    I found this video to be quite frightening, actually: a discussion of all the technology used to catch human beings with no thought or mention of the plight of the human beings themselves. Gave me chills. I'm a scientist so not a stranger to the idea of abstracting a problem and modeling, and of course the technology is interesting, but I don't like to see us disregarding the humanity of our subjects or the complexity of our social issues.

    Somewhere there you spoke of the probability of a certain check finding a person that is on a lorry being part of the simulation. How do you determine how likely it is that the person will be found by this check?
    I guess testing different orderings of the various tests might give you a clue, but even then it's only a relative efficiency. Or do you test it by sending a thousand lorries that you know have people hidden but the local people don't through the check you're testing? If so, do the people manning the checks know/realize they're being tested?

If the passive MM scan takes 1 minute, then it is at most an increase of 0.002% of the yearly background radiation, roughly equivalent to eating one 144th of a banana. ***** To make proper selective searches, profiling is necessary, but simply profiling by skin color is not an effective method. You have to consider the appearance of past individuals who have used weapons in crowded places in the United States such as airports. While I don't have a list of all accounts of people bringing firearms or explosives into an airport, from what I would guess, I'd say one of the bigger factors would probably be age. From memory, In most mass murders, they tend to be young and single. It's ineffective and inhumane to take the cane from a crippled old man or woman and have them raise their arms while standing in a plastic tube. Also, I'd figure clothing and luggage makes a big difference. There's probably a correlation between the type, appearance, or amount of luggage or the clothing that anyone who intends to shoot or blow up the place might have. Certainly, there are more indicators than that.
      Also, I do recognize that you were joking. I just wanted to say that stuff.

      In all honesty I don't know but I'd like to think these problems have been considered. Weigh everything as they move. When the weight changes, auto-alert the driver. If the weight has increased without the driver picking up nor refuelling, the driver will know something is wrong and can then contact the authorities.

    • @grn1
      @grn1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think some Semi's may already have a feature like that, it's useful to detecting it something has gone missing as well. The problem of course is that even if they started mandating this systems use it's only going to be available on newer trucks. Putting in weighing stations everywhere would also be prohibitively expensive (they'd have to be installed absolutely everywhere in a fairly large area around the ports not just in them).

  • @vincenttpb
    @vincenttpb 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you know if they weigh the cars and trucks?

    • @IhsanMujdeci
      @IhsanMujdeci 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would only work if there was a scale at the beginning and the end and somebody snuck in between those 2 points. Otherwise a person could stay in from a place before the checks and remain there till after the checks and nothing would be d different.

    • @vincenttpb
      @vincenttpb 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then you would be able to accurately measure someones bodyweight of course. Maybe the weight of the cargo + driver and truck itself can be registered. If >3 persons are hiding in the back of a truck this might give a significant weight difference compared to the theoretical value for the weight of the truck+driver+cargo.

    • @IhsanMujdeci
      @IhsanMujdeci 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to have data of the person the truck the load the petrol, and potential mud that is caught in the undercarriage. Any modifications made to the truck.

    • @EEN-01E
      @EEN-01E 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vincent T I believe they only weigh trucks (if they do - I'm not sure - it's a long time since I went through the check with a bus and a truck with my dad) - they take papers about the load - I suppose they check if the weight is the same.

    I'm quite surprised they made a video on this, frankly. Sure, nice CS and all, but at least where I live the subject of Calais border control is considered controversial (or so I'd say, at least). There have already been many deaths surrounding this issue and although I won't say we're (fully) responsible for those, I'd argue it does make the issue more complex than finding an efficient sorting algorithm, something with a formally defined and superficial solution. If you simply want to make a video about these "known unknowns" which happened to be with this context, a short content disclaimer in the introduction would have been in place IMO. Well, my thoughts at least.

    • @joel9240
      @joel9240 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Wout12345 I completely understand where you're coming from, but keep in mind this video really doesn't touch on the political side a whole lot - it doesn't try to reach one political conclusion or another, it's just giving an interesting example of how computer simulations and data mining can be used in a practical real world example.

    • @Wout12345
      @Wout12345 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Joel Nichols Yeah, you're totally right, but I think they would have achieved that goal better by addressing it shortly. "Hey, we know this isn't a complete open-and-shut case, but if we want to catch as many of them as possible, this is how we can optimize it." I don't know, something along those lines would probably do it, maybe something a bit more articulate. I'm not asking them to share their political opinions either, I just think such a disclaimer would improve the video for some people, who won't be distracted by the elephant in the room.

    Couldn't you just search lorries at random and compare that data to lorries picked doing the different techniques and get the correct sense of success rates from that? You'd know which techniques are better than random and by how much. And you can also test combinations of techniques. Regardless, the unknown of how many people are hiding can be estimated from random searches. It isn't an unknown then.

    • @gnomee9447
      @gnomee9447 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      William Brall The number of people hiding isn't constant. whenever you determine it, it will change the other day. Their behaviour could also change, as soon as they know, that they are being looked for with a certain technique.

      Kohlenwasserstoff Wesen That and the "random" search is never going to be random, it might well give terribly skewed data.

    • @Huntracony
      @Huntracony 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      CowLunch you could literally make someone do a dice roll for every truck, it just means that even if you have strong suspicions that people are hiding in a lorry somewhere, you won't be allowed to search them unless the dice tell you to. so that won't ever happen.

    • @stephenrowley4171
      @stephenrowley4171 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Huntracony You could still search that lorry i fyou think someone in it. You just don't include that truck and any stowaways in your data analysis.

    • @gnomee9447
      @gnomee9447 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Huntracony Even if it is random it probably won't tell you that much. With slowly, but constantly changing probabilities I reckon you need a lot of data before you can tell, whether a change you measure is in the standard deviation or not. Probably you would also randomly switch the methods, to determine whether one is more reliable than the other.
      Although it isn't perfectly ethical, I think the mathematical modelling would be a great job. I hope that when I finish my studies my job will be somehow similar.

    You could just use some form of a directed energy weapon(non-lethal) into the containers(minus things like maybe frying electronics etc but those are just details :P ) and if you hear screaming, yay! you found em, happy ending?
    it would be efficient i'm sure.. and it's better having em stay alive then potentially dying on the trip?? :(

      Or protecting the people from unvaccinated immigrants. I think each lorry should have a gas emitted (which causes severe distress or death) or the punishment of being found is death. Simply deporting them does nothing.

      James Coyle Just because it's being used in a university doesn't mean it's educational use. Most educational use agreements I've seen would not allow for government contract jobs.

      ***** This is software demonstrating how the solved the problem. I don't think the shiny graphic (obviously used for teaching) was used to determine how best to catch illegal immigrants. That would have been a pure number output, probably.
