When I arrived in West Germany in 1976, 17-1/2 years old. There was a poster hanging in the barracks. Can't remember exactly, but it said something like we were outnumbered 13-1 in men, 6-1 in tanks, and 4-1 in artillery. When I asked my one Sgt if we could stop them, he said we were a speed bump, and our job was to keep them from reaching the English channel in 3 days so troops from the states could get here. I always thought, sitting in the Fulda Gap for 3 years, it was not going to end well for me. We didn't have a lot of our heavy ammo, like TOW's, Dragons, and such. They said if we needed it, they would get it to us. I always figured my post was gone before we got the vehicles off it.
Ouch. My dad also went to West Germany with the British Army as support. I am surprised you didn't seem to have enough heavy gear to make a good go of it.

Until near the end of GW1 the only RAF plane that could designate for LGB's was the Bucanneer. Unless you had ground designation from troops. Also no Bombcats in 1989.
"Until near the end of GW1 the only RAF plane that could designate for LGB's was the Bucanneer." Yes, only when "Tracy" and "Sandra" joined the Tornado force they were able to designate on their own (and at night, other than the Buccs). Btw, the TIALD is modelled quite nicely in DI Tornado. Early in campaign you could not use it due to enemy AAA and SAMs, but once the campaign had progressed medium to high level attacks were possible (provide the weather was good enough).
Just to point out that in 1989 F-16s didn't have color displays (MFD). Those first came with the European MLU upgrades in the mid-late 90s, which was then adapted by USAF block 50/52s. I recall talking to a USAF pilot who envied the Europeans having color MFDs.

French cold war nuclear policy was to use their entire nuclear stockpile the moment any enemy force stepped a foot into mainland France so if it got to this point and France actually followed through on their threat it would turn into an all out nuclear war. T bone steak tonight Capt!
I was surprised to see the Tomcats shooting Phoenix missiles in a dogfight. At that range and against enemy fighters wouldn't they rely on AMRAAM or Sidewinders?
This is pre-AMRAAM times. Probably pre Sidewinder too.
@@Konszky the sidewinder was first introduced in 1959. Prior to the amraam US aircraft used the Sparrow radar-guided missile for intermediate ranged targets. The phoenix was specifically designed to kill bombers, it used a ballistic missile-like climb and unpowered dive to hit large unmaneuverable aircraft. It wouldn't have likely been used in the way it is represented in this video.
