Joey Howard (current live bassist) is an absolute monster too. His work on Hayley’s solo stuff is INCREDIBLE! And for Ian, he’s a fellow Antigua lover as well.
paramore is just a whole complete band, everything is well thought of, arranged, and produced. i can't believe there use to be so many people thought it was a solo project for hayley.
Ironically, Hayley's actual solo project, Petals For Armor, sounds way different. It's not quite for me. And I do feel like her vocals on This Is Why (the entire album) have influence from the way she sang on Petals for Armor.
if you looked at their original contract, they only signed hayley. the label only cared about her. the fact that the fans couldn’t see past it is disappointing.
There’s a bass fill in the last chorus of Still Into You that gives it so much movement. It’s descending the scale following Hayley’s vocal melody when she sings “yeah, after all this time…” and the way it locks in with Ilan Rubin’s drumming is so good. I urge anyone to go look up full-band backing tracks to their albums (no vocals). Especially Self-Titled and After Laughter. There’s a lot of really great, sophisticated stuff happening behind Hayley’s (obviously really great) vocal tracks.
Would love to see a video like this for Queens of the Stone Age. Michael Schumann is one of the absolute best rock bassists alive. Like seriously hes incredible. The bassline for "I appear missing" is a masterpiece. There's also loads of grealty underappreciated basslines early in their discography, such as; Mexicola, Give the Mule what he wants, and in the Fade. QOTSA is generally considered a guitar band but they have had some incredible basslines
I was fortunate enough to be in the room for some of the After Laughter sessions, and the Caught In The Middle bassline is one that sticks in my head to this day! The energy in the room while JMJ was playing that one was infectious!
Paramore's actually had 5 bass players record on their albums across all 6. Lucio Rubino played all but one song on their debut, Brian Weaver played on Riot, Jeremy Davis played on BNE and S/T, and then JMJ and Brian Robert Jones.
I loved the video! One of my fave bass parts from Paramore that wasn't covered is from the song "Fake Happy" off of After Laughter. The bass during the verses is absolutely GROOVIN and the slides are so sweet.
I've been a massive Paramore fan for years now, but I gotta admit I haven't really stopped to appreciate the amazing bass part they have. Thanks for that!
Paramore has so many fun riffs to play on both guitar and bass, Jeremy and Josh Farro/Taylor York work so well together but I do agree with Sharon in that Misery Business, CrushCrushCrush and That's What You Get should've been included, those ones are awesome and for another band I honestly think it could be cool to see one on The Hollies. Eric Haydock (One of the first guys to use a Fender Bass VI) and Bernie Calvert all absolutely kill it
Also I second what other commenters have said: Coheed & Cambria and Rancid need features on this channel, as well as Matt Rubano (formerly of Taking Back Sunday). That dude’s resumé is stacked.
You guys are so fun to watch. Love these videos. Love hearing stuff I might not have heard or considered listening to. Starting on my SBL journey very soon (from zero)!
I agree! The bass on the suffering is amazing, I remember My friend and I as kids would sit there waiting for the slow dial up to load, we would sit there while it buffered forever, just to hear that song lol
I don’t understand how you guys haven’t done a Peter Hook episode yet?! If you’re branching out into more punk-y stuff too there NEEDS to be a Peter Hook episode!!!
I’ve got a few suggestions for you… Graham Maby: the album Look Sharp by Joe Jackson has had a prominent position in my playlist for 45 years primarily due to the phenomenal bass lines of Graham Maby. Paul Denman: the entire Sade catalog is loaded with beautifully crafted bass lines created by Paul Denman. Ale Villareal: The Warning has become one of my favorite bands of recent years. Although she’s still a teenager, she has created so many great bass lines in their last 3 albums, and I can’t wait to hear what the future holds.
Very cool episode! Paramore is one of those bands I've known about but never paid much attention to but I'll definitely be putting them in rotation on Spotify
Besides these badass Paramore bass lines, there are two more things to love about the video: Ian's Serek bass is just gorgeous. 🤍 And the way Sharon's face melts when the bass sound of Cruel hits in. 🫠 Love you guys. 🧡
Have a look at MISA from Band Maid. They are prolific, so there's plenty to choose from. She's able to switch from pick to slap seemlessly, and walks the fine line between busy and over-playing.
Nikki Wire of Manic Street Preachers is an underrated bassist. The title track for Journal For Plague Lovers, 4st 7lb and Archives Of Pain are examples. Adam Clayton of U2 does a bass solo for Gloria
This was a great episode, guys! I’ve been learning how to play bass and as a third song for me to learn there’s Brick by Boring Brick. Such a challenging song! But really fun to play.
That G&L bass is AMAZIING, love the L2000s. Thanks for this lesson! I've been playing guitar for years and I finally began my bassistic journey. I love Paramore so this video is perfect for me. Thanks!
Yes, I was hoping you would do a Paramore video. Jeremy is a killer bass player and a big influence for me. I was very fortunate to support Paramore with my band in Dublin back in 2010 and watch Jeremy absolutely kill it from side stage. It must have been so hard to narrow down what songs to pick. All I Wanted is another great song, and 100% agree with Sharon, The Only Exception is the killer balled.
I think the bass on The Self Titled album is probably the best example what happens when you have a producer bring the very best out of a player, would love to hear a one of the lengthy podcast interviews with JMJ like you’ve done with Chris Chaney and Sean Hurley!
I’m late to watching this video! Was on a school field trip in the woods with no internet-good times. I really enjoyed this video as I’ve been wanting to learn some Paramore bass lines. All good picks on the video. There is a fun slide in the song “Now” around 2:50 into the song. I’m not sure if there would be enough content for a video on utilizing bass for slides. Another fun example is in the DMB song “Busted Stuff” around 2:30. Finally, the bass line throughout the first half of Beyoncé’s “Partition” features great slides.
Thanks guys! I'll have to listen to Paramore. I was aware of the name but never listened to their songs. I will now! KAINALU is a band who I've discovered recently and I absolutely love them!! The bass is sick and so prominent in all their songs. I'm pretty sure the bass player plays with a pick mostly which I am yet to tackle. Check out the albums "Lotus gate" and "Ginseng hourglass". Keep up the great work SBL. Cheers
Sharon, PLEASE give more specifics on your sound on Ignorance; I know you said it's just a little drive but there's definitely more going on in your sound, between using a pick, which pickups you're using, type of strings, etc. That sound, especially when you were playing slowly, was SIIIICK.
That tone and lick from 'Fast In My Car' reminds me of 'Kate' by Ben Folds Five that floored me when I heard it. Love your content and how you present it! Bass on!!!
I love that you finally covered Paramore! I’d love to see a video like this for Tori Amos, loved JMJs playing on Choirgirl Hotel & George Porter jrs playing on Under the Pink!
I just love Ian's bass face and moves. It's just like he stepped right out of Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem band 😅 Never stop doing that, it's the best
The reason why i decided to buy a bass in dec 2023 after thinking about it for 3 yrs prior was because i wanted to learn "last hope" by paramore, among other songs because i loved their basslines. I'm glad you made a video about their basslines! edit: the Bassline for still into you is the one i play basically every day to warm up my fingers, as it is a very fun and simple sounding bassline. it is one of my favourites
Thank you guys so much for this video been a huge fan of Paramore for a while! Verse 2 of Careful has what I think is one of Jeremy’s coolest bass riffs ever but other than that this list was awesome!!!
I discovered Paramore last year (I know, haha) and was directly drawn to their music, especially the last album which is my favourite. One of the reasons (I have many) are the bass lines. The other ones are just so many that it would be too long to describe. Such an amazing, creative, different band and you can see how they are just maturing and going somewhere where nobody has been before (maybe that’s too much but I am happy to accept i went too big ;) Love them. Btw, great video you both, love your energy and passion for bass!
Yo was Sharon playing a Squier P on Hard Times and This is Why? So nice to see an accessibly priced bass on this channel when I've been spent years lusting after Scott and Ian's custom, luthier, and vintage collections, haha.
All we know is falling is so good. Also, there was anouther bass player for that album too named John hembree he filled in for Jeremy Davis during his departure for that album
I would love to see a video like this for New Model Army. Four different bassists with there own unique style beginning with Stewart Morrow playing lead bass, followed by Moose Harris, Nelson and current Ceri Monger.
So after this brilliant performance from Paramore Stuff I really recommend all Songs from 2013 Arctic Monkeys AM Album.Especially Arabella and Knee Socks🍾
ngl paramore is the reason why i switched the guitar for the bass. their basslines are so underrated man
So true. That Last Hope bassline is fucking lush
Joey Howard (current live bassist) is an absolute monster too. His work on Hayley’s solo stuff is INCREDIBLE!
And for Ian, he’s a fellow Antigua lover as well.
🔥🔥🔥
Isn’t Paramore basically just Hayley’s solo stuff nowadays
@@blake3001 listen to her actual solo albums and see the difference
@@devinebass you guys should make an episode on Petals For Armor, IMO
@@blake3001 awww why so bitter? U still saying sh!t like that on 2024? 😅
I CAN’T BELIEVE you touched on Ain’t It Fun and you didn’t mention the SLAPPED OUTRO!!!
Yeah that slap outro is probably the most iconic bass moment in the band’s entire discography
what. WHAT!
Yeah same here man, I immidiately ran to the comments lol.
paramore is just a whole complete band, everything is well thought of, arranged, and produced. i can't believe there use to be so many people thought it was a solo project for hayley.

