaces in our country where opinions are discussed and dissected. Let the country listen to everything out there and form their own opinion. Having worked in Kerala for 2 years, I will always be an advocate for the kind of tolerance that exists in the state. I feel that such conversations are really eye-opening and go a long way in providing people with an alternative opinion and also help in busting the political hegemony by any one particular group(left or right). The entire shift from the left to the right in the political sphere of our country did not happen in just a day. There were a lot of things being suppressed by the left which finds its voice now, 75 years later. I believe any society ultimately manifests its core ideological character through an unbiased learning of history. You cannot keep a deeply religious society like India away from its cultural roots by suppressing facts. If it happens in the course of such honest conversations, we can really avoid the emergence of hyper-nationalistic elements, which too are dangerous for the sustenance of the secular fabric of the nation!

If there was not a single book written for over 60 years, it only means one thing - the subject was not worth writing about. But today, the BJP and RSS combo needs as much materials as possible to convince and cajole the different segments of Indian citizens to uphold their retrograde and divisive Hindutva principles. And so, they are using Savarkar, an atheist to propagate their philosophy across. If Savarkar is at one end, they are appropriating Dr. Ambedkar at the other end. This is their political game. RSS think tank should be behind this.
Vikram Sampath's justification of Savarkar's Hindutva that it is more about cultural attachment to the Indian soil rather than theological would have made sense had we had such impression on seeing the action and speeches of today's Hindutva propagators. Vikram Sampath should declare that today's Hindutva is not what Savarkar intended. If not we will suspect that Vikram Sampath is colluding with today's Hindutva elements to serve their agenda.
For an average Malayalee or Tamilian, I am a mix of both, we were never bothered about Savarkar till Hindutvavadis started playing their ugly games. For Savarkar's brilliance, he could have come up with a completely scientific and non religious set of principles and philosophies and writings to unite Indian people. There need not have been any superiority complex that subjugates or treat fellow Indians unequally. That was his mistake and that's the last and lasting impression about him. So, whatever he was in the beginning has been obliterated by himself with his new avatar.

Every month Rahul Gandhi utter some nonesense abt Savarkar because of fear. And Savarkar is very much relevant even today and may be in future than the time he lived. It is just the nehruvuan marxist historians avoided many of our revolutionaries like madanlal dhingra, sachindranath sanyal, batukeswar dutt, barinder ghosh, Rashbehari bose etc. They only highlighted congress and gandhiyan movements. It will change in future.

From this conversation an impression is given only Savarkar was incarcerated. In fact, there were hundreds of others who also faced similar torture. But none of them apologized except Savarkar.

First of all it wasn't an apology. Even today when court give death penalty one can reachout president for clemency. Similarly it was a clemency petition. Many like sachindranath sanyal, Balgangadhar tilak have written similar petitions.

9:15 Dr. Sampath I have come across all these names when I was studying history at school level in Maharashtra... we were never taught at SSC that only INC contributed to India's freedom struggle. I am disappointed with the CBSE board now that you mention that you never came across these names before you started your journey of writing on Savarkar.

44:31 I personally believe that Hindu can be a rashtra and yet we can have state that is secular. It is a theoretical possibility that we can have multi-nation state... the Hindu nation, Muslim nation and many other minor nations can coexist in India that is Bharat. Here nation simply means a community that it more or less homogeneous.
