When I bought this set I thought it was way off too.. but then I reviewed the scene. Search up an image of R2 during the trench run. He sits quite high. The standard R2 minifig with the mod in this video is actually damn near perfect-as perfect as we could hope for IMHO.

I actually think that instead of using fancy wings, i think a cheaper and better way is to flip the gun stick around, and then stick the dish in, so there’s the barrier stopping you from going any deeper, and you can get it perfectly on all wings. After you’ve done that, use a black technic peide and put in in front of the dish.

looks good, I took 3 1x1 tiles for the engines and put a snip rocket through each one. flipped the gray cannon rods, turned the bowls forward again, and used lightsaber hilts for tips. 
Hello very nicely done i must say, ive actually done quite similar before watching this lol. I put the lightsaber handles on end my blasters though which i think look bit better. If you remove the two curved tiles in front R2 you can place same style thats slightly higher so he looks alot better seated behind Luke. And redid front nose with the older design aesthetic from 2018 witch adds slot to the design. Add to this by placing curved tile at diagonal in front the cockpit and tiles running down to nose. I also added the underbelly cargo area by simply added run of reverse slopes. I had all these pieces so didn't cost me any extra but in the end it was a mix of both 2018 and newer mod but best both.
For my x-wing I removed one of the 1x3 tan Jumper plates and put a 1x2 Jumper there so I could fit a Modified 1 x 2 with Clip and a Bucket Handle for a better "steering wheel" with the original screen just above. As for landing gear I simply changed the current hinge piece to a 1x3 hinge with male and female end and put the previous hinge where the yellow axis was. Love your engine mod, gonna have to do it myself.
Awesome video! This video got the creative juices flowing and I made some changes to my X-Wing based on the inspiration provided here in. As for the landing gear, I simply removed it. It was much easier than pulling it apart, and since I have it on a stand it seemed implied that the gear would be up and stowed. I removed the two pieces that R2 is resting on, that did the trick and looks much better. I added the pieces to the back of the cock-pit, which is a nice touch. I did something similar to the video as I didn't have all the piece necessary for the mod mentioned in the video, but I'm happy with the results. I also added some small connecting pieces (the names of which I can't recall, sorry.) to the ends of the gun barrels to make them a little longer and more realistic. It also improves their appearance. I never would have given any modifications the slightest consideration without the help of this video, so thank you very much. May the Mods be with you!
Got me two of these new X-Wing for my next diorama... made some mods myself, but I most positively will imply some of yours also!! (as one of the X-fighters is to be displayed taking off with the S-foils already in position about 20 feet off the ground for immediate interception of incoming TIE-Fighters, so some half way retracted landing gear on this one will make an awesome addition showing the urgency of the emergency take-off with the S-foils spread and the landing-gear still half way out)
Did the engine intake mods (first option) and pulled the jumpers for R2 and added a 2x6 white finish plate in front of the canopy. One 1x2 gray cheese slope behind the console, looks 5x better. Will have to order some more parts to do the rest 😅

