UCS X-wing (75355) modification, using R2D2 polybag (30611)!

- I bought the new UCS X-wing on May 4th, and I didn’t like how R2D2 looked with the size of the ship. So if you want to make this modification yourself you just need the R2D2 polybag to do it yourself!
Also made a change to the stand so it could display downwards and look good on a higher shelf.

Mods like this should never have been necessary. The minifig in the slot was clearly too small and as a UCS set, it's all about the display. They could have designed the build with the R2-D2 dome and still have included the minifig in the set, displayed on the stand.
Compared to reference pictures of the Xwing, 2 studs is actually accurate. At least, it is a lot more accurate than 4 studs. Even a 3 studs wide dome would be a bit too much.

I found that putting an extra plate in the astromech hole raises R2 a little higher which is an even easier mod than this, and it makes it look perfect. You did a great job, but I like my way better because it is in the correct scale for the mini figures. Great ideas!
The poly bag r2d2 head is so much better oml
Completely agree about the sides of the ship being flimsy. They kept on falling apart when I was trying to attach them to the ship. I used some other Lego parts to make it a little sturdier to keep on.

Great job on the modification with the R2D2. I’ve been quite puzzled though, because the UCS ship is not mini fig scale. I never once considered putting the mini fig R2-D2 in the ship. I really don’t think that was ever the intention. I mounted my ship exactly the same way, but I didn’t modify the stand. It worked fine without anything but I think I might change it like you did anyway. And I don’t think I had any problems with the ship falling apart so I’m not really sure if I just got lucky but I never got the impression the ship was flimsy at all so that’s kind of odd. I did watch the end with your dog. Very cute.
The larger Artoo looks much more in scale. It's a shame they couldn't have built the set to be a more stable construction though. I also think it's kind of a shame that they don't revive the old Technic Figures for larger sets like these. They look about the right scale to have as an X-Wing Pilot.
The mod looks good, I was a bit surprised that the R2 head isn't printed so that it can face forward normally. Maybe if you lowered things slightly you could get the head on a round 4x4 plate set on a 2x2 jumper plate to make it fully rotatable. I can't afford these larger sets, so it was cool seeing someone make this change just to see how it looks.
That’s a really great idea! Then R2 could face the correct way. I might just have to adjust that!
Hi! First of all I want to tell you that you did a great job with the modification. The original R2 looked really small (compared to the Xwing). So taking the R2 from the polygab was a great idea (btw, don't you think polybags are awesome?).
Oh I know that feeling of having a Lego set and knowing that it's going to fall apart in any moment (but even my mocs are like that😅).
The Xwing pointing down makes it look really cool. Also the Tie Fighter looks so cool (I normally look these sets at store, but watching them fully built are incredible).

The R2-D2 dome needs to be between the MiniFigure and the bigger version you just used.
It does look better with the bigger dome.

I like your update better but I feel like we need something in between. Something like a 3x3 dome would be best. Hopefully they fix this and the sturdiness five years from now when they realize the next UCS X-Wing
The X-wing will turn into Luke’s landspeeder. We will have to many lol but when they do make it. I hope it’s sturdier and that the 3x3 R2D2 will exist. 🤞
had the same problem building it grabbing it on the sides and have them come off all the time,also not really impressed with all the gaps it has as well .
Yeah, the UCS x wing is about as strong as a wet paper towel! I’ve built several of the brickVault minifigure scale ships including the B wing and I thought they were kinda flimsy till I built this x wing! Definitely not hanging on to this one! 🤔🤷

Kinda suck that even now LEGO still can't get the angle of the cockpit right.
Another, cheaper idea for modification is just remove R2D2 from starship:)
I agree, this build is very fragile and I’m not happy about it. I have the Y-Wing and that thing is sturdy as hell!
Nice try, but it looks way worse IMO. I checked reference pictures and the R2D2 dome should be half the width of the top of the canopy.
lego's canopy is 4 studs wide, therefore R2 should be 2.
Should you enjoy it? OFC, if it suits your taste. Is it more accurate? definitely not.
I think the 4x4 dome looks better than the 2x2. that said, I think a 3x3 dome would be better than both. Sadly, LEGO's 3x3 dome looks really weird.
The original r2d2 head definitely looks too small to me, I feel like a 3 stud wide r2d2 dome would be the perfect size but idk if they ever made such a thing.
I don’t think Lego has made that either. Would have been perfect to have it for this set!

@@brookethebuilder Me too! Mr. Jang answered one year ago to my suggestion: " too big. had to be be 3 by 3"... Nobody is perfect but it looks nearly perfect and way,way better. It's not minifig scale, why the minifig R2-D2? And you are right. Don't touch it!

This R2D2 is far too big and off scale. You need the R2 ledlight keychain (just remove the chain). It looks much better ;)
Your right that is a good size might have to check that out! I wish the designers would of made a custom to scale R2D2 for this set!
This mod looks so good that you may have just increased the value of the poly bag of R2D2 , i know i am buying one to do this mod and i will have to pay for it ..

@@brookethebuilder I went looking on bricklink and there are a few world wide at about 25 plus dollars but i expect that to change considering the popularity of this set and how good this mod looks , thanks for showing this

Why did this come out ? its has just appeared ? . Everybody knows version 2 is the best of the three , coming around 350-450$ now and they made version 2 very sturdy because the first now a collectors item and very expensive UCS X Wing was very basic and was considered to be a bit fragile as well, especially the operation of X foyle the wings that are known to sag as it's under engineered . They fixed this in version 2 and made it much better . This version 3 has lot of question marks and lots of U Tubers scratching heads with this version ? The engine intakes is a bit toy like over sized not typical UCS , R2 is way under scale ,this is unbelievable as R2 should be very accurate and detailed as it's a very important part of the operation of the X Wing Red Five . The whole model seems really fragile flimsy as you pointed out . I saw it yesterday in real life at Lego shop and I did a double take as I couldn't really tell if it was a UCS . I have version 2 but I think ill pass on this it dos'nt look like a higher quality desirable USC set standard, like the Tie fighter , M Falcon , Y wing , Slave 1 , or shuttle the rare amazing Shuttle Tydirium imperial Lambada class kit 10212 from ROTJ , that sells now for up the 4000$ , You can see the design brief was to make this version 3 look like more Lego and not a model kit . But the kits I mention above are on another level of UCS as they defiantly have fewer studs exposed and more smooth surfaces .