Hayley's vocals are amazing, the guitar lines are so unique, now I can see the bass is so great... no wonder they are so complete

I've been waiting for this video this entire life. I love Paramore, and I always admired their bass playing.

One of my favorites. It fits perfectly with the build up for the ending. Just brilliant!

Yeah, he's awesome
Un-Reborn Again, Evil As Landed, Fairweather Friends... all great lines..
Seconded
Absolute genius! The TWO note bass line in Time and Place shows that reall well. All you need is a good rhythm.
Nick Oliveri’s bass line on “Better Living through Chemistry “ off of Rated R by QOTSA is a real groove
I was fortunate enough to be in the room for some of the After Laughter sessions, and the Caught In The Middle bassline is one that sticks in my head to this day! The energy in the room while JMJ was playing that one was infectious!

Jeremy's playing on Proof is great. A lot of great small fills throughout, but the two he plays during the break always make me smile.
I loved the video! One of my fave bass parts from Paramore that wasn't covered is from the song "Fake Happy" off of After Laughter. The bass during the verses is absolutely GROOVIN and the slides are so sweet.
World needs more of this energy. Thanks, SBL team!
Cheers!!
paramore drum and bass section is insane, as a bassist that is not into their music because of their style but of their quality
I've been a massive Paramore fan for years now, but I gotta admit I haven't really stopped to appreciate the amazing bass part they have. Thanks for that!
No problem, glad you enjoyed this one!!
Issues and Sky Acord always have my heart for basslines.

The work and care you guys put in this channel is so nice, just downloaded the tabs, and it's all so well made, the videos etc. Thanks and congrats!
Never expected to get this on the channel! Super happy about it! So many fun bass lines!

The only exception to this video IS The only exception. I completely agree with Sharon, it such a great song and the bass line adds its magic