I just recently used some of these techniques for my X-Wing, added a few things that I would add to your video (such as raising the cockpit canopy so Luke can sit upright), and I think my X-Wing looks pretty dadgum good! *Three months later edit: be on the lookout for my review of the X-Wing this September!
Id encourage adding pink translucent bricks like the ones he took out from the guns and use them as the engine flames. Add a pink translucent antena at the tip of each flame to make it look like its zooming with the flame railing behind the engines. Awesome 🤤
I ended up modifying my old style one to be better looking. Just little things like making the wings thicker,fixing the nose up,and overall just making it look a little better
there is actually a better option to fix the landing gear: i removed the blue 1x5 plate and put a 1x2 plate with clip in there. then i used a1x4 plate with two connectors to the clip to connect all. at least i used a1x3 plate instead of a 1x8 plate
I feel like you can add a cone or cilinder near the jumper on the moded guns. It will make them a bit too THICC,but it will add friction,so it will turn less and make them fall off less.
Great video. I did the front engine mods, the cockpit, and the landing gear (though due to parts slightly different). I can't do the side or top of the engine due to not having the pieces, but maybe someday. I am very happy with the ones I did, thank you.
they should actually go back to making the windscreen a transparent black to be more accurate, not sure why they changed it to be clear with the new windscreen piece
The other thing is that on the part that is mostly technic on one side it has 2 gaps. I made a quick TH-cam short for anyone who wants to fix that part too
The way R2 D2 sits pretty accurate. (mod versions) Look back to a new hope and look at the scene where the x wings are not yet in attack positions and approaching the death star.
2:10 or you can use the sticker from the 2012 set with 2x2 round tiles, looks much better than your option B and your option A is 100% legal if it was used in an official set xD
@@TommyCBricks for those of us who have the 1978 Castle 375 or 6078, this is how Lego AG made the ears for the horses. Totally legit. I also have the 585 LEGOLAND Police Headquarters which uses this technique to create the motorcycles' handlebars.
What makes an illegal building technique is when you build something that could over time damage the plastic. Placing studded tiles between studs is illegal because of the pressure it puts on the LEGO studs. however doing so with flat tiles isn’t as the the flat tiles are a hair thinner.
I have been able to move R2-D2 forward by a stud that also lowered it down. I was able to do this mostly with the pieces supplied with still the structure holding strong.
I find it funny that you say it's illegal to do things like shove tile pieces in between two stud crevices, I don't really think there's a wrong way to build a lego set if it works
Illegal in this context means that it puts stress on the pieces that can cause them to break over time. Plates between studs is illegal, but plates between studs is not, AFAIK.
I'm coming up with a way to modify the back section using sloped and corner slopes. That should help reduce the chunky appearance. My approach to the engine intakes was to mount the light bluish gray tiles on a dark bluish gray studded disc plate with technic hole. This allowed you to align the 1x2 tiles better and move the tiles forward a little. I copied your approach for the computer console and a slightly different seat detail. I used the black slope but behind that I put a 1x1 black slope on a jumper. Seemed neater. As for the nose, put a 1x2 plate in front of the cockpit, a slope (either two of the same ones that hold on the cannons or two stud wide version), followed by a 2x3 V plate, then a 2x4 tile that overlaps by 2 studs on the stickered tile. The nose tip itself can be modified like the 2018 version with some 1x2 bricks with technic cross holes and a 3L technic bar. Replace the white cross plate underneath with a 2x3 plate. My cannons are a little different as well. I kept the white cylinder where it was but moved the other pieces forward. ::()00()00>>>>------(--- I kept the dish but also borrowed your idea for the technic pins. I also reversed the bar so that the dish is against the wider part and the pin goes into the last bit. I also plan on adding in open hole studs behind the dish to make that cone shape. I also plan on making the s-foil markings out of smaller tiles instead of the large plates, then use white tiles to cover up the remaining studs. Hope this helps your own X-Wing, happy building!

I removed the two jumpers below R2 during construction when I saw how high he stood. It's just weird they added them. I bought a few more and used a razor to cut the sticker sheet to make R-3 and R-2. R-3 for Briggs looks ok. R-2 the stripes should be wider.
Before watching the video: I have the old (2012 i think) version of the set. I have modified it a lot. I've changed the cannons, turned the droid pit, made bigger intakes for the engines, added the targeting computer...

Already looking at getting a second and modding it up to look like Gen Antoc Merric's Blue Leader X-Wing from Rogue One! Technically you could mod this set to be any of the legendary T65B X-Wings from the SW Universe. Might do Wedge Antillies Red Two as well.

You could add two 1x2 vented cheese wedge pieces back to back on either side of the rear fuselage to give it that hexagon profile instead of a square

i just removed the two plates that go under his feet, lowered him by one plate and that was much more accurate

the tiles between the studs is not illegal because the tiles are slightly thinner than plates so they fit nicely without causing stress
