The movie "Spartacus" stuck with me as well, and it helped inspire decades of a casual, non academic but extensive interest in these ancient people. I remain impressed by that film. How much did Spartacus know about Hannibal? There seems to be some similarities.
I took Prof. Strauss's undergraduate course on ancient Rome more than 30 years ago. He is a phenomenal lecturer and teacher.
